I've tried making the rug and ripped it out at least 3 times. I just cannot get what to do when I get to each end of a row. It never comes out right. Is there a sort of "rule of thumb" that I can keep in my head while doing it? I'm about to give up!
I watched the video twice, bought the supplies and today I built my rag rug loom! Mine is 20 x 40! I cannot wait to get my fabric strips torn! Thank you so much for the instructional video.
Oh my - I am so excited for you! I have supplies ready to start another one - I love making them!! Let me know if you have any questions! If you want, send me pictures of your progress diyonthehouse@gmail.com
Thank you very much for sharing! This video is short, to the point, and very well done. Clear enough for a weekend warrior to build a loom for his wife! 🙂
Fantastic! I have braided rag rugs, but they are labor intensive. I’ve wanted to have a frame to do this weaving , but found the cost of buying one was more than I could justify spending. After watching your video this AM (5:30 AM), I hopped in the car and drove to Home Depot where I found everything I needed and they even cut the wood to size for me. Can’t wait to put my frame together after my salsa verde finishing cooking! The tutorials for weaving the actual rugs are terrific; wonderfully paced with excellent demos and tips and tricks to make one successful! I can’t wait to raid my stash of already ripped and balled fabric (old sheets) and get going on this project. Great job!!
Ross, this is brilliant! The rods make a tremendous difference. Can't wait to build this. I currently use a frame that I made from an old picture frame and constantly fight the uneven edge. The rods will be a game changer. Thank you!
Looks like fun. He is very good at explaining the information for the directions. He keeps it simple, while providing the reasoning for why it is being done in this fashion. He is a good teacher.
I love that your workbench is cluttered with grimy, grungy old stuff and an ancient anvil. How delightfully real! Squeaky-clean, shiny professional tools and workbenches are intimidating.
Thank you for sharing. Wow what a fantastic video and so inspiring. Getting everything needed to make two sizes tomorrow, then let the fun begin. Debs from Down Under.
Thank you Ross & Tara, need to get supplies to make the loom, my Granddaughter already gave me her old but still looks New T-shirts, all dirt colors. Thank you!!
Thank you so much for the simple and easy to follow instructions. I have just made my loom from wood and nails from the second-hand store and I am super excited to get started on the weaving. I have been wanting to weave with recycled fabric scraps for so long and never really knew how to go about it, so I am super grateful for you making it so clear. Thanks and a big thumbs up, all the way from Hobart, Australia!
I just took a class with you - and when I looked up your video and channel I had already liked and subscribed! when I was looking for rug weaving - I like what you share! Glad to meet you!
Thanks so much! Just made mine today (1/5/25) after having all of the supplies for almost exactly one year. My Lowe's receipt shows 1/19/24. Lawd! I may or may not have procrastinated just a bit on this one. Also, I used an old frame from a mirror that I got at the thrift store.
I just finished making my own,1st ever loom! Despite a few teensy glitches, none of which were due to your instructions btw, I think I've built myself a very respectable, functional rag-rug loom ready for weaving! Thanks for a great video, and methods to create a truly unique rug. Time to start ripping rags I guess!!
Nice work! I hope you enjoy weaving rugs as much as I do!! I would love to see progress of your project if you want to email pictures diyonthehouse@gmail.com
So kind of you to share with us how to make the looms ourselves! I surely appreciate it and the idea of the rod to keep the rug strait is genius. Thank you so much!
I am hooked! I quite accidently stumbled onto your video tutorial and then showed hubby that he can make a loom for me. He did and I cannot stop looming. I've made 3 pot mats, he adopted another size to make table mats, made a loom for bathroom rugs and the bigger loom for floor rugs... I just can't stop. My family are tickled pink that I've fallen in love with looming... I've always been craftsy, but this is very relaxing, especially when you're in a rhythm... Thank you for sharing these videos... Xxx
Can you see my smile?!!! That is awesome!! I love it! I know exactly what you mean! I have two more started now for other videos -- one using t-shirts -- and one using twine! So glad you are having fun with them! Did you see our video on joining the rugs together -- GREAT way to make a floor runner!
Ross, this looks fantastic! Can't wait to get the loom made and start on a rug for my new bathroom! Thank you so much for a great video, clear concise and professional quality.
Wow, I found your site by accident and I can’t tell you how pleased I am. I was recently talking about making some rag rugs for our bathroom. I know it would have been a failure. But NOW I,m equally sure we going to make a perfect loom and my winter nights will be occupied profitably Thank you SO much. BTW, I’m in New Zealand and we’re about to go down to level two in our fight against C19
New Zealand! Fantastic! I just finished making a rug yesterday out of a plush blanket that made a super soft and thick rug -- that would also be great for a bathroom. I should get the video up next week! Stay safe and healthy!
WOW ~ THANK YOU SO MUCH ~ THE PRICES TO BUY A READY MADE FRAME ARE VERY EXPENSIVE AND NOT ONLY THAT MOST WILL NOT SHIP TO UK 🇬🇧 ~ NOW I CAN MAKE MY OWN !!
I have just made one. Easy to make and only cost me £24 for 2 frames. one is 39" by 23" and the other one is 27" square. I reclaimed to wood but £24 was for brackets, nails, screws and metal rods. Well worth the effort. Thank you so much for providing this tutorial. :)
How wonderful to have a helping husband! Thank you for your video. I had made a huge loom with what made sense to me..back in the day. Made 1 rug. The fabric had so many strings I was disappointed an never made another rug. My loom is like yours but I never knew about the side rods. My rug turned out great tho. I'll be adding the rods. Thank you!
Yay!! I am excited for you. I really enjoyed the tshirt rug I made, no strings! Little messy on the balls of knit that fell off, but loved it. Here is that video in case you wanted to try ruclips.net/video/6KJ6_Zmux-I/видео.html
Your weaving video popped up on my RUclips feed. Whooohooo! My lucky day. I have a small loom, but I would love to make bigger projects. I love how simple and easy joining the strips of material is. I'm showing my husband this video now!
Thank you both so much. Explain in an easy to understand lesson. I will share my 1st rug. Again, to BOTH of you thank you very much. Planning on giving as great gifts as well. 🎉🎉🎉
I thank you so much for your directions on how to make a loom! I would have never been able to try this without your generosity and directions! I am so grateful!
Thank you so much for sharing. I am so happy to have found you. This is the first video of yours I came across. Had been always wanted to learn to make a loom.
Excellent Tutorials Kara & Ross! I've watched both of your tutorials on this project and feel confident that I can tackle making BOTH the Loom and the Rag Rug. I was delighted when I noticed Kara wearing an "IOWA HAWKEYES" shirt in a portion of her looming tutorial! It's so nice to meet fellow Hawkeyes via RUclips! I live in the Des Moines area now, but grew up in Davenport, IA. Thanks so much for both tutorials. My grandmother, who lived in Allamakee County in N.E. Iowa, made a huge variety of different types of rugs from scrap fabric when I was a little kid and I've been wanting to make own for a long time. You guys have given me the exact type of instructions and tips to finally do it! Have a blessed day! Christy
WOW!! Fantastic! Yes - we love Iowa! I originally grew up in Grimes, west side of Des Moines. Ross grew up near Pella in Sully, Iowa. I hope you enjoy making the rugs as much as we do! I have a video set to post next week on how to weave using crochet thread -- it made an adorable table runner! Let me know how your project goes!
This loom looks like so much fun that I went out and bought the materials I need but didn’t get the inside angle braces. Thank you so much for sharing this
Great how-to video. Now I need to go see if I have some 1x3s in my basement! Creating a purpose-built loom for rag rug weaving seems so much simpler than trying to warp up my rigid heddle loom.
Nice! If the metal rod is thread it would be just as easy to put a thick nut on the top and bottom of the rods to keep them from falling out. Nuts will aslo allow the rods to be cut more evenly with the loom or have more length at the top and not stick out past the bottom of the loom with rods longer than the loom.
Im a quilter and former fabric store owner:) I know what I'm doing with all my leftover fabrics:) as soon as hubby makes my frame. Thank You, grandchildren will also enjoy this.
What a lovely couple you two are...and you create the best videos..very clear, quick, and all around awesome! Can't wait to try what you two have created!

I’m looking for crafts I can do on the road as a grey nomad (van dweller) in Australia. This looks perfect, charity shops can supply the fabric as required. At the end of my trip I will have rugs for my van, new home and gifts.
Thank you for the tutorial on building the loom . Made my first one... started it on Friday and finished today... took longer as I didn’t get enough nails and had to go back to the store!!!! Now let’s see if I can actually make a good and usable rug!
Picked up supplies to make my loom today 😃 I purchased a Suspension rod for the rods. It’s 5mm diameter (which is a little bigger than the 3/16in but not by much) it came in a massive (3.6meter is that 12 foot?!) length but can be cut with bolt cutters (by the nice man who works there so you can fit it in your car, if your lucky😉) it’s galvanised and used in suspended ceilings. Cost me $3.99 at Bunnings. Just thought I’d share because it took me ages to figure out what kind of rod to look for lol.
I finished my rug today! I made it pretty big and did a few other craft projects in between. Thanks for the great video. I used all my babies clothes she’s outgrown and it’s going to be a wall hanging.
Thank you for showing us this. I prefer maker videos without music. So don't know how other people feel or if you really like the music but I don't think it's necessary when your content is so helpful. I really appreciate the instructions on how to do this!!

Thank you so much father, I am making according to you weaving loom much much bigger than me :D I know it is gonna work. It is nice you are doing things together
@@DIYOnTheHouse My husband picked me up the hardware over the weekend. So I was able to build the loom. Have a box of a variety of bedding, recently brought out of storage.. Now if my grandson will cooperate.. we may have a rug by the end of the week. 🙂

You could also use wood stretcher bars that are used for frames, canvases, no cutting and you could buy stretcher bars the size you want.
That is a great suggestion! Thanks!

My husband picked me up the hardware over the weekend. So I was able to build the loom.
Have a box of a variety of bedding, recently brought out of storage..
Now if my grandson will cooperate.. we may have a rug by the end of the week. 🙂
