    My family was born in Africa for 2 generations and as the African countries were being granted independence and due to the instability of the new government my father planned to move to UK. In 1968 the laws were changing and we had to make a quick decision to emigrate to UK. My mom, brother and I went first as my dad had to give a 6 month notice to leave his government job. In those days there was no TV, phone, or other type of media except newspapers. We arrived in the middle of February in Uk with no earthly idea as to what to expect. We were picked by a stranger who was a relative of a friend. My dad talegramed him with our flight details.
    It was a most shocking experience ever. I grew up there and later at 25 emigrated to the USA. I sometimes wonder how we did it and it seems like a movie to me now.

    Although canadian healthcare has its challenges, i liked the fact that healthcare in canada is free. The kind of health crises this family went through, in other countries it would have been unimaginably expensive. I dont mind paying extra taxes if education and healthcare benefits are included. Another thing i learnt from this family is that we can start from scratch at any age and upskill/ study at any age. Thank you for this wonderful interview.

    People cribbing about working in a lower position, not working in the same field as they used to back home OR not earning as much as they used to back home, should learn something from Mr. Mukherjee. Even after working as an AVP in India, he didn't give up living through all the hardships in Canada and even sold Credit Cards for living, he is so down to earth and graceful. Salute to his attitude and Respect for whole Mujherjee Family! Canada is definitely not for people who don't want to come out of their comfort zone and for those who are accustomed to having domestic help in their native countrym they should not come to Canada. Wish there were more immigrants like Mujherjee family & their helpful friends in Canada.

      Nothing courageous in leaving your decent paying job and start working at an entry level position. It's called foolishness and I expect people in their 40s to be more mature and thoughtful before taking such impulsive decision that not only ruined their financial & mental stability but also put themselves & their family into never ending spiral of uncertainty. The amount of love people have for "Phoren" despite having a stable lifestyle in India is beyond my comprehension, if they show even 50% of that louuuve for their motherland, India would have progressed so much (not a patriotic rant but it's a total senseless decision for a salaried employee to literally throw his prime earning years and be jobless or doing an entry level job)

    • @SunnyKapoor84
      @SunnyKapoor84 10 месяцев назад +4

      Most people who leave India want to get rid of the mindset and negativity which prevails in the country, which will never change no matter how progressive and open minded rest of the world becomes. It forces people to take such decisions even at older ages and we all can very well see how happy this family is in Canada.

The zeal to move abroad, the hard work they did before going, life style changes etc. only thing is that since they were well placed in india, it was not necessary for them to go there. But after all, its their life. If anyone has good salary plus property in india, i think not required to move.out.of country.

    I feel for the family but if anyone ever wonders why Canada is not doing well financially then look no further than this....
    There is a simple logic: if you are extracting more value out of the country than you are putting in (in terms of taxes) then it is not sustainable in the long run. There is a reason why US healthcare is costly because healthcare "IS" fundamentally extremely expensive-
    1) the equipments are not something that is manufactured in millions in Chinese factories, they are made with high tolerances and are made in small unit. The building and other facilities also cost more money than other normal buildings like a mall or factory.
    2) the people who provide service are not your average joes, they are some of the most sharp minded and hard working people and hence their wages reflect that.
    Just imagine how much you have to pay for a good meal at a good restaurant and multiply it by around 20X, say a meal would cost $100 for two people then it should cost you at least $2000 for one days or few hours of medical services. Could be more or less depending on various factors.
    People would argue "well but we paid taxes for 10-20 years and we didn't use the healthcare system at that time so we should be able to use it more if needed now" well you also used all other facilities like roads, public transportation, police protection, defense forces for the nation, justice system, education system and many other things, all of which cost billions of dollars EACH year.
    So for medical services, if you were to ACTUALLY pay money out of your pocket then you'd simply go broke after a week or two of medical service at best. I understand medical factors are out of peoples hand but because the healthcare system is overburdened the government has to either shutdown public free system or increase taxes to balance the finances. There is no free lunch, Canada just can't keep doing what it is doing.

    I see a lot of criticism of the healthcare in Canada. Imagine if this family were in India, the private healthcare would have stripped them off all their savings. No insurance cover would be able to support hospitalization and dialysis costs in India. They are getting amazing care and have access to resources unheard of in India.
