There are a few maps from freedoom that were put in Hell on earth starter pack. It's funny how ppl will say they think freedoom has bad level design, yet they see the same maps in a wad like Hell on Earth and think it's great lol.
Haven't played through Freedoom in it's current state from start to finish yet. But will say you have to keep in mind that it's not a final/finished product and is still being worked on and maintained. Meaning assets and even levels could change as time goes on.
It's quite rare to see someone talking about FreeDoom giving it's long history of development cycle, I still remember when the game was in it's v0.8 build with an Entryway similar if not identical to the one in Doom II, aside from placeholder enemies, weapons and many more visual and audible assets.
Fun fact: If you're gonna play Freedoom in single-player, it might be worth it to not play the latest release, but play the development snapshot, official release is a bit outdated (it's from almost 5 years ago). For example, development snapshots contain new enemy sprites - for example, Freedoom is meant to have a different story than Doom (about an alien invasion instead of demonic one) so recently Lost Souls, Pain Elementals and Revenants were replaced with alien and mutant enemies.
That was a wild co-op session we had for Freedoom, it was really fun. By the way, my first experience playing Freedoom was with version 0.5 on the Edge source port with the GoldenEye mod, if I remember correctly. It's been a while, but it definitely brings back some good memories from my childhood. Anyway, I'm glad you made a video about it. Nice job, buddy!
Thanks for this trip to the past. I remember playing FreeDoom back in 2003-2004 when I only had the GBA versions of Doom 1 and 2, but wanted the PC version. This seemed like a good placeholder to keep me busy at the time. Despite the different music, levels, and graphics (and they weren't even all done yet), I recognized what was supposed to be what. It was so surreal, but I enjoyed it. I liked the rendition of Suburbs with the gloomier music and the city skyline across some water.
Your welcome! Glad to have made the video as this was part of my childhood too. Hope to make more content regarding FreeDoom in the future as more content is being contributed overtime.
It looks like when you had a weird dream about Doom: "man, and the imps were snakes and the pinky demons were pink toads and the Cyberdemon was a bit like the Spider Mastermind as well"
Finally someone who appreciates Freedoom like i do. It was all i had, i couldn't afford to get the Real DOOM until a few years pasted by, nowadays you can just get the real DOOM IWADs for free in many ways now😂
0:51 Dude, when Freedoom was created there was genuinely no legal way to obtain Doom. There was no Steam. Eventually it was possible to rip the wads from Doom 3 BFG edition, but for a long while that was the only option to play Doom mods aside from piracy (you couldn't rip the wads from the XBLA release). It was only in 2007 it was possible to buy Doom on Steam.
Definitely not true. I remember seeing Doom Collectors Edition was even for sale in my local supermarket around the time the project started. Id also for a long time had an online store where you could buy their games, but I forget when that shut down. All this said, "Doom for people who can't afford it" has never been the goal of the project. "Free" in the title refers to freedom and not price. It's all about providing the Doom community with an independent foundation of its own that isn't controlled by a corporation
Doom 1 and 2 are free at internet Archive. They've been going through litigation to keep certain versions public. You can find it in other places also.
Internet Archive has been in on going litigation to keep certain versions of Doom 1 and 2 free legally. By the time they're settled everyone who wanted Doom will have it anyway. 🤷🏻♂️
The game works very well, but some of the levels would need replacing for better alternatives. It happens way too often that you get a key, open that security door, only to find a button behind it that does "something", "somewhere", like opening a random tiny door on the other side of the huge, sprawling level. While some levels have a very good architecture and some even became foundation for Hell on Earth Starter Pack, others fail to communicate what is the player supposed to do. With that being said, I have huge respect for the FreeDoom community.
most mods work very well with freedoom, the ones that dont usually have issues with enemies having frames from regular doom or anything like that unless its a mod for heretic/hexen/strife, then yea i guess it doesnt work at all probably lol
@@THEBaratusII Yeah, you mean on the main page? I found some issues with some maps and wanted to report it in their Discord channel, but it turned out I was playing a very old version (ver. 0.12.1). They gave me a link of a new build (ver. 0.13.0) and a day later they also posted the new build on their main website. 😆

We now need a FreeDoom comic with FreeDoom novels

literally "we have doom at home"
It's actually really good. More like an alternate reality version than an inferior one.
@@bjorntantau194iiiiiii beg to differ

Literally never touched doom until my older years and freeDOOM is nothing compared to OG DOOM@nonenothingnull
... Also playable on mobile smartphones.

It's interesting that no one tried to make FreeQuake as well
iirc, there is a project named LibreQuake by MissLavender, you can check out. github.com/MissLavender-LQ/LibreQuake
There's OpenArena which is Quake 3 Arena fully free content replacement, but you probably knew it.
It looks like when you had a weird dream about Doom: "man, and the imps were snakes and the pinky demons were pink toads and the Cyberdemon was a bit like the Spider Mastermind as well"
Can't believe id made a game in one year that internet users couldn't even replicate in 30.
I played both phases with Brutal Mood. Aside from the enemy sprites, I really dig the level design, specially of Phase 2.

Wasn't Doom Collectors Edition (containing the classic Doom IWADs) around during that time in 2001?

This is now available on Xbox now it's called Boom Band, no joke 😂
Just looked it up. That's a weird name to use because it sounds like a Rock Band/Guitar Hero clone.

I really like freedoom, not just the fact that you can mod it, but there are so many levels that are better than original Doom levels in my opinion.
I haven't played through Freedoom's levels in it's entirety yet. I'll eventually get around to that one day.
I've seen this video 2 times and I love it both times

How to run this on IPhone?
I don't own an iPhone so I can't say.
