I’m an African American woman and the absolute best gift my Pakistani boyfriend in college gave me was NFAK. I had never heard qawwali music before, but the first time I heard this song I was hooked. I wore tapes my boyfriend gave me out because I listened to them so many times. NFAK left us too soon.

I'm a white man that grew up on a farm in central PA. My parents played traditional southern gospel growing up. I moved to Philadelphia in 1989 and I've been going to Indian buffet restaurants since my arrival. A place called Tandor used to play music like this in the mid 90s. I would eat by myself and gain a spiritual enlightenment to the point of tears. The owners have changed 30 years later and now the Indian music is derivative of American Hip Hop with auto-tune and terrible contrived beats. I miss this music.

The partition of India and the post partition violence compelled their family to move to the broken western part of India, Pakistan. Those who say that NFAK is not Indian, are massively wrong. The whole art of Qawali is Indian and it has evolved to the current shape over centuries. Pakistan is an offshoot of India, so is Bangladesh - the clipped away Eastern wing of India. 🇮🇳🇵🇰 🇧🇩
