To be honest, thank God for online Masters in Comp Sci that have concentrations in AI/ML (most notably Georgia Tech, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and University of Texas Austin). Whlst this will never equal getting a Ph.D., you will definitely have a strong ML background upon completing these programs.

bro this is very generic advice. i wanted to know what tools to use? whether to go towards computer vision, or due to emerging trend go towards large language models. which ml/ai vertical (cv, nlp, rl, etc) is being used by majority of the companies. being an ml engineer requires you to know about mlops stuff. so do we use the cloud based services that come with integrated solutions for building ml pipelines or do we lean onto learning opensource tools for each of the stages of mlops - mlflow for model/data tracking, kubeflow for deployment and orchestration, airflow for managing the ml project. what you discussed in the video is a generic advice to somebody who wants to do data stuff (data scientist, data engineer). ml engineer is a very specific role which requires to put ml knowledge into applications that are catered for users at scale. i am disappointed with this video. didn't help me much. thanks regardless.

it sorta seems like you're in denial about the requirements for some of these positions going forward. even though some people claim self-taught is ok, it likely isn't at this point. everything i've read says you'll likely need an advanced degree. it just sounds like you don't want to accept this reality.
You don't need a PhD for a ML engineer job, instead you need a lot of experience in data analysis, or software engineer. She's an IA Scientist, and in order to do research you do need a PhD, she's just lying in some questions bc she doesn't know about applied roles in industry
@@orangemoonglows2692 ive seen a lot of openings that do not ask for a PhD but okay. Also its very unrealistic to think that machine learning engineering is only PhD graduates. It’s an applied role and likely not all PhD students are also going to do specifically a data science degree. A lot of people can fit the criteria without a PhD if you isolate the skills needed. That’s basically the entire field of software engineering nowadays.
@@climbersisyphus i actually wasn't thinking in terms of needing a phd in general. however, i do think that ai is in the building phase. as with the early internet/phone builds/tech, etc. these things were created by people who were highly educated, not self-taught. i also think that nobody really knows the types of jobs you can do in ai because isn't truly developed, just like nobody knew what would follow with the internet/www. finally, 73% of software engineers have a bachelors degree.
I don't think it makes her a "top 1% AI engineer" which is a bullshit definition, but she is clearly a pretty good researcher, according to the number of papers she has and the impact of the work. I would say to 10% PhD kinda recent grad (5 years after+-). Overall, pretty impressive work :) But in all honesty, it is not simple to call someone a top 1% something in competitive fields. Only the top 0.001% in ML are clearly top 1%.
I think the biggest problem I see is people conflating ML engineer and AI engineer. The former has a background in machine learning and the latter has a background in anything and is just using LLM APIs.
one misleading thing about this video is : most people doing ML are not not into research but doing office jobs. Data manipulation techniques like SQL are more important that going too deep into ML algos. A recruiter will rather hire a backend engineer with good data manipulation skills than a ML algo expert.
@@tunde6747 I listened to samples of the audio track in the above video again to ensure it wasn't an issue with playback on my end. It isn't. The audio track is filled with reverberations from beginning to end. This is due to the room in which the audio was recorded being unsuitable for use as a studio. There is nothing on the bare walls to prevent sounds from echoing, which is what I hear. I owned a music studio from 2007 to 2012 so I have a bit of experience in this area. Fun times, but a great way to lose a lot of money.
i feel sorry for the next gen. It was already a large barrier to get into tech for young milennials. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are going to have to dig in very deep to even get an entry level job
Don't forget that time is not stagnant, those that are there now will shift due to age or so.. They won't be there forever, which will create rooms for people coming

@shreyanksingh7122 the data science market is dominated by Chinese. Because Chinese hire Chinese and white Americans think their country is competing with China in AI. So brown people get pushed into IT. If you are indian you will have a hard time finding data science jobs in America.
regarding tools, dumbing down of society: driven people, people who appreciate making things and how things are made, will be smarter and more enlightened. However many people are not interested in such so they just waste their time on indulgences. That is why there's the saying 'smart phones make dumb people.' It's easy to think that in our engineer world bubble others are like us, but the average literacy rate has dropped dramatically since smart phones. Hence the premise of the movie Idiocracy

@@climbersisyphus i actually wasn't thinking in terms of needing a phd in general. however, i do think that ai is in the building phase. as with the early internet/phone builds/tech, etc. these things were created by people who were highly educated, not self-taught. i also think that nobody really knows the types of jobs you can do in ai because isn't truly developed, just like nobody knew what would follow with the internet/www. finally, 73% of software engineers have a bachelors degree.

I don't think it makes her a "top 1% AI engineer" which is a bullshit definition, but she is clearly a pretty good researcher, according to the number of papers she has and the impact of the work. I would say to 10% PhD kinda recent grad (5 years after+-). Overall, pretty impressive work :) But in all honesty, it is not simple to call someone a top 1% something in competitive fields. Only the top 0.001% in ML are clearly top 1%.
She is probably good at "working" with people (who are really smart)
I think the biggest problem I see is people conflating ML engineer and AI engineer.
The former has a background in machine learning and the latter has a background in anything and is just using LLM APIs.

What is a top 1%?
one misleading thing about this video is : most people doing ML are not not into research but doing office jobs. Data manipulation techniques like SQL are more important that going too deep into ML algos. A recruiter will rather hire a backend engineer with good data manipulation skills than a ML algo expert.
Someone needs to hire a sound engineer. Even AI doesn't generate audio this bad.

@@tunde6747 I listened to samples of the audio track in the above video again to ensure it wasn't an issue with playback on my end. It isn't.
The audio track is filled with reverberations from beginning to end. This is due to the room in which the audio was recorded being unsuitable for use as a studio. There is nothing on the bare walls to prevent sounds from echoing, which is what I hear.
I owned a music studio from 2007 to 2012 so I have a bit of experience in this area. Fun times, but a great way to lose a lot of money.

i feel sorry for the next gen. It was already a large barrier to get into tech for young milennials. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are going to have to dig in very deep to even get an entry level job

@shreyanksingh7122 the data science market is dominated by Chinese. Because Chinese hire Chinese and white Americans think their country is competing with China in AI. So brown people get pushed into IT. If you are indian you will have a hard time finding data science jobs in America.

regarding tools, dumbing down of society: driven people, people who appreciate making things and how things are made, will be smarter and more enlightened. However many people are not interested in such so they just waste their time on indulgences. That is why there's the saying 'smart phones make dumb people.' It's easy to think that in our engineer world bubble others are like us, but the average literacy rate has dropped dramatically since smart phones. Hence the premise of the movie Idiocracy
