  • Like everyone else, when I initially saw the movie "Soul Food", I blamed Cousin Faith for what she did to "The Family" particularly Aunt Teri. But after viewing the movie for a second time, it's clear she isn't the real Bad Guy. Join me as I explain why.

    They did Teri so wrong in this movie. Let's not forget that she has financially taken care of their mother and Uncle Pete. Remember when Maxime tried to get her and Miles to pay for their Mother's bills and that they'll reimbursed in installments. The only thing I disagree with Teri was her trying to sell the house, get Uncle Pete in a nursing home, calling their cousin to try to deal with Lem and telling Lem that his wife was pregnant. Otherwise I wouldn't consider her the villain. Wait a minute didn't her own sister Maxine steal her bf and cousin Faith sleep with her husband? She was definitely right for saying Eff The Family!!!

      I see what you're saying. ALL the younger female characters were shown to be morally flawed. Teri's crime was choosing to be the upper echelon of the "modern" women and inherented her father's burdens and responsibilities. Teri became "Daddy". It's not natural for woman to be in these positions, therefore they become "b*tchy" and masculine. She eventually found out what it felt like for her FATHER. Although successful, "Daddy" was gambling and had side kids for a reason...he was stressed the hell out.

      @kingsirdaboss1995 who else was going to take care of her family? Should she have said, "sorry mom. Find a husband. I won't help you." They did put her in a bad spot, but she should just say "I'm not a man. Too bad?"

    • @kingsirdaboss1995
      @kingsirdaboss1995 3 месяца назад +13

      @GuyIncognito__ Taking care of "the family" and taking care of "mama" is 2 different things. Her adult able-bodied sisters, with husbands, could have taken care of themselves. What was Bird doing with herself prior to Teri giving her money to open a salon, pay for her wedding to a dude fresh out of jail, still lived at home with her mother and couldn't cook? Bird was clearly the irresponsible "baby girl" who liked to PLAY grown-up. Max had the privilege of being a stay-at-home mom of 3 children on Kenny's salary? But, wanted to "run things" with Teri's earnings?
      Last but not least, did Big Mama really KNOW about the MONEY in Uncle Pete's tv the whole time? Otherwise, why was she doing "white folks laundry" to help with Daddy's gambling debts, KNOWING he had an accruing money "stash" in the house? Either SHE was lying to her adult children about that money or "Daddy" was keeping it a secret from his own wife, so she could be a maid for white folks to help pay off his debts and "struggle" after he died? It doesn't make sense. I can't recall in the movie Big Mama ever CONFIRMING the "myth" of the money. I believe she KNEW where the money was, but she up and died right before telling Ahmad about it.
      Teri may have been "b*tchy", but clearly she wasn't stingy. Her family absolutely took her FOR GRANTED. Unfortunately, this is the case when someone is the oldest AND/OR the most successful child in Black families with NO patriarchal leadership.
      What was the excuse for this family?

      @@kingsirdaboss1995 think we agree. Teri was put in a bad spot. Her sisters should have helped. Mama was foul. At least they didn't try to show all the black women as Gods. We can all sympathise with Terri, she has been carrying the burdens(mostly financial) of her family from day 1 andever had time to just be a girly girl who can just throw herself in the arms of a man and let him take charge. Looking at her surroundings and being the first born she must have felt the pressure and the responsibility of having to be a big sister and keep the family together. So it makes sense that she would develop masculine qualities to earn a living and support her family but it came at the expense of not being able cultivate romantic longterm relationships with man. She cant keep a man because women like her end up breaking or emasculating man. So no man would be happy with Terri as a long term partner no matter how pretty a Terri maybe. Its a real tragedy for women like that

    I never thought of Teri as being the bad guy at all. But she wasn't all that good, either. She wasn't perfect and that's probably what makes her a standout character. She's not a full-on villain and she has her moments, but she's not as innocent as many like to think.

    @laymansjournal, great breakdown once again. I was only 7 years old when this movie first came out, so my perspective on it was limited. As I've grown up, I see clearly that the family did Teri dirty, despite her flaws. Maxine was definitely a hypocrite, and the men were portrayed weakly too often. I'm curious if you'll ever do a breakdown of Hitch or Think Like a Man. Although those two movies were somewhat entertaining, I think they're corny as hell. Waiting to Exhale would be a good one to analyze as well.

    Since you covered this movie, I’m barely a minute into the actual video itself, you should talk about the television show Moesha. So if you probably did, I say, sorry in advance, but that was a television show where they started to help promote the fracturing of the black male image. The character Dee played by Cheryl Lee Ralph, had an issue with what they did to Frank. It shows just how much the television show was in cahoots with ruining the image of black manhood. He fought with Moesha multiple times on the show played by Brandy Norwood, someone who was very rebellious for no reason. Yet I think that they had to throw in the fact that he had a child out of wedlock, because they were pretty much trying to usher in an image close to what we see today. That was back like 20 years ago.

    Soul Food is one of my favorite movies. I really love how you brought many things to light. I do see Big Mama is a villain for placing burdens on Teri. Also, her taking credit for what her husband did. Second, he sisters did her dirty as well. It was that what she did to Lem and her husband makes her flawed. Second, I never saw Cousin Faith as a villain. She was riding with Miles when Teri didn't. Also, she needed to stop running every time she had issues. Third, Max is a hypocrite. For Bird, I wished she married Samuelle but he is one of those brothers that uses his accomplishments and money to have people to bow down to them. However, Lem's pride got in the way by not telling Bird upfront about his situation. However, it doesn't justify why she went behind his back. I just had to give my thoughts on it.

    Yeah... Teri could have done better, but if we're the men/alphas we say we are, we must be bound to integrity. Issues with your wife today, which aren't overtly foul shouldn't allow you to break marriage vows. Taking money from a joint account without telling her is a sign of fear. At least tell her then do it. You're afraid of her? What are the chances your band will make it? Make a plan of how much time and money you'll risk before quitting. You have a family. You're not an individual. There's better investments to make with time and money.

    Great breakdown of the movie, good job. but I have to be honest I never liked them movie that much. oh its was ok, but never loved it as some did. I do feel Teri was done wrong in the movie. The only thing I did not like about her , was how she treated her husband, but I was not a fan of his either. but Teri to me was misunderstood, even with her faults. the character, I wonder if the writer has some deep issues with mixed race black women, but that is another issues. The character I hated the most was the Vivica fox character. I mean of all the men she could have chose for herself, she chooses her sister boyfriend, she was just as street as her trouble cousin, but the movie seems to excuse her behavior and again make Teri the bad guy. The Lisa long character was not ready to be a married wife. You were right she was acting more like a spoiled whining high school teenager than a married woman. Thanks for saying what you said about Big Mommy to. Again Treating Teir like she is the bad guy, Big mama should have been giving advice to all 3 of her daughters, they needed it. With big mama it was hug kisses and eat more food. Your right I find out all I needed to know about big mama at the start of the movie at the wedding scene. Sometimes there are problems that good food can't always solve. As for the men I did not like any of them. They are so badly written I forgot they were in the movie. It proves your point that the issues of poorly written black males, is still a problem in media.

    47:16 What aroused my interest is that Faith is wearing purple attire in both scenes. Purple is an exotic hue associated with creativity,
    emotionality, sensuality, femininity and mystery...The same attributes, along with support, that Teri didn't give to Miles. And perhaps Kenny as well.

    I remember watching this when I was a teenager and I was a big movie buff... But I was really into indie films and artsy films the most...so I didn't watch too many "hood classics" ... But I remember liking the movie A lot...up until the same point you mentioned (where the movie took a nosedive)...and the Disneyfication ending was tacked on a bit too...great character studies. As it is, I think it is good (not great)... But I definitely didn't pay attention to how all the black guys were portrayed at the time... Probably because I was so used seeing it even in "black movies".
