    • @Jedi_Vigilante
      @Jedi_Vigilante 2 дня назад +20

      Apologies, but I must disagree. Unlimited terms is not why we have corrupt politicians. This is evidenced by the many GOOD representatives we have who have been in public service much of their lives. Most of these people are at the local/state level, but we have a few in federal politics (like Bernie Sanders and Sheldon Whitehouse). On the flipside, we have relatively junior elected representatives which cause inordinate amounts of damage as well. Also, if we kicked out elected representatives too soon, then we would continually be lacking in experienced leadership. If we kick them out too late, then we will still suffer from what damage they may do for a long time.
      Rather, McConnell is the epitome of why we need better candidates. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to accomplish this. Something like shorter terms (or a nationwide policy on recalling federal officials) might help, but only where the general citizenry is informed enough to know what their representatives are doing in the first place. The problem is and always will be the basic issue with representative democracy: that some treat their ignorance as equal to the knowledge of others. That their "equal voice" in the selection process means that their uninformed, potentially contrarian, completely separated from reality opinion is somehow the equivalent to the opinion of an informed, reasonable individual.
      P.S.- Beyond all of that, much of the worst damage done to our country is done by politicians who pass certain legislation on the promise that they will have a cushy position on a corporate board afterwards. Having term limits does nothing to limit the "revolving door" problem, it just gives it a predetermined deadline to get all the bad stuff in by... before they have to buy off the next person to fill their shoes.

      McConnell couldn't afford to lose Trump - he would have had a harder time getting the "boy scout" Pence to approve his plan for the federal court judges, so he stuck with the plan in spite of the downsides. Sacrificing the future for immediate gains. Look at the state of the 5th, 8th, and 11th circuit courts and see where he has succeeded in corrupting the courts.
