thank you very clear and concise. Its still one of the best introductory videos on the ve 20. the ve-20 really sounds great playing my Native American Flutes.
Robin T., live electronics have quite a long history. What type of live electronics do you mean - processed sounds? Use of a microphone? Which instruments? One of the earliest examples of live processing is Otto Luening and Vladimir Ussachevsky's October 1952 performance at the MoMA (Luening played two pieces on flute that used delay). Terry Riley's first recording, Dorian Reeds from 1966, features sax and delay. Morton Subotnik did some very interesting work with live processing (check out "The Key to Songs," 1991), as did Joel Chadabe and Stockhausen. Gordon's Mumma's work is interesting (check "Hornpipe" from 1967). Pauline Oliveros did processing/delay with accordion. Performance artist Laurie Anderson uses looping and all kinds of processing effects. Pierre Boulez wrote "...explosante-fixe..." in 1973/1993 for MIDI-flute and orchestra. Others: Todd Machover, David Berman, David Tudor, George Lewis, Rhys Chatham, and John Zorn. Just a start! Are you writing a thesis on this topic?
Playing the effects at the min&max margins - which I do myself also to understand an effect - is very useful for this video, I got the ideas in the product, thanks
Great videos!!! Those triads and parallel fifths sounded eery and medieval, like Georgian music... very cool! The boss ve-20 is a great unit and I love using effects with my flute as well. I only use the reverb with some delay for my monitor mix at gigs, but those harmony's sound good. It's almost scary how real they can sound now.
Hi Mellissa, Great job. and Thank you. I use a AMT Wireless Mic setup for my Sax through a DBX GoRack then going to a Yamaha DXR10 powered speaker. I'm going to add this Vocal Processor to my setup.
why is the looper not sounding similar to the rest of the sound level. It sounds like its going through a laptop speaker. Just thought i would mention this. other than this wow I am impressed with you round using this pedal.
I have a Boss VE-20, the problem is you have to manually change it to match the key you are singing and playing your instrument in, with it laying on the stage floor as a peddle it is impossible to see the display, the manual makes it sound like it will automatically correct itself if you forget to change the key manually, if that where the case you could just set it for one key and leave it, I tried to see if I could tell the difference if I just left it and started singing in another key and it seemed like the harmony was off then. so I don't know if it auto corrects for the key I am in. anyone know the answer???
freaking sweet, nice loops at the end. I have the same pedal I use for my alto sax and it's tons of fun, however I can't figure out how to turn the empty tracks into customized ones, have you played with those settings at all?
Thanks! Yes, you can customize those "user presets" with your own settings. I have created a preset for each of my pieces, and renamed them by song title so it's easy to get the right preset quickly in a performance. Just scroll to one of the presets and change the settings, effects, harmonizers, delay, reverb, etc like you want it. You can name your sound whatever you want if you go to MENU > NAME. The user manual is really helpful, if you haven't checked it out! static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/VE-20_OM.pdf
Hi Melissa, I am a flute player and I need to buy a pedal for my live performances. All what I need is some reverb, echoes and effects like these, because otherwise the sound is somehow flat and too dry. Do you think this pedal is good for me? I'd also like to ask you if that pedal is good for radio microphones, since I use to play the flute on a radio mic instead on a normal one. Thank you!
Tx for your help Melissa. I've short listed the VE20 to add to my gear. My question: I have made several loops made in music maker software including drums, bass, riffs etc. Can I save them on the Boss VE20 to carry on my trips? Or am I just restricted to making up loops with mouth sounds, clicks, claps and oohs etc.
+Edrich Fernandes Hey Edrich, sadly, the VE-20 does not save or import loops in that way. :( You can't save multiple loops, either. It can just do one at a time, and once you turn off the machine, it's gone forever.
+sonyqTV Thank you for that. I've already bought the VE20 and realized that I can't save loops. No problems. Forces you to get creative instead of staying with stale loops. Anyways the sounds and effects are awesome and I even use it for preaching with fx reduced. Has great compressors etc.
Sorry to not have gotten back to you sooner. :( I'm glad you're enjoying it, it's a pretty powerful preamp and effects processor! I just wish the looping was more sophisticated. -peace, mk
Thank you very much for posting... this is great, very inspirational!! If you use the VE-20 to lower the pitch an octave, and use only the processed signal, is there a delay?
I use a PA system with a small mixer, works very well for studio as well smaller venues. This pedal has one 1/4" output and 2 stereo XLRs. The 1/4" out doubles as a headphones jack, so technically you don't even need speakers to hear the effected sound through the pedal. :)
I have a VE-20 and I'm wondering how it compares to the new Boss VE-2.The VE-2 is made for use with a guitar, but is there anything else.I'm wondering if it would be a good addition or just duplication.
can you undo the very last loop w/o erasing the previous ones? and are you still using the ve-20 or some other unit that's even better?. Nice vid thanks for sharing.
I need to set one effect on each side, Radio on one side and chorus on the other side,so on stage I can just tap down on one side for an effect(left) and tap down the other for a different effect(right) so I don't need to dial it in on stage? Thanks
Hey Melissa, On the ve-20, what do you think the difference is between "Unison" and "Doubling"? Have you ever used them? Aren't they the same thing? Thanks in advance! -Charles
Charles N. Greggo They are actually different effects, though the terminology is confusing. I can hardly tell any difference when I play with "unison" selected (though I only play flute with the VE-20, so it might be different for vocals or other instruments). "Doubling" emulates a double-tracking effect - kind of like if you recorded yourself playing a melody, then recorded over it again playing the same thing. It's similar to the "6 voice" preset. There definitely is a noticeable difference when "doubling" is selected, but there is a major problem here for me. When playing short notes on the flute in the 2nd or 3rd octave, the doubled notes sound detuned (you can really hear this with delay). There are also different settings for each one - for double, you can change the intensity (light/normal/dark); with unison, you can change the voice "gender" (from -10 to +10), volume, and key. If you want to check out the user manual, it's covered on page 18 (right column under "Double/Harmony") - here's a link to a PDF of the manual online bit.ly/1y8uHBY.
sonyqTV Hey thanks for writing back! I'm getting really good at programming the VE-20! When I get my new p.a. system, I'll have to play around some more with the doubling vs unison issue. I'll bet if I pan voices 1 & 2 to Left and Right (in stereo) than it'll probably create a bigger and fuller sound. Thanks again! Oh hey, did you see that girl on the news who botched up the National Anthem on her piccolo? I felt so bad for her. But hey, it's not like I've never sang a bad note on stage before. Bye for now!
sonyqTV- Melissa, thank you for the video- I am curious what you use as a pick-up for your flute? or are you playing through a mic-- anyway, what are you using to get the signal from your flute? thanks!
+Shannon Crane Hey Shannon, thanks for watching! I play through a condenser mic, which is clipped to my headjoint. You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/lV6wFxE-mKc/видео.html :)
+James Brohard lol that's because you are hearing the playback from her speakers. the sound is not coming out of the pedal. ha ha, sorry I had a good chuckle.. cheers mate
+James Brohard If you are using the same speakers that loop should not sound so poor compared with the original. They should be a very close match if you have it all adjusted correctly.
I am a flute player, so that's just what I do and how I use this pedal. I didn't see many videos out there about effects pedals for flutists, so I wanted to give the perspective of a wind player. I agree, some effects work better than others for the flute!

Thanks for a really good demo, I've been thinking of buy a VE-20 to use with my Saxophone.
Go for it! This is a great machine, it would work great for any instrument played through a microphone.
Thank you for this demo. You blew my mind when you implemented the lower fifth through a flute. Super freaking cool.
Nice video's. I am not even a flute player, but its nice to have a peek into your world. I didn't even know electric flutes exist.
No, there is no lag. Good question! Thanks for watching the video!
Thank you SO very much from the Jersey Shore! Smiles... I'm buying a VE 20 ASAP!
thanks.......I am now using the Boss VE-20, but I still wanted to develop more typical of the distortion effects because I love metal music.

the background music was a terrible idea, but the demo is nice otherwise.
This !
A pedal demonstration without someone's dirty sock!? This Is AWESOME!
Thanks for all information! very usefull!
My pleasure!
yeay fantastic, I play flute, this is so inspiring!!!! thanks so much😄
you are really good at flute!
Yes, this is definitely my go-to stompbox!
Thank you, Dana! :)
why is the looper not sounding similar to the rest of the sound level. It sounds like its going through a laptop speaker. Just thought i would mention this. other than this wow I am impressed with you round using this pedal.
The distortion makes it sound a bit like a Chinese Dizi flute that has a vibrating membrane between the embouchure and finger holes.
You did a good demo on this pedal!

Calm down guys. She's a married woman, and a kept one at that. The rock on the finger is a good indicator.

can i use it to my recorder?(flauta dulce).Do i have to use an electrical instrument?
is it possible to change between effects using the pedals with your feet, so you can do it on stage - or do you have to press the small buttons?

Is it possible to save effects to a file with the harmony pedal off???

Are you able to resume playback using the looping effect?
Hi, does anybody know how the strobe effect is created? I would like to create it with my tc-helicon voice live play.
YESSSSS!!!
and is it possible to use more than one effect at a time?
I need this for my didgeridoo.
Your flute. Your pedal. Your face.. got me feeling some kinda way.
Hi, does it work the 1 octave low efect on high frequencies with the flute?
Thanks!
Hi. Nice informative video. I need to purchase this effect processor. please help me. I am Indian Bamboo flute player. Please i need your help.
I wonder whether it works with a renaissance recorder...
How can you save harmony lines on the vocal pedal?
Can I attach microphone + Boss VE20 + active monitor or do I also need a mixer / sound card?
It works with mic + VE-20 ---> amp. I use a mixer to help get a better sound, and it's needed for my PA system.
My! There is no USB output on this fine technology. How do I save on my computer?
I connect the VE-20 to a mixer (or audio interface), and connect directly from the mixer to a recording machine (such as the ZOOM H2) or computer.
Once you started to play that loop seems like the sound quality from the pedal sucks compared with your original phrase. Why is that???
+James Brohard lol that's because you are hearing the playback from her speakers. the sound is not coming out of the pedal. ha ha, sorry I had a good chuckle.. cheers mate
+James Brohard If you are using the same speakers that loop should not sound so poor compared with the original. They should be a very close match if you have it all adjusted correctly.
Not sure most of the effects you used to demo are very good sounding for a flute. Your voice is beautiful, why not just sing for us to demo the VE-20?
I am a flute player, so that's just what I do and how I use this pedal. I didn't see many videos out there about effects pedals for flutists, so I wanted to give the perspective of a wind player. I agree, some effects work better than others for the flute!
Nice! Just a question here: how do I save my different settings on each "effect"? Is it on "users" or how does it works?
great vid !tnks..
hey, i like your video, i only have a question hope you can anwer it... do you know if i can pause de loop, and then play it again?
Oscar Tufic unfortunately, no. The only thing you can do it stop it altogether, which will erase any loops that you made. You will need a more sophisticated loop station for that - check out the BOSS Loop Stations RC-30 or RC-3.
thanks!!! nice video thou
There was no difference with the distortion selection?
AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEE I LOVE YOU GIRL

Hi, I want to ask you, have you the manual in spanish language?, please!!
VICTOR CARCAMO SILVA Yes. Manual is in spanish, french, and english.
Ve 20 or DD7?
Cool
hiiii ...i cant sing that much good if i use this do i sound good :-(
oops should have said flutes sound great thru the ve-20 with effects
Tap delay?
Unfortunately, there is no tap delay in this pedal.
i love you!
POCA CREATIVIDADE ,PRA DEMONSTRALE EL APARELHAGEN...
ill buy one to go with my boss slicer pedal..only if you marry me :)..nice demo.
Graham Byrne creeeper!
Hi
can someone tell me how MELISSA is micing her flute please
tightnoose Hi tightnoose! I use a K&K Silver Bullet condenser mic with a PA. Check my mic demo here: ruclips.net/video/lV6wFxE-mKc/видео.html
I found them but thanks anyway. what we really need is a synth flute but not an ewi
tightnoose totally agree!!

What happens to the device? Use a non-PSA power adapter
You're a groovy chick!
