I'm not defending Ronaldo's pressing, or lack thereof, but isn't the problem very much related to how deep the defense drops while leaving the forwards so high? They create acres of space in the midfield, so breaking the press becomes easier. There's a reason successful high pressing teams also have very high defensive lines (MC, Liverpool). In addition, they seem to have no design to the pressing (are they trying to push the ball wide, to a particular side, into the middle, into a trap?).
Dean Henderson drives the defenders to play a high line. He is vocal and is great at organising the back four or five. While great saves are fantastic the defensive unit lacks leadership when they have a non vocal organising goal keeper behind them. It's no coincidence that the team went on a long run with Henderson in goal last season.
The forwards aren't pressing. If the defense is high and the forwards aren't pressing the ball will be kicked over their heads and the opposition will be through in on goal. If the forwards aren't pressing dropping off is better so the opposition stays in front of the defense.
This video has to be old, starting off with “Manchester United’s 4-2 Loss to Leicester City is one of the worst in recent memory” when they just lost 5-0 to Liverpool at home 😂
videos like this take a lot of time to produce, it's not surprising it's not terribly up to date. add to the fact that they likely have some oversight and approval process from the athletic's editors, and the timeline for putting out a video is extended further
@@fennec_5921 that’s why I said the vid has to be old, at least a few weeks. And that’s fine, it’s just funny to hear that result be called their worst in recent times with the context of the Liverpool game still very fresh in the mind.
This sounds like a coaching problem than a player prolem. Pressing isn't just about applying pressure directly. It's also about covering passing lanes and giving the opposition no room for build up. Why is this being blamed on Ronaldo? Were United good at pressing before Ronaldo came along?
@@subutaynoyan5372 do you know the meaning of cutting potential passing lines? have you checked his positioning? have you seen how he prevents backward passes from the opposition team? what are you talking about? he wouldnt run artound like a mad cow, or a youngster, yes! but his positioning does that, Did you watch the copa Italia semi final, Juventus vs Inter? did you see how that paid off?
I hate hearing a certain group of talented players can’t play together. They can but they need a coach with a plan, Pep literally plays 6 #10 types in the same team because they work hard and they’re super organized on every action.
Maybe pep managed them to play with his system meanwhile ole doesn't know how to made system with these players.. Look at first goal liverpool vs mu, their pressing was awful and unorganized, it's not first time we saw that, many times and many games of ole's gameplan called "express yourself"..
Pep will just sell or throw players not compatible with the team. For example, Ibra is not compatible with Messi, so he dropped Ibra, one of the best forward at the time. Just look how many players sold, benched, and bought under Pep
Cavani is the answer. He will run through a wall for any manager. At his age he won't last the whole game but he'll give you 60-70 minutes of high intensity pressing, but the other players would've to press cohesively aswell. Cavani, Ronaldo and Sancho with Bruno, Pogba and Mctomminay could work under a manager that uses a pressing style similiar to Klopp.
Since the season started everyone is shouting United has a great squad, they should be challenging for the title. But if you look closely they are one of the most unbalanced team in Europe. How can a team with 5 centre forwards and no competent dmf be called a 'great squad'.
Yes but ole HAS to fall on this sword. It was made abundantly clear in the summer by sources like Fabrizio Romano that Ole DID NOT prioritise a DMF. He felt that the options he had were good dnough and put a DMF as a nice to have rather than must have, 4th or 5th priority. Crazy, i know
Ronaldo, Cavani, Greenwood, martial and I guess you could say rashford and there’s an argument to say that Bruno plays like a cf more that a cam at points, seems like that’s how a 4231 on paper keeps turning into a 424 on the pitch
@@kidjunior7871 Technically Ronaldo, Cavani, Greenwood, Rashford, and Martial are all center forwards or at least want play there. Greenwood has been played out of position most of the time.
You bought Ronaldo to be Ronaldo, not Inter Milan Samuel Eto'o. If you can't build a team/system around Ronaldo and his skill sets and flaws, that's on coaching and management.
2 years since this video we have proof that Ronaldo was in fact NOT the problem. He was the only player who gave his life on the pitch, but it's very easy to blame the superstar rather than the rest of the players and especially the manager.
@Nob Gobbler I see your point, but players are not respecting their manager and his tactics anymore. Every game they make several individual errors. In their nationals they play superb. If they lost with spurs and atalanta sure Ole was sacked.
This is such a biased channel. They drop one video every week just to defame Ronaldo and tell that he's what is wrong with United ignoring everything else 😂😂
Ronaldo scores doubles vs atalanta is not for saving ole job, but he saving manu to stay at top group His interview say it all about the opponent having good coach
Man United's issue is that they have yet to adapt to Ronaldo’s approach as a unit and it's not CR7's fault. He saves himself for the big moments now, just as much as his rival Lionel Messi does. How is it that we all knew what to expect when we watched CR7 play for Real Madrid and Juve. But then when he returns to Man Utd we're suddenly surprised by his lack of pressing?
@@lightcase377 The issue is Rashford, Greenwood, Sancho, Pogba and etc are not good enough to decide if they will do the much needed job of covering for Ronaldo. It is not about what they want; it’s about doing what needs to be done to have the team operate as a cohesive unit and accomplish the more important goal which is of winning games; Some thing that Ronaldo is the best one at of probably only four on the team.
Because Man United can’t defend as well as Real Madrid and Juventus. How are you going to cover for a player who doesn’t press if you can’t even defend well with players who can press.
Bruno presses uncontrollably, United’s wide players don’t track back. This is a coaching problem. Add that to Maguire who has 4 relegations to his name and you understand why they’re so poor, Ronaldo isn’t at fault 👍
There is obviously some tactical problems. But you have to look at players like Harry Maguire as well. He's already made 11 mistakes leading to goal this season.
I don’t think they’re saying Ronaldo is a bad player. Just that his presence in the side has knock on effects on some of the surrounding players that the current manager isn’t equipped to handle
It is a coaching issue. They are not coached to press as one team. Some might blame Ronaldo but you got teams like AC Milan with some of the highest pressing in Serie despite using Zlatan, Giroud or Rebic as their striker. The difference is they are coached better and press as a team.
@Sparsh Khurana Ronaldo doesn’t press much for more than 10 years. It’s not like he started this season. The difference is that other coaches knew how to take the best of him without unbalancing the team. Ole doesn’t have a clue how to do that.
@Sparsh Khurana why should it come down to Ronaldo as if its his fault that United can't press? The guy is doing his part of the job like he should. He's scoring in almost every match. The onus lies on his teammates to accommodate him not the other way around.
They don’t though, they just make the point that Man U signing Ronaldo didn’t seem to make much sense if they wanted to play pressing football. It’s more of an indictment of Ole and the board than Ronaldo himself
Ronaldo has fantastic stats and has been a clutch player for United, whereas Messi hasn’t scored in a farmer league. But the title is “How Ronaldo is affecting Manu” sure, a team that hasn’t won anything since Ole is at the wheel. Speechless!
Even if you change the manager this team will never work efficiently. Either bruno or Ronaldo needs to be benched 2 forwards Ronaldo cavani or bruno cavani. Cavani is a a more important player than both.
@WE’RE WATCHING I don't think you know what is the basics of role in football. But here I make it simple 1. benzema bale Ronaldo, benzema track back 2. Neymar Suarez Messi Suarez track back. 3. Firmino, mane salah firmino track back. I'm order to play 2 wide forward like Greenwood and rashford you need someone to do the dirty job in the middle. Ronaldo isn't the man who will do that.
@WE’RE WATCHING first you need to understand the deep lying forward role before we even talk. Its practically impossible to to play bruno and Ronaldo together without one of them fizzle out, bruno is a fake striker aka the deep lying forward for the wide forward, now we have 2 forwards and 2 wide forward. It's basically 424 with Ronaldo on the field. With cavani? It's 4-2-2-2 very well spread, rashford and Greenwood stay upfront anticipate long ball from lindelof while cavani press to disturb opposition rythm. If you ever watch him in psg he spend nearly half of his time in the middle of the pitch like firmino or Pedro back then. Also its obvious that the reason why psg got only 83pts unlike their usual 90pts, he is the most important figure in psg and that's why tuchel mad and leave when psg sell him because he is not popular enough.
@WE’RE WATCHING do we actually have the squad to play other strategy efficiently? No We don't Play possession? Who the F going to keep the ball rolling on the left side of the pitch? Greenwood or rashford don't have the passing awareness of an actual winger like Sancho now we only left with Sancho. Get it? Only one actual winger, go pay your local team to play possession with 3 center forward and it will guaranteed a failure. Look even non league coaches can spot where did it go wrong with manchester united. you can say it's ole fault for being a yes man and pathetically thinking that he don't need a cdm and deep lying forward. No manager can save this club with the mess that ole has bring, even mourinho have clear philosophy on what kind of players he brought in, this is a mess.
Rooney was also great when playing with Ronaldo. It isn’t as if he was completely overshadowed. The season with those two and Tevez will show you that…

Well MU didnt need cristiano in the first place. U cant just buy players out of emotion or because they are really good, u also have to make sure they work in the team. Ronaldo don't rlly press unlike cavani which the united squad needs. I know the defensive structure of united arent that great either. But buying ronaldo did them more harm than good. Ronaldo is the proverbial cherry on top though, he exemplifies that pressing and positional play both start from the forwards and continues down into the team unit. Ronaldo is neither disciplined positionally (because he has the skill to make an impact anywhere in the final third) nor a presser (for physical reasons).
@@grantreill1966 show me a video of him after 2014 where he's pressing all game or disciplined positionally. And of course the team is fundamentally different, but this current man utd team has world class players as well and should be doing much much better than what they are atm.
@@ishanmishra9383 that is exactly the point I was trying to say. He leads the line but doesn't do anything except be a glorified poacher who's a little more skilled in link-up play. He doesn't press, just kinda wanders around and waits for the ball to appear at his feet. He's not disciplined and not a presser. In my original comment, I meant to communicate that Ronaldo is the problem cherry on top of all the other problems. Everyone looks to him for experience and wisdom, and all he provides is a plan of how to get him the ball more.
Ronaldo was never really the problem , he was just the scapegoat . There is simply something fundamentally wrong with the entirety of Manchester united . Manchester united needs a hard reset, a completely new team , however that will never happen.
The problem is coaching and the lack of training for developing game sense to make those intelligent decisions in game(that Ronaldo asking Greenwood to press is a great example). You are tactically shallow if you think a player like Ronaldo should be vital in a pressing scheme. Cutting passing lanes is a much more efficient way of controlling the game rather than having near perfect zonal marking and pressing cohesion but to cut passing lanes you would need more planning and training.
Ibrahimovic is 40 and when he plays Milan still press high and he does his part too in that. He might not run all over the pitch to but he helps to shutdown passing lanes which in turn leads to amore effective press
Problems are Ole, Phelan, Mckenna, Carrick etc. they are so tactically inept that they can’t find a tactic to accommodate Donny, Matic, Telles. McFred will never ever ever ever win United any trophy if they do not improve. Another is Ole favoritism.
To the people who think Ronaldo is carrying the team: He is solving a problem he is partially creating. That looks like "carrying" (and it is, to an extent), because he is the one who scores the majority of the goals. I completely agree that there is a coaching problem, all I want to say is that these two problems are not mutually exclusive.
But people are saying it's a problem as if we didn't expect this. We knew what Ronaldo offered. It really is up to the coaching staff to make it work. Them struggling to do that is not "Ronaldo's fault".
He didn’t create the problem. He’s more of a solution than a problem. You just need to know how to arrange your team to fit him. If I buy a super fast sports car and go on the highway without knowing how to properly drive it and crash against a tree, it’s not the car’s fault. 😁
@@antoniobrandao7139 yes but if you buy a sports car while living on a farm...and then have to start paving all the roads around the farm just so you can use it...does it still make sense to keep the sports car? Or should you just get something that works with what you have?
Too many Ronaldo fan boys cannot make that distinction. They also cannot make the distinction of poor recruitment and a great player. Ronaldo is a great, but united should have prioritised the midfield. The Ronaldo fan boys pretend that Tifo have not done an analysis on PSG's issue when the front three play together
@@aldobonaso3481 Agreed but it still isn't the car's fault. You buy it for a purpose and it fulfills that purpose, the rest is on the driver. 😁You don't put a sports car on a farm and you don't put a tractor on the highway.
So it’s Ole’s system then, if Ole even has one. Would love to see how a semi-prolific striker with good pressing stats would affect Man Utd better. They’d even be in a far worse position. He’s far from the main problem.
So basically you have Ronaldo who scores a goal a game but won’t defend and need covering for. Will get blamed for a who teams lack of defensive shape… United have a manager with the organizational skills of a 5 year old, 3 other attacking player who lack a real output in attack and also don’t press well, 2 midfielders who have an impossible job of covering too big of a space and a defense that cost over 200 million but still needs two cdms to help out I’m other words Ronaldo is still the only one who is performing what you want from him if United don’t figure it out it’s not he’s fault
@@tamunotamuno3564 he never pressed in his career and definetely wont start doing it now. This is a coaching issue, why the media and everyone blames Ronaldo is beyond my understanding.
Ronaldo does create a problem in the modern era of football that coaches need to get around, of course when the "problem" is as good as Ronaldo a lot of coaches work around it. However, a prime Ronaldo probably any team will find a way to fit him in, a 36 year old Ronaldo not so much. Ole clearly doesn't know how to make a system that suits Ronaldo, not that he was doing great without him either but there are coaches that would definitely not want Ronaldo as they wouldn't want to change their system around him, Klopp is an obvious example. Having Ronaldo wasn't the main issue that Man Utd needed to address, their midfield is probably the biggest concern, they don't play as a team and all Ronaldo is doing is papering over them cracks, obviously Ronaldo just is that good that he can make it work but he definitely doesn't fix the issue that was always there.

Both, the manager has little effect on Ronaldo, as we have seen with the last 3 managers he played with. He won top scorer under pirlo and he still got sacked
Same thing at Juve, always blaming Ronaldo. My question is why nobody has make a video about how Ronaldo hasn’t had a real coach in over 3 years. Common tifo, it’s a bunch of these videos from you but you guys never touch on how he had Ole and Pirlo as coaches 🤦♂️

My comment didn’t came from this video alone, after signing to Man U they make 2 videos criticizing him for not pressing. When for example PSG have 2 players that don’t press Ney and Messi and they don’t have tremendous problems… cough Ole tactics Like I said they make 2 videos about him being the main problem for not press and then made a video about Alleged Allegations right when he sigh It’s funny to me, so many topics like: why is ole still the manager, why Messi has trouble in the Ligue 1, Neclastle Project, What happening with Sancho. And you chose to make a third video about Ronaldo not pressing…. I’m sorry but that’s shady AF
Agree with all the points in the video. The title however is misleading. Should be "why playing Ronaldo in Ole's 4231 system doesn't work". The coaches need to understand that Ronaldo can't play in the 4231 system they've been building. Either change it up or don't play Ronaldo at all and the unit will function better.
Agree except for the point on the system. The problem is personnel as it can work with the right players unfortunately for all their skill few are in the first team squad at present.
I can’t really see how this is a “Ronaldo problem” they brought him to score goals and as of now he’s delivered. That being said both Maguire and Fred are probably the weakest links at the moment IMO.
It's hilarious to read all the comments from Cristiano haters. 🤣 This video aged terribly, and anyone who watches United games and thinks TH did smth good, clearly doesn't know football. United are still terrible, it's in 80% Ole ball with a new squad& they won the last points by luck, not great tactics. They had their worst-ever defeat, 0-7, after CR left. Funny - I didn't see the media putting all the blame for this on one player like they did put it on CR when he was at United. Except with CR they never lost 0-7. 😂They don't play attacking football at all, their tactics and style are dull, without any fresh concept. Football is a team game and the basic thing is, that the result is NEVER one person's fault. Game and play depend on 10000 factors. It was never CR's fault. He arrived at the club in shambles and a chaotic team at his veteran age, and he simply never should have had such a good, sentimental heart and agreed to this nonsense. But he had feelings for United and rejected City for them, such a shame. CR plays literally the same now, in his twilight years, as Haaland does, and so he would be perfect for City. Pep would know how to use CR brilliantly. TH doesn't have a clue. Good luck. We will see what TH and United will achieve next season. We will see who will have the last laugh. P.S. Of course, no one asks how Messi made PSG worse - literally before Messi PSG were always winning French cups and Ligue 1 with ease, after Messi's arrival they actually had troubles in the Ligue 1 this season and they didn't win any French cup. What's more, before Messi PSG was in the semis and the final of the Champions League, after Messi's arrival they are out at R16 for 2 years Messi is there. So Messi actually made them worse, but the media like this one here, and fans, will never talk abt it since Messi is a media darling, the most protected, PR-based footballer in history. and Messi also doesn't press at ALL, but somehow, I don't hear anyone talk 1 thing abt it. It's all on the manager. He cannot coach the team to work well together. It's so common now that you see teams pressing and falling back together. We've not done that in years. We're always stretched. Jose tried to counter that by making them sit deep and isolated the attackers.

Ronaldo isn’t a pressing forward… he’s a sublime finisher. The problem at MU is that they sit back and try to counter-attack. Ronaldo would have better at Man City or Liverpool as they pin down their opponents is their own half.

In fact, during 2021/2022 season players like Elanga, Rashford, Cavani, Mata and many more destroyed so many chances and great passes CR7 gave them.
Ronaldo carries a struggling Man United and this is the narrative. Messi does fuckall in ligue 1 and no one does. I'm sure Ronaldo also created issues at Juve which is why they're at their worst form in over a decade. And people actually use the words "PR7" unironically.
This is why his signing kinda concern me, because what we need is a better midfielder. Or at least sign another midfielder that can cover the job of pressing.
Okay clearly the CR7 fanboys are jumping to conclusions here. The title is a bit clickbaity. But it’s a good analysis on how disfunctional Man Utd are as a team and how Ronaldo’s playstyle has made that more noticeable. Ronaldo is a good player…but Man Utd does not have any team, system or tactical structure/s, let alone one Ronaldo functions well in. He does not press that much which makes Man Utd’s lack of good pressing ability more visible. They shouldn’t have signed him. (Listen to Tifo’s podcast on Tifo IRL to get a better understanding of their opinions on Ronaldo and Man Utd atm). They have too many players rostered that occupy the left-flank attacking role to begin with before Rolando signed, but definitely too many attacking players. They also have players who simply aren’t good enough. But more importantly, Ole is playing people out of position/in formations they are not suited to. I like the 4-2-3-1 a lot but Man Utd’s squad is not functioning well under Ole. Maguire, Pogba and McTominay are not in their best-performing position. Makes me think a lop-sided 4-4-2, a 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 would work better at times albeit take my opinion on that little sidenote with a grain of salt as an armchair FIFA tactician haha.
I disagree that we shouldn’t have signed Ronnie back cause he’s scoring goals and other managers have won things with him as the focal point. Plus it doesn’t matter what formation we play if we have a poor system in play, we need a better manager. Apart from that I agree with your comment.
Ronaldo carrying United : Finds problem Messi still to contribute for a goal in Ligue 1 for PSG : nothing Ronaldo has always been a victim to media bias
Sky sports and Talksport made the most of targeting Ronaldo, while post Ronaldo, United was worse in scoring goals. ETH doesn't like to play a penalty box striker. Neither he has the accuman to coach and develop a creative false 9 like Messi or Firmino when he is stuck with Bruno, Sancho and now Mount. ETH has done good things with United, but he handled Ronaldo case poorly. We paid dearly by not having a specialised central striker in the team and that costed us FA cup and Europa League. He didnt wanted Ronaldo and he instigated ways in making Ronaldo taking matters in his own hand, forcing his way out. To think he played Weighorst and Martial amounting to lowest goals scored by MU in a season. We have Hojlund, but lets not get carried away, he is just a kid, and we don't have a senior striker in the team to guide him. Its going to be very hard for the kid. Hope he learnns quickly.
Ronaldo and Messi have never pressed Opposition goalkeepers have covered more metres than Messi in some of his Barca games If you can't build winning sides around these talents you're, well, you're solskjaer
Watch him play for united and you'll see differently. He just doesn't run around like James milner. He does however seem to always score - 9 goals in the last 11 games.
There's a difference between pressing like a headless chicken and pressing as an organized unit. Ronaldo is smart enough to preserve his energy and cut opposition's passing lane. His teammates however, lacks coaching.
Not the only one… I think these people don’t watch the match properly lol. So many players in the world also don’t press haha just cr7 is popular.. the bigger you are the larger your shadow. I’m not cr7 fan, I’m not even a manunited fan but I feel this blaming onto him is not justified as u read sports news and watch the matches you will see the problem is not Ronaldo
Anyone defending ronaldo and blaming OGS, don't you see liverpool front three always have that spirit to press? Slow defenders and midfielders make it so the team should play low block...
Oh Tifo.. It seems that you haven't taught your audience anything. On point analysis on something that was clearly obvious to anyone that has some basic understanding of the game.. It's not Ronaldo's fault of course, he would be incredibly valuable in a team that is more suited for that kind of player. Man Utd just played, and would have played better without Ronaldo, paradoxically.. Ole being incompetent is a completely different issue.. To bad they could not sign Conte..

This dude doesn't know what he's talking abt.
Oh aight professor
Maguire is the issue because he's too slow and his price was too high, so he's undroppable
They also did half arsed pressing in the Liverpool game which cost them. Well, more so nobody really knew how and when they were supposed to press.
Or when they jus won against tottenham with 3-0
videos like this take a lot of time to produce, it's not surprising it's not terribly up to date. add to the fact that they likely have some oversight and approval process from the athletic's editors, and the timeline for putting out a video is extended further

No we still don’t press

Cavani is the answer. He will run through a wall for any manager. the gaps from midfield is exposing his lack of pace which explains most of his errors, granted his overall form as been poor
It is a coaching issue. They are not coached to press as one team. Some might blame Ronaldo but you got teams like AC Milan with some of the highest pressing in Serie despite using Zlatan, Giroud or Rebic as their striker. The difference is they are coached better and press as a team.

2 forwards Ronaldo cavani or bruno cavani.
Cavani is a a more important player than both.
@WE’RE WATCHING I don't think you know what is the basics of role in football.
But here I make it simple
1. benzema bale Ronaldo, benzema track back
No
We don't
Play possession? Who the F going to keep the ball rolling on the left side of the pitch? Greenwood or rashford don't have the passing awareness of an actual winger like Sancho now we only left with Sancho.

Ronaldo is a great, but united should have prioritised the midfield.

tbf he does create an issue in pressing

Love the candid honesty. Great points.
