I am a lover of navy pants as separates so I agree with you wholeheartedly about the power of the light blue sport coat. Navy is still a staple but as a jacket light blue is massively underrated. You more than made your case sir!
Yes, I am surprised by those who say you can't wear a navy pair of pants with tailoring. Anything that isn't worsted wool is safe, like fresco, cotton, etc.

I still don't understand why tailored navy trousers in fabrics like flannel, cotton or fresco are so heavily discouraged in the classic menswear community, as they're very versatile and they look nothing like orphaned suit trousers at all.
