@zeitgeist5134 I grew up in San Diego. Alpine was the "great northwest," ya know, lol? Know those areas of bedroom communities that are often at risk of huge fires. Those areas weren't ever meant to have huge communities without huge firebreaks or other modern infrastructure. PG&E done CA when it went public and for profit like every other human need. None should be for profit. Housing, water, electricity, etc.

The N95’s that cup your face are the best at keeping the smoke out of your respiratory system. The Census just issued us cloth masks that didn’t cut it. So, there were a number of days I didn’t work because of the health hazard.

California is huge. Over half of the forests are federal, and most of these have been logged a few times. The rest is private, with generally livery low value timber. Oak woodland, for example. The forests are burning because, thanks to our burning of fossil fuels, conditions are now too hot and dry for our forests.

Indigenous people, my tribe, have been prevented from using fire as a land management tool. This is simply the result of complete fire suppression policies playing out. This will continue. Either fire is used responsible to manage the land, or large fires will come from accumulated duff and rotting trees. This is also due to capitalism informing management, as in thousands of trees per acre; not for forest health but for money maximization. It is sad that citizens in my ancestral territory will suffer due to these choices.

People (residents and emergency workers) are killed or injured or put in extreme danger, homes and businesses destroyed, wildlife destroyed, habitat destroyed, smoke degrades air quality miles from the actual fire, so many years of a scarred landscape and decades to come back fully. I live in an area that is unfortunately repeatedly impacted by fires. Tips I tell new neighbours to my area. Make a checklist and put it up somewhere which includes pets, papers, other things.
Out the door stuff that people don’t think about. 1) take pictures of your entire house contents, draws, closets, everything. It shows proof of possessions to insurance companies. 2) empty your fridge and freezer into a big black garbage bag. Drop it off at a food bank or even in a big garbage bin outside the area. Power will be off after 4 days your fridge and freezers are write offs even if your home is not impacted by fire. It’s an extra step but so worth it. 3) best one, grab your laundry hamper and throw any extra clothes in there but those dirty clothes are your favourite clothes to wear. You can clean them anywhere once you’re out of your home.
Bonus, figure out anything super duper sentimental that you wouldn’t want to lose and put it on the check list. The sentimental list isn’t as big as you would think when the fire reality sets in. Other than wrangling a cat, I can be out and on the road in under 30mins.

@@davidavard8461 nice try. All the conceivable “fuel collection” by all the campers in the world would not alter the observed outcome. Additionally, the Smokey forest fire prevention campaigns do not equate with absolute bans on fire. You’re just pulling stuff out of your backside.

We knew this one was coming, yes it was started at a particularly bad moment, but something like this was approaching inevitable. Most of that wilderness has not burned in decades, because we have not let it, and that makes everything worse when it does catch. Regular controlled burns, preferably with indigenous oversight, will be essential going forward.

Always had baskets and lists on every floor (in case there was time to grab other stuff). Important papers lived in the trunk of the car during fire season. It's permanently wired into my brain. 40 years later the smell of smoke still starts the checklist going.

Knows the terrain and fuels, knows fire behavior and history, knows the fighting techniques and tools available. Does a great job of explaining what is possible and what isn't. Advocate for prescribed burning. Somehow found him during the Dixie fire and even though I live nowhere near California I've stayed subscribed. It's a level-headed voice in a sea of sensationalism.

The Park Fire started about 100 miles north of me, near Chico, CA. It's a prime example of the fire risks of the foothills of the Sierras. Lots of canyons and difficult terrain to fight in. That area has a lot of remote homes that are next to impossible to save in such a fast and big fire unless the owners have cleared a huge amount around their home and can stop the embers from landing on roofs. If the winds blow it east, it will head up nto the mountains where other recent fires have cleared the fuel load and may stop.

Two other things to keep in mind:
    1) when you get the notice that you need to be ready to evacuate, that is the time to leave. If you wait until you’re told to go you’re going to end up going nowhere really fast (your entire area is going to be evacuating at the same time).
    2) if you get a mandatory evacuation order, call your insurance company. Your homeowners/renters insurance has a built in limit to pay for reasonable hotel and food accommodations in scenarios like this, and putting them on notice that you may have a fire-related claim will make processing that claim (if it comes to that) a bit smoother since, if they are following industry best practice, they should allocate a standby amount for a short period of time to see if you have a loss.
Depending on your carrier they may pay up front for a couple of days for your hotel stay/alternate lodging, or it may be reimbursement payments, but either way make sure you keep your receipts and take pictures of them and save them to a cloud storage or other online source so you always have them just in case.

This monster lit off practically in my front yard. I am secure enough now, but I had a clear view of the fire front moving down the hills to within a couple miles of my front door. My friends in forest management say they have been waiting for this one to hit. Most of the fire is in wilderness that we have not allowed to burn for decades, and that makes something like this both inevitable and far, far worse. Best practice continues to evolve, but any management suggestions that don’t involve regular controlled burn, preferably with Native American oversight, can no longer be taken seriously.
