yeah definitely, I think the limitations are definitely good in that way, but I think they're bad in that sometimes you can't do what some of the newer machines are doing or as easy, and so in that way it can be limiting.

The wings of the butterfly become strong by breaking out. If you help it then the wings aren't strong and the butterfly can't fly. I have used Maschine in the past and I put it down for the XL and my Roger Linn which may be slower but sound a lot better
Great video content. Well done too. For me the XL is still very viable today as it was back in the day. You can make great music with any of the new MPCs and samplers if you run them through a good analogue mixer or outboard gear but these old ones just have a sound that works for me and many hit makers in Reggae, Hip Hop, DnB, House from back in the days to this day and will continue to.
If your slider works, you can also use it for tuning. Another trick is use 16 levels and set the pad(s) to tuning. Lastly, I disagree with sequencing being better on a DAW than the mpc. Especially with the ability to utilize track mutes. It feels more intuitive in any MPC. Then again, they’re not for everyone anyway.
Don't forget to save constantly when using a 2000XL. If you use it for an extended time, hours on end it will freeze and you will not be able to save. Turning the power off & on again will function normally but everything not saved will be lost. And always make backups if you're using disks.
Got my 2000xl coming in the mail tomorrow. I’ve used them in the past never owned one though. Will be used as an addition to my current workflow. (Note if you use other samplers instruments etc in your workflow, get an outboard mixer (cheap or expensive) great way to combine signals and mix signals from your other devices before tracking into your daw!)
Doubling pads is not a bug. All MPC2000xl do that. You just have to learn how to hit the pads. Straight from the top and in the middle of the pad. It‘s like an instrument you have to learn how to play ;)

@@88XLmusic I don't know if it was intendet or not, but it's a known thing. You'll find a lot online if you google for "MPC double triggering". Try to get your finger off the pad faster. It took me some time to learn it too but now it doesn't double trigger anymore. You somehow learn it with time and practice.
Absolutely true! People nowadays don't really learn and practise their instruments and rather skip to the next fashionable gadget. Another thing that works well for me is having all the manuals for my gear ready on-the-go. As PDFs on my phone, and I regularly find interesting new features.

So 32MB RAM is way more than I really need at a time. I have the blue MCD-version, which came with the #flashcardreader installed from the factory, so loading a new program is done swiftly. Bought it new back in the day. The immediacy of use and that "90ies-Akai-Forward-Punch" in the mids is great. Also, the unit has great features which actually work. Unlike new devices, where the user is always the beta-tester. I recently bought the #AkaiEB16 internal effects board, which is much more interesting than I anticipated 😀 Yes, kinda 80ies/90ies budget quality, not highend Lexicon/Eventide quality. But having it thoroughly integrated into the MPC-ecosystem makes it more a sound design toolkit. I highly recommend that PCB.

Interesting about the effects board. I am torn on whether i should invest that amount in it, but I was thinking of saving up for a secondary 2000XL that I use to tinker on.
It’s worth it to keep it. I look at it this way. If you have a good working 2k, a newer mpc isn’t necessary. If you’re buying your first mpc, get a newer one. If you had a mpc in the past, and would like another one…. Get a new one.
Yeah you’re right, vintage gear isn’t for everyone. Especially if you’re just starting out. I might pick up a 2k xl one day. But I too grew up in the same era. Heatmakerz definitely boosted the sales of this unit lol
that's true. one thing I like about pitching sample by sample though is not being stuck to a specific pitch. Like being able to make your own "key" if that makes sense
@@88XLmusic yeah for sure, i was just referring to the part of the video about how long it would take to check out the beat you have been building in a different pitch. so the quick way of auditioning would be resampling ;) I used to make a few copies of melodic samples onto different pads with different pitch for quick access when doing live beats with the mpc1000, but no mpc's here anylonger. just the digitakt and the octatrack :)
It would be stupid to not take advantage of all the improvements in computer and sequencer front. Myself I love creating beats on the original interface and then transferring them to Ableton for mixing and mastering.
I wouldn't say its stupid, but i do agree that it can be beneficial. Have to remember that there are plenty of songs that became hits that were made only with this machine.

Historically though most of those classic boom bap records were typically mixed in big studios with analog neve or ssl consoles with great eq and ssl 4000-series even had a built in compressor in every channel + all the outboard gear: urei, tubetech etc. and of course great mixing engineers and producers like Rick Rubin. We probably don't have the luxury of all that but that's where the daw and plugins come into play. Even though I'm an old school guy and have a bunch of outboard I have no hesitation of using a DAW and all the plugins - whatever makes things sound better.
If you have to load a beat into a secondary program Its not worth using the whole idea of a stand alone is to not have to use anything else in the pursuit of making your production... full stop.
@@88XLmusic I must say the hicut filter is amazing on 2k, I had isla 2400 before and it was nice, but somehow sold it, something didnt click with me. Old is gold for a reason.
I would not recommend buying one for $800 in 2024. It's a great machine & I wish I still had mine, but that's too expensive. I bought one around 25 years ago brand new & it only cost a few hundred more than that. I suppose it's worth it if you really love working with old mpcs & they do sound incredible. For most people it just wouldn't be practical.

The sound quality of the vintage MPCs is worth buying one. The Roger Lynn MPCs sound the best.
I heard about that model too, on the 3000's i hear its amazing.
If you go out and buy an older MPC just to make low-fi/90s hip-hop then you don't know how to shape your sound on FL Studio.
I love these types of videos. They keep the value of my mpc’s high. This gear will ALWAYS be worth it, no matter the year.

The most slept on thing on the mpc2000xl is the Digital in/outs.. I sample in digital and my drums in analog..The drum cut right through the sample

You have to have the 8 out board to get the digital io. I do have one, but most 2000xls did not come with that

The ears and brain do the sampling before it even gets to the MPC. 👍🏼

I don’t sample I just midi my fantom and my motif and go crazy but I do sample my kicks and snares into it cuz the Mpc 2000xl hit different
I use it with no pressure. I often like the ferl of using it every often, but is really limited for how big and delicate it is.
Sometimes I do some sampling quickly making an idea and recording it to have samples to use with ableton later.
I think it's really to make a 100% beat on it, but for some bits it is cool to use, as an instrument

you could just resample a loop and pitch the sample down up whatever, get a feel for what u want pitchwise
