The side effects of the experimentation causes them to get ill which is why Liquid Snake wants the DNA remains of Big Boss in order to create a cure for them. Liquid wants to help them because he believes you should look out for those genetically related to you (even though he hates his actual father and brother anyway). *Liquid Snake actually was lied to by his creators and he was the one with the dominant genes. Thus, Snake proved that genes didn't determine your fate by beating Liquid despite having inferior genes (even though technically Liquid would've just killed him in the end if it weren't for FOXDIE). *Revolver Ocelot is actually a double agent who is working directly for the President. Oh, and another bit of trivia since this won't let me edit my post: Colonel Campbell had an affair with his brother's wife and therefore is Meryl's true father. He only confesses this to Snake in the ending where she dies, though since he says he wanted to tell her the truth after the mission I presume after the good ending he explained it to her in private off-screen. EDIT: Another bit of silliness; despite the twist that Solid had the recessive genes and Liquid had the dominant ones all along, in real life brown hair like Solid is a dominant gene and blonde hair like Liquid is a recessive gene.
@@Dreadnautilus as far as the hair goes, both Liquid Snake and Solid Snake are naturally blonde. If you watch the mission briefings you see that not only is it blonde, it's also about the same length as Liquid's. Solid Snake dyes and cuts his hair so he won't be mistaken for the terrorist's leader. This seems to have been retconned in the twin snakes remake, however.
I think we should all praise internet historian for managing to condense the whole story of the first Metal Gear Solid into the length of a single cutscene.
If you don't have the game box to get Meryl's number you can just call the Colonel a bunch, after five calls or so Mery's number will just show up in your codec list.
You can tell he's a huge Metal Gear fan, because he knows the best way to make fun of MGS's ridiculous plot is to literally just summarize it straight.
Exactly! Just peel back the madness of Kojima to reveal that underneath was more layers of madness all surrounding a woman with a snake scar on her stomach.
Metal Gear is an awesome story, but you cannot take it seriously after the third wattpad tier rambling about war or the battlefield written by a Japanese dude who’s never been within a hundred miles of one.
@@my9thaccount140 the funny thing is the first two metal gears weren't even that insane and then after MGS was released it just went batshit after that mind you since 87 metal gear solid has always been an anti-war/antinuke message
The part where snake swallows cigarettes somehow without damaging them and throws them up without damaging them again made me determined to improve my deepthroat game.
@@ArthurJGibson"fuck VPNs"? Huh? What a weird comment. They're a legitimate tool that has good use in certain situations. Seems very fucking weird to hate them overall unless you're a complete tech moron.
Was my favorite game in 1998. Few extra things: 1. You can get to the hangar via alternative route using vent in the bottom left corner. 2. When you look at meryl from the vent when she exercise, when you go out of the vent and in again to look she changes exercises. You can repeat it several times. Each time it's something different and eventually she gets hot from all that and starts to undress. 3. If you don't get a gun before getting to darpa chief you get a different cutscene when meryl points gun at snake as he walks out of cell - since you can't pull a gun on her as you didn't get/find one yet. 4. When you are caught in hangar lasers I guess technically speaking it's true the guards get alerted, but what actually happens is the hangar door closes in a cutscene so there's no way to get out, area gets filled with gas and it's game over. 5. after tank fight when before we go to hall with bodies killed by ninja snake needs to shoot down a generator with a remote nikita missile to turn off electric floor 6. in Psycho Mantis fight there's actually a sefeguard coded in. In case the user has broken port nr. 2 in the console and for some reason can't switch to it there's another way to make mantis vulnerable. When you're not switching for a long time campbell and naomi will call you several times and in the end tell you to shoot the marble statues in the room. When you do that he can't read your inputs from port nr1 7. In the cave with wolfs at the end when meryl stands we can hit her. When we do that a wolf comes and bites us. However if we hit her and quickly hide in the box, the wolf will come and piss on the box instead. From that point on the box is marked and wolfs don't attack us when we're in it. This helps when backtracking through for the sniper. Similar result is achieved with handkerchief from sniper wolf. 8. In the cell we can just hide under the bed. When Johny (that's the name of the guard) comes back from toilet he thinks we escaped and opens the cell. Same result as using ketchup in the end. 9. The bomb is not always there. It depends on difficulty and then is randomized on top of that. Same goes for a cold - you can get it or not and snake can start sneezing - you need to take medicine if he does. 10. In hind fight when we wait long enough the team will start to call us with hints. One of them is to use stereo audio ques to know where the hind is flying/hiding. But if we had mono tv in that time, the game recognizes it and Campbell and Mei start to say stuff like "Don't worry... not everyone can afford a stero tv" or something like that and Mei ling is like "a Mono Tv...". You can simulate it today for example while playing on PlayStation 3 and going into console settings and selecting sound output to mono. 11. The card is not always "easily found" on the ground. Depends on difficulty, but the card can be in one of 7 places and some involve a mouse, that can steal the card and hide in air vent. You have to find the rat and kill it with stinger for example. 12. Key needs exactly 60 seconds at minimum to turn color/shape.
If you mess up 8 badly enough, eventually the guard will rush to the bathroom and the ninja will let you out. (Or something like that. It's been 20 years.)
My favorite part about this is that it's like a small child asked his parents to tell him the story of MGS1 before bed and the parents just went completely off the rails for two hours.
Pro tip, use the different boxes to fast travel, you equip a box and wait in the back of the truck and it will take you to the different areas associated with the box.
@@Bearguy7700 It's not *that* much faster, though, since the cutscene of the guard looking at the box takes some time, and you still have to walk to the nearest truck and then from the arrival truck to the place you actually want to go. It's a bit faster, but you're trading walking for waiting.
You can travel between the Heliport/Tank Hangar and the Nuke Building, and to the snowfield from either, but you can't fast travel _from_ the snowfield.
I like to imagine that the only reason why grey fox kept monologuing is was because he kept trying to say farewell but liquid just kept failing to kill him each time and he didn’t want to leave an awkward moment for the three of them
I had no idea the old videos existed and are just stuck in a playlist. This is amazing, this was an amazing video and probably took insane amounts of editing, but somehow the most significant part of this video is the realization of an entire playlist of more videos. What a discovery
Congrats and Merry Christmas! You're in for a Christmas treat my good man! I highly recommend the Resident Evil 5 vid, because while they are all great there just aren't many games with so much to riff on as Resi 5.
When I found out Psycho Mantis wouldn’t be able to read your mind if you plugged your controller into the player 2 port, it blew my childhood mind. One of the coolest hidden game mechanics I’ve ever experienced.
I didn't know that my first playthrough, and accidentally beat him the alternate way: destroying all the busts in the boss room. That works because... reasons. But it wasn't on purpose, because I thought I was being clever by fan-firing all my weapons and hoping I happen to hit Mantis while he strafed my shots. I had like 7 FAMAS shots left out of ALL my weapons. So, it sucked trying to backtrack to the sniper rifle immediately after.
@@TheZigzagman Another cool bit about that is that if you don't wait the full week and only a few days, Snake will have fallen asleep, and The End captures him and sets you back AAAALL the way to where you found Sokolov and fought the Ocelots, lol (Para-Medic expresses worry about saving in the middle of the fight for exactly this reason).
Also, if you save and exit once snake get captured in 3, then load it again later at some point, the game that boots isnt metal gear. Its some creepy hack and slash thing with weird fucking creatures or something. Freaked me the fuck out when I loaded into that at like 3 in the morning as a kid
Just rewatched and noticed you missed the bit about punching Meryl around the wolves. If you punch her she'll order the wolves to attack you, but if you quickly switch to a cardboard box a wolf pup pees on it, giving you wolf scent camoflauge.
Best storymode yet. I love Snakes super pragmatic down to earth voice "There sure are a lot of mysteries going on at once, I wish someone would tell me whats going on"
Just finished the video and this one is objectively the best storymode yet I seriously can’t wait for MGS2 storymode even it takes a decade. You guys do a great job telling such an awesomely complex story in an entertaining but also informative manner. I’ve been a fan of MGS since 2001, and your video told me things about it I had not known
The highest compliment I can make is saying watching this channel while folding washing, makes folding fun. You've just improved the life of me and my family to the value of 2 hours worth of clean clothes

Please continue doing more of these. You’re by far my favorite creator on RUclips and the effort and quality you put in your videos is top notch. Thank you for sharing this brother! I hope you had a great Christmas. This video made mine much better. Cherry on top! ❤
The psycho mantis fight is unparamountably one of the most unique boss fights in gaming history. From vibrating the controller, to reading your memory card not just the games you play but how you play them, to needing to change controller ports to be able to hit him. Kojima and his team somehow pulled off programming and mechanics with the playstation one that no one could have ever imagined possible and still haven't been pulled off again since
Yeah I looked it up because I played that as young lad who was very interested in womens nipples and I did not remember seeing them on her model. I still don't see it.
Did Internet Historian do that? or were there actual versions that censored her chest? I don't recall the boobies being censored at least in the NA game.
@@FUCK_________googIe there are many stealth capabilities we know nothing about. The only clues we have are military and civilian accounts depicting multiple instances of stealth bombers passing through and not being detected when logically, they should be visible and audible.
“Snake stop attack my life’s work!” I’ve watched this video about 10 times since I found out, and had it on in the background while I work even more times than that. I’m sure you probably don’t want to, but MGS2 Expleened would make my year!
When I played this game I was a kid and we couldn't always afford new games, but there was a rental place. You could rent videos, games and the like for a couple days. You didn't get given the original box, presumably so the place could flog the games after a year or so when people stopped renting the release for something newer. The cases were designed with the slips advertising the rental place but always kept in the same one with the name of the game on the shelf. So when you get to the part about Meryl's codec frequency I didn't know it. Instead I realised there could only be 200 frequencies, it took a second to call each one before you got a 'No Response' message so I just started at 140.00 and obviously it didn't take that long to get to 140.15. After that I took the paper out of the rental case and wrote 140.15 on the back and returned the game. It was still there months later on the shelf. You're welcome everyone.
LOL, I remember this being the part that HALTED the progress of MANY KIDS (including myself) who had rented the game from Blockbuster, so I ended up relying on the same tactic as the OP. Even funnier is once I ACTUALLY OWNED the game later on, I still didn’t realize the Colonel was referring to my ACTUAL REAL-WORLD GAME CASE so I ended up using the same tactic AGAIN to obtain Meryl’s frequency.
I had the same thing happen, my dad and I played the game until like 3am and got stuck without Meryl's codec number so we just went to Best Buy the next day and bought the game. Slick move from Kojima, easily sold more copies because of this.
34:50 I know its being played for a joke, but the actual reason Otacon thought Rex would be a purely defensive weapon was because he was told the railgun was meant to fire (presumably inert) projectiles to shoot down incoming missiles. They even go into a big schpiel about how Rex is extra dangerous due to it circumventing multiple anti nuclear weapons treaties due to it not actually using a missile at all, instead firing the warhead itself.
And more than the treaty circumvention is that its stealthiness gives it a strong First Strike capability, which fucks with the effectiveness of deterrence doctrine.
@@ToastyMozartgranin sure knew how to build something that was so pro-proliferation it extended through multiple generations of development as a feature of the metal gear type. Even the shagohod frequently violated even the concept of treaties.
Meanwhile the US nuclear policy IRL is "lol whatever we want, fuck your treaties". That thought just seems physically incomprehensible to most non Americans, but it's true.
Awesome video! One detail missed that I really enjoyed about Metal Gear Rex is that it's a stealth weapon. It fires only the nuclear warhead via the railgun like a projectile. It doesn't use fuel so it isn't considered a missile. This let's it get around international treaties. It keeps it from being detected by radar, can't be picked up by any ballistic missile detection systems, and makes it an invisible warhead impossible to intercept. If you don't know where the nuke comes from, it breaks nuclear deterrence.
What a delightful holiday gift. Many thanks for this one! The plot for these games have always went over my head, mostly because I was still young when I played these. Now that I'm a bit older not only have I developed a newfound appreciation as to how far ahead of the time these series was, but I've also gotten a better understanding of the messages that Kojima was trying to tell us back then (especially MGS2 - the ending of one is surprisingly relevant today).
MGS 2 was mind blowing experience. I loved snake eater as well. Even the newer titles weren’t bad on normal game standards, even if a bit worse on Kojima/MGS standards.
Was always partial to the Hind D fight myself.. was one of the few people who still had a mono TV when I first played it. Got to hear the oddly inspiring "There's more to being a good person than having a stereo TV" easter egg.
I love how the man explains stuff so enthusiastically, yet also so casually like a friend going off about his favourite game or movie, but with a script. It's the second time I'm watching this now and it sure won't be the last.
I rented this game on PS1 and Blockbuster used their own cases for the games, meaning I had to go through each number on the codec myself and I really appreciated that they didn't make you have to go very far to get to Meryl's signal. I imagine they thought of situations where people may not have the case.
That's an interesting story! Just a tidbit, in Japan, it's actually illegal to rent out video games. So a similar situation wouldn't have happened there. Maybe Kojima really did have his eye on the west.
I am thankful for all the holiday cheer...but I'm mostly thankful for IH and team making such an incredible expleened, and for IH and team providing all their older expleened videos in a convenient playlist! @@IHstorymode I actually looked forward to the ads in this one after the first one. Killed it lol. I want a sales job snapping ppls necks to sell nordvpn subscriptions
the point of the metal gear(explaining just for whoever still has some confusion): you can always launch nukes but you can identify where it's coming from and intercept, whatever you launch from a certain distance can be intercepted generally, expecially if it's a big missle, with a metal gear you got a single unit capable of passing mountainranges where not even tanks can go trough easily if at all, also jungles and sutch, it has enough weapons to delete any reasonaby agile group that can traverse the territories it goes trough, and with the railgun it can shoot nukes that can't be detected or intercepted at colossal ranges, then disappear, so you can create a perfect state of deterrence cause anyone who tries to prepare a nuke against you does so at the known risk of beeing deleted whitout notice
The problem with that is its a giant bipedal robot that no way in hell could have the power to fire what would be a intercontinental railgun. The other problem is ... well, only use for such weapon would be first strike that would still leave a lot of submarines with their payload intact, thats why both sides use then, to remove the notion of first strike to begin since retaliatory strikes would happen regardless, you really dont have to play the guessing game when you are the Soviet Union and nuclear kabooms start happening just like US would be pretty much down to a couple of choices, Soviet Union or China and they wouldnt exactly care if they were getting it wrong. Now if they lack intercontinental capabilities it gets worst because they would need to be deployed in NATO countries meaning they would be picked up being deployed as satellites exist, they would end up on a recon photo since those things arent small and this is before we go about their IR signature as those things would be running hot. The only scenarios were they would work would be using as walking tanks with a nuclear railgun that would be completely overkill or like submarines something that would carry retaliatory strikes but overall convoluted and very risky when a already better solution exists, submarines. And then we have TX-55 Metal Gear, now its only one that makes sense as it served as a deterrence from Outer Heaven being attacked as it would just nuke the attacking force, of course what exactly stopped then from nuking Other Heaven is not clear to me since none had intercontinental capabilities (no, railguns dont have that range) making everyone being safe unless you want to say the damn thing could get within lets say 200 miles from US or Russia all the way *from Africa* without being detected at all. Metal Gear really only worked in the scale of Outer Heaven nuclear deterrence. It was simply a case they couldnt invade Outer Heaven without their forces being nuked and nuking then would be difficult to explain, on the major leagues the US had no real use for Rex since it have a magical railgun with infinite range thats the real deal of the package and if you have one then it doesnt matter, I mean you think they would be able to sneak those into Europe ... EUROPE without anyone noticing? just look at a map of the Soviet Union and see how that could even reach anywhere without tripping into some village or that the Soviet wouldnt notice then walking around ... also first strike, I mean ... only reason to use Rex is NOT deterrence, its to destroy enemy launch capability prior to a strike (that wouldnt work because subs).
@@drakron i don't know how to tell you this... But i'm not Reading that mutch stuff Stealth nuke Can launch It at any time with no warning, perfect deterrence against evewryone Who doesn't have one, can also wipe out small armed forces and disappear cause mobility Further overthinking stuff Is Just useless

After finishing the game and saving Meryl you start a new game and I think you get a bandana which provides snake with unlimited ammo. You can also end the game by saving otocon rather than Meryl and you get another special item to equip when you start a new game. You also can get a tuxedo if you finish the game in a specific way. Not in my opinion, it was completely unique, and it defined the times to come - if this game wasn't made, I doubt this 'type' of game would have ever become a big thing Ahead of the curve, to me, means lots of people are working on it, but this game, imo, get the 'trendsetter' award, kinda like dark souls gets today
This video is reminding me of a webcomic someone made of the Foxhound unit, going into a lot of depth about their backgrounds, motivations, along with taking the piss out of the lore of the Metal Gear series and generally being pretty funny. The comic ended a LONG time ago, before MGS4: Guns of the Patriots came out, and I recommend it to anyone curious. It’s called “The Last Days of Foxhound”. One of the bits that never fails to make me chuckle is the relationship between Psycho Mantis and Ocelot. They’re both massive trolls to everyone and even bigger assholes to each other, it’s great.

Ocelot's line: "Just what I'd expect from someone with the same code as the boss" Is actually a reference to Snake having the same genetic code as Big Boss.
But he doesn't, Liquid's the one who has that and Ocelot already knows that. Almost certainly just supposed to refer to them sharing the "Snake" codename.
Okay, some bits that weren't brought up in the explanation (mostly to do with Liquid's motivations because god he monologues for ages):

*Revolver Ocelot is actually a double agent who is working directly for the President. The President actually being Solidus Snake, the secret third clone who has both dominant and recessive genes.
*Dominant and recessive genes pretty much just determine if a trait is inherited by your kids or if it skips a generation and have nothing to do with the actual quality of said genes. So if you have any knowledge of DNA Liquid just sounds like a total dipshit.
I was hoping someone would do this so we didn't have to. Also I didn't know all of these. Nice, Ty 👍

Was my favorite game in 1998. Few extra things:
5. after tank fight when before we go to hall with bodies killed by ninja snake needs to shoot down a generator with a remote nikita missile to turn off electric floor
6. in Psycho Mantis fight there's actually a sefeguard coded in. In case the user has broken port nr. 2 in the console and for some reason can't switch to it there's another way to make mantis vulnerable. When you're not switching for a long time campbell and naomi will call you several times and in the end tell you to shoot the marble statues in the room. When you do that he can't read your inputs from port nr1
What a nerd lol.
It's amazing how much they put into this game. Most games these days don't even go that far.

When I found out Psycho Mantis wouldn’t be able to read your mind if you plugged your controller into the player 2 port, it blew my childhood mind.
One of the coolest hidden game mechanics I’ve ever experienced.
My favorite is still waiting for a week until The End dies of old age.
@Lord_of_Dread so if you save and leave the game during your capture, you just get a completely different game?

I know its being played for a joke, but the actual reason Otacon thought Rex would be a purely defensive weapon was because he was told the railgun was meant to fire (presumably inert) projectiles to shoot down incoming missiles.
Ah I love well versed gamers ❤️ Hideo and I are proud

@@Zer0Blizzard $нvт тне fvск vр
Awesome video! One detail missed that I really enjoyed about Metal Gear Rex is that it's a stealth weapon. It fires only the nuclear warhead via the railgun like a projectile. It doesn't use fuel so it isn't considered a missile. This let's it get around international treaties. It keeps it from being detected by radar, can't be picked up by any ballistic missile detection systems, and makes it an invisible warhead impossible to intercept. If you don't know where the nuke comes from, it breaks nuclear deterrence.
Holy shit, ten years and I never figured that out. 💀💀💀

I rented this game on PS1 and Blockbuster used their own cases for the games, meaning I had to go through each number on the codec myself and I really appreciated that they didn't make you have to go very far to get to Meryl's signal. I imagine they thought of situations where people may not have the case.
My Blockbuster actually printed the frequency on their case.

the point of the metal gear(explaining just for whoever still has some confusion): you can always launch nukes but you can identify where it's coming from and intercept, whatever you launch from a certain distance can be intercepted generally, expecially if it's a big missle, with a metal gear you got a single unit capable of passing mountainranges where not even tanks can go trough easily if at all, also jungles and sutch, it has enough weapons to delete any reasonaby agile group that can traverse the territories it goes trough, and with the railgun it can shoot nukes that can't be detected or intercepted at colossal ranges, then disappear, so you can create a perfect state of deterrence cause anyone who tries to prepare a nuke against you does so at the known risk of beeing deleted whitout notice

The storytelling and the cutscenes in this game were so ahead of their time.
Probably the very first truly cinematic/narrative heavy game I ever played on console.
Not in my opinion, it was completely unique, and it defined the times to come - if this game wasn't made, I doubt this 'type' of game would have ever become a big thing
Ahead of the curve, to me, means lots of people are working on it, but this game, imo, get the 'trendsetter' award, kinda like dark souls gets today
I just watched this whole thing after avoiding it due to how long it is. Absolutely fantastic. Kudos to the editor(s). Well done yet again IH.
MGS1 probably had the most sensible plot in the entire series. If 1 is 2 hours long, the other ones have to be 4 each.
Meanwhile, the MSX games would be less than an hour, combined.
The Snake death cry after Mei Ling revealed she was using Starbucks Public Wifi made me die. Thank you.
Still one of the best webcomics ever. Not a high bar, but still. I still think of issue #92 weekly. Funniest thing I've ever seen.
@@RuleroftheSandcastle I got a lot of favorites too. #244 jumps into my head sometimes, ‘cause it’s the ULTIMATE form of trash talk for when someone really pisses you off, lol.
@@WorldsTallestLeprechaun Another amazing thing is the whole arc where Sniper Wolf goes off on one. The whole concept of the subconscious taking over because of the tranquilizer pills is so unique, and should absolutely be stolen by some other story.
27:45 as a terribly addicted chain smoker
this was the most realistic part of the game.
100% immersion achieved! 🚬
Are you kidding me.. he had a estimated 24-hour operation in front of him and he would have only swallowed one pack of cigarettes? Are you like for real.. can you imagine only having one pack, with no gas station access..?
Like don't get me wrong he's special forces and they got Jedi stuff going on but.. clearly he's not one of those Jedi's that can just pick it up and drop it at any moment cuz he utilized nanotechnology in order to get them in..
that being said, and I don't know if this is an actual feature in this particular one but I think it was in the second one.. probably more than enough cigarettes in an Alaskan base in the 90s hanging around to scrounge for.. so maybe that was the point was he just he needed one guarantee to get him started until he could find other cigarettes later.. that actually does make sense now that I think about it..
like as long as I've got at least half a pack I always can get to a gas station just in case.. so it's always nice to have a little bit of backups hidden around the house you know.
@@jakedill1304 Also, rations usually included cigarettes for a long time. And Snake can't run out. So it's likely that he just resupplied off corpses and ration packs, stuffing loosies into the pack he was carrying or wherever he keeps the guns.
@@PosthumanHeresy ah shit! this reminds me of the survival techniques you learn as an addict teen in the concrete jungle.
This game man. Completed it normally, did the bandana run, the stealth run, got the tuxedo snake skin, saw the alternate cyber ninja red and purple color scheme. Wow, what a game.
I'm so glad there were no twists after the credits, the story was so complex already
That part where Gray Fox gets his arm cut off and keeps running was incredibly cool. Reminds me of the opening cutscene from Psi Ops, where one of the soldiers gets in an explosion and he does this wicked twist front flip thing with an arm missing and continues firing his machine gun like nothing happened. That shit gave me chills as a kid.
Also, I'm so glad you put the old videos back, they were really good despite what you say, I and other story fans appreciate you putting them back up
Thanks! MGS was a big part of my youth!! This is bestb of both worlds!!
watched this twice, still don't understand how this leads to a stiletto-wearing ninja cyborg getting his ass beat by the universe's meatiest politician. thank you eternally for this content. much love
There's three more games before we get to that one, and they're all as dense and convoluted as this one. Actually, even moreso. It's... quite a journey.
Here's the explanation of how this leads to the femboy twink ninja cyborg fighting a colorado politician

Non-Kojima spinoff
@@Just_normal_youtube_channel nah, Kojima worked on MGR too. Hell, game almost didn't come out because the team he put in charge had trouble making the game and its mechanics. He thankfully got together with Platinum Games to help develop the game and bring to life Blade Mode a.k.a you can cut anything in any way to the game.
@@shadowrunner4620 He didn’t actually work on MGR. All he did was get Platinum to help out KJP.
If he was the one that worked on this game, it would’ve been about Gray Fox instead of Raiden, but due to not wanting to make yet another Metal Gear game, he left it up to the staff at KJP and Platinum.
MGSV Ground Zeros confirms he didn’t work on it in the Deja Vu mission, in which you have mark all of the Kojima made Metal Gear games. If you try to mark MGR, the game will tell you it’s “nothing special”.
Something I can listen to while wrapping presents and baking thumbprint Nutella cookies!? Merry Christmas!!
That Decoy Octopus bit at the end put me in a chokehold and kept mashing square. I literally had to fight for air I was laughing so hard
@1:52:09 "I thought you're gonna keep this one brief to be honest brother!"
I died 🤣🤣🤣
I love the way he says conference call
Hideo Kojima once said in an interview that he has a shrine to Jennifer Lawrence on his wall because he’s so thankful she invented video games and that he could learn from her example.
I heard she was the inspiration for Silent Hill as well. What a champion.
Honestly with that length I was almost expecting a quick rundown of the whole timeline. This was also nice.
Quick rundown of the whole timeline? In 2 hours? Try 2 days lol.
Some Metal Gear cutscenes are damn near 2 hours, you’d need days to explain the whole ass timeline.
Oh, man, Frog Detective is in Olds? That has to be one of my favorites out of Storymode hands-down. It's incredibly funny and the first thing I thought of when 'Snake stared at Otacon incredulously'. Also goes without saying but this one was amazing. What a brilliant end-of-year gift.
Frog detective is the best game
The word “genome” rearranging into “genome” finally got me lol. And then right after that the “look behind you” and he looks and it’s Liquid Snake with his hand like 👌 I LMAO’d my A right O
1:42:50 I love how IH starts gushing over this scene, no jokes he just loves it. Genuine childhood memories right here.
you know, i only just realized that Grey Fox's freakout after you fight him when saving otacon, was most likely just FOXDIE attacking him, and possibly killing him, but the treatment he underwent brought him back or otherwise saved him.
"billionaire explains extremely low stakes convoluted video game plot" is a great storytelling device.
You guys are masters of your craft.
The decoy octopus as Mrs. Doubtfire bit at the end absolutely killed me 😂❤
This is so much better than any let's-play could ever hope to be
You’ve never seen Tim Rogers before… holy fuck
indeed
I’m as excited for a 2 hour MGS Expleened video as I am worried about IH’s sanity as we watch him fall down/relapse into the MGS rabbit hole.
Merry Christmas, and thank you for this splendid gift!
I'm watching this video, trying to remember how each bit ties into the franchise storyline and am now also having a relapse in sanity.
All of your Psycho Mantis guesses at the end were spot on. Great video, would love if you finished the series, but I won't hold my breath
I enjoy this work for the third time now. Watched it once aware of the lighthearted handling, and this is the second time I relax by the calm vibes of this piece. Just wanted to say thank you to you, IH, and your team. You make tough times dank again
I remember getting the first part of MG1 on a demo disk from playstation magazine & replayed it over and over. Such a great game.
There's a secret on that demo disk that isn't in the main game. If you go into the base, then come out again and go back to the truck there will be a Nikita launcher instead of a Socom in the back. Still remember.
I've got an old ps1 copy that's pristine, and I bought it again on GoG when it came back to digital download
That's where I first played this game! Do you remember Metal Gear Solid Special Missions? It was like old school VR training? That game was cool af too. I played that one for months on end too.
The internet historian giving me a rundown of MGS lore is probably the greatest thing i never knew i wanted for Christmas.
Metal Gear Solid is certainly a contender for the best game ever made. I rented it back in the 90's and fired it up on my Playstation. I didn't have any memory cards at the time but I got so into the game that I stayed up through the entire night playing it and finished it in the morning when it had gotten light out. It was the greatest gaming experience I've ever had.
Even sweeter that the game ends at dawn
"YEEEES we are twins! BUT YOU ARE LUIGI!" best part of the video only second to "we have been drinking from the same cups and licking the same doorknobs" that was peak comedy as always internet historian and story mode narrators do it again, it must be painful to be so talented, so perfect! :d why perfection needs to be slow?! QwQ in a perfect world story mode and the main channels would be updated weekly with new peak comedy every week
I r
Grrdd
I can never expect a pattern on IH's video length. I just accept the chaotic personality and say "fuck it". Thank you Harold, you are good man
I'm glad you guys didn't get rid of the old videos. I love the frog detective episode, that's the one I showed my friends to get them into the channel.
2 hours! Sounds about right for even a parody summary of MGS. Thank you for your hard work!
I absolutely love your voice and sense of humor. I subbed!
You filled in the whole story in less time than it takes to watch a cutscene from any mgs game. Huge kudos lmao
My god. This was the best retelling of this story ever.
This will always be my favorite game. I went into it as a wee babby expecting some hardcore military shooter and discovered a love for convoluted stories, long cutscenes, cardboard boxes, and my kink for women in military uniforms. Happy holidays from South Korea!
"It truly was... a Metal Gear Solid." The classic line
Well my Xmas is now complete. Thank you storymode. Don’t ever stop being this awesome. Merry Christmas
What a masterpiece, so many memories. Thank you so much for expleening it! Happy holidays, much love
-Fox Island (Shadow Moses actually, but part of the Fox Archipelago)
-FOXHOUND
-FOXDIE
-Gray Fox
-Force Operation X (F.O.X.)
-Arctic fox (y'know, Alaska is arctic, has to be some foxes there)
-Solid "Fox" Snake
Everything is FOX.
Loved the video!
On 1:16:30 dialogue between snake and master, master asks “is this conversation secure”?
I was so confident you were going to talk about nordvpn haha
as much as you can poke fun at this game you gotta really sit back and marvel at the fact this game is probably the most well written, soundtracked, voice acted, and built game of its day. it BLEW my fucking mind as a child
"well written"
Ocelot's line:
"Just what I'd expect from someone with the same code as the boss"
Is actually a reference to Snake having the same genetic code as Big Boss.
But he doesn't, Liquid's the one who has that and Ocelot already knows that. Almost certainly just supposed to refer to them sharing the "Snake" codename.
