The song was written for the 1986 film of Nora Ephron's novel "Heartburn." Loosely autobiograpical portrait of a failed marriage between a writer and a journalist (Ephron was married to Carl Bernstein of "Watergate" fame). The movie starred Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. The music video for Simon's recording released in 1987 included home movie footage of Carly's childhood with her parents, who never divorced but were estranged by the time her father passed in 1960 at the age of 51. It is too bad she suffered from so much stage fright. The hour concert filmed on (I think Martha's Vineyard, could have been Nantucket). HBO show. She sang this song plus many others. One of my favorite female singers.

Great song, awesome arrangement/production - I think melancholic rather than sad, but perhaps the difference is only semantics? For me the song is more about the struggle and weight of keeping the family going while you have to do the heavy lifting of earning money, paying the mortgage, fixing stuff that breaks and maybe that's relationships as well as physical things? Actually she was around for a number of years. She started in the early 1970's and this song is from the mid-80's. She continues performing for many years.
