    • @laureanostella
      @laureanostella 7 месяцев назад

      I created the same trap for the CPDs a few days ago. I haven't started on it. But you forgot to hot glue the sides of the trap that's in the water. This way it forces the flow through the mesh only. That might be why you didn't have good suction.

    I've kept rainbow shiners for a couple of years. It's completely anecdotal, but the light on their tank has a sunrise/sunset mode. I swear the orange/red color the light gives off in the morning tricks them into thinking the other fish are firing up. They are spawning nearly every morning right now. I keep them upper 60s year round, had 100s of fry last year. Also, not necessary, but don't be afraid to turn up the flow. They are creek fish and like to play in front of the power heads. I'm not an expert, by any means, just my experience.

      100's of fry... Lol do you sell?😲🤓

    • @nancybintennessee9624
      @nancybintennessee9624 7 месяцев назад +6

      No, I don't like to ship, and the fry at that quanity were a TON of work. They grow slowly! I gave some to friends, put several out in a 170gal stock tank pond (ended up feeding a heron with most of those 😭) This year instead of collecting 100s of eggs, every few weeks after they spawn I gravel vac their tank. Leave the mulm and all in a 5 gal bucket and after a couple of weeks baby fish start to swim around. When they are free swimming I move them to a shrimp tank. Helps keep micro fauna in check and I don't have to feed fry multiple times a day. I don't get nearly as many fish that way, but more than enough to keep my colony going.

    You’ll find there are some modifications that can be made to make it better, but that will always be the case with something like this.
    Best of luck with the rainbow shiners as this was the other species of fish I wanted to try it out on besides CPDs and haven’t gotten to it yet.

      (OK FINE... straight up..
      Hell it's Pride month I will come clean... the innuendo and subtlety is driving me insane
      Mike does have one of the best fish channels that lines up with what I do with my collection quite well and I have always had similar philosophies to his. As a matter of fact because of me a lot of his ideas have been integrated into the education department's collection at Audubon Zoo where I used to work. So the professional and hobbyist aquarist in me is seriously a fan, but you'd have to be blind to not also be an ahem[clears throat] a "FAN"... speaking of I need a fan as it's suddenly got really warm in here😊 I've always loved the lab coat and safety glasses science lab vibe but I don't hate it when they come off, it's sort of the equivalent of a librarian taking their glasses off and letting their hair down... straight up he is really one damn sexy aquarium fish nerd. So there I said it, you happy now?😂...
      ... obviously I'm not alone and there are always people dropping innuendo in these comments as well as in other aquarium channels. I mean hell my boyfriend who is a botanist watches way too much Dustin's fish tanks( with me looking over his shoulder)... and my best friend who is also an aquarium nerd seems to watch Joey the king of DIY all the time... everyone has their techniques, interests, and also apparently their types lol. There is an amazing bunch of incredible Aquarium channels on RUclips, but you could certainly make a sexy man of the month calendar out of several of them like you would with the fire department or a rowing team LOL we really are very fortunate to be able to watch our favorite subjects by very talented and knowledgeable people many of whom are also blush inducing.)

    I've used LRB's homemade mesh box to float in a 20 gal for egg scatterer fish, Zebra/Leopard Danios, etc, put the fish in the box for a week or two, pull the box out with the fish in, and find fry in the tank every time. This is a very interesting method, pulling the eggs out from the fish, instead of the other way around as I've been doing it, might have to build this. Keep us updated

    I stuck a sponge prefilter over the end of my Python Hook (Like you put on the intake of a HOB filter). If it fits loose just put a ziptie around it. It will keep critters from going in. It helps diffuse the water when filling so it doesn't beat up the substrate as much too.

    14 to 15 hours of sunlight to get fish to breed. The fish are more comfortable in that tank because you have floating plants. More floating plants more comfort level.

    I've just ordered a few rainbow shiners which will go into a 1/2 barrel "pond". They will need to winter over inside. What is the minimum tank size for 12 of these fish. I'd like to be able to set it up so I can collect eggs as you have shown here. Please advise. I have not had an aquarium for several years. The last being a 110 gallon salt water set-up, which I sold. Thank You.
