I caught the last show of the Mer De Noms tour and it was in a small arena in Dallas TX. Small arena considering it was Maynard but it was a phenomenal show
@eggstu I saw them open for Nine Inch Nails in 2000, April 20th, to be exact. They were great, not as good as NIN that night but good in their own way.
I love how "the Hollow" feels like the guitar notes are dancing around you. Such a beautiful melody in it. It could symbolize how filling in our emptiness feels gratifying and makes you feel alive; in the moment (like how the guitar sounds).
One of the best ways I heard someone break down Maynards 3 bands: Tool is the brain/intelligence A Perfect Circle is the heart/emotion Puscifer is the sex organs/libido
The fact that you "needed" to hear the hollow again feeds right into the nymphomaniac undertones of the song. What a perfect reaction. Lol. Maynard, you genius!
If you ask me, Magdalena is A Perfect Circle’s best song. So much packed into 3 minutes. And the way it feeds into “Rose” on the album is absolutely gorgeous. The entire album is a masterpiece.
I don't think I could name a best song from them (although all the best songs are on that debut album IMO). Front to back, that album is rock solid. Orestes, 3 Libras, Breña, the list goes on. Very moving all through.
the solo is a fking orgasm that comes fully charged with emotion and when it leaves you end up empty but satisfied, my fav song from any maynard works, truly. Billy nailed every single song, bass was on point, not sure if played by paz or white, but the bass is from another world... i think drums were played by freese and let me tell you, that drum was criminal, i loved it. Damn, such an amazing album :3
yaaaaay!!!! the hollow and magdalena are two of my favorite APC songs! im looking forward to seeing this!! i stopped watching a movie as soon as you popped up!
Yeah I understand totally why you needed to hear it again....Tool lays out the atmosphere for you get locked in for the ride....A Perfect Circle hits you real quick without you being able to connect...especially if you haven't done this band to understand their style yet.Great reaction!
Very excited to watch this with you, Magdalena is in my top 3 A Perfect Circle songs, not many reactions to it on the web :) Nice to see you feel these songs :) Thank you.
Oooooh. I'm happy for this. I have gotten to really love this band. Its different enough but fresh at same time . Now then , you two are the best. I appreciate how you are trying to go about this to get the lost out of it. LOVE to you guys
So glad you finished Salival. Enjoyed it very much. Mandalena is one of my favorite songs from A Perfect Circle, Judith being the other. Very excited for your reaction to Lateralus. Keep up the good work.
Very excited for The Patient. You will also, probably, really like Orestes. There’s a very poor audio quality, but great version of Orestes by Amy Lee from Evanescence.
In my personal opinion, I've always put all 3 of Maynard's bands in their own unique category. "Tool" is a progressive journey throughout each song, with complex rhythms and deep, thought provoking lyrics that want you to push past the boundaries of our own expectations on an intellectual level. "A Perfect Circle" is a more melodic journey, with each song written like lyrical poetry that helps evoke a more emotional discovery within ourselves. "Puscifer" is a more artistic journey, with creative expressions where each song doesn't take itself so seriously, and is meant to give you more of an entertaining experience with each listen. Hence, the Male, Female, and Artistic sides of Maynard that are shown within each band. But, of course everyone may have varying opinions, this is just my personal take on each band. Also, you both have become my favorite channel to watch, and I wish I didn't have to wait a week to see each video, but it is always a welcomed surprise each Saturday. I just wanted you both to know that you do excellent work and thank you so much for putting in so much time and effort to make each video a pleasant experience. See you next week and have a great weekend!
I think: The Hollow is about the hollow in us, that we always try to fill, in fact, it's actually all we ever do, and it is mostly, maybe always sexual. Magdalena is about worshipping beauty, wanting to give everything just to be close for a second, because nothing is worth more anyway. Throwing your dollars before the alter, meaning the.. ehem, female part. It's like Van Gogh cutting off his ear, or the mothers basement dwelling gamer "simping" on OnlyFans. I always felt that TOOL and APC is about realizing that beauty is all that ever really matters. Our suffering as we reach for the divine
I just had a revelation .. the hollow is about the endless black hole need for validation that a person with a personality disorder has .. and if I'm not wrong I think Maynard was molested as a child
Fun to watch you start a deeper dive into APC! Glad to hear you'll digest the whole Mer de Noms album after Lateralus. I think Maynard expressing his more "feminine" side (which perhaps he partly meant as his more openly vulnerable and emotional side?) is more obvious on songs such as 3 Libras and Brena. Brena at the end of the album is a love letter to his fiance at the time. Brena lyrics = "vulnerable, but it's alright, I'm opening to heal". The Hollow I think is talking about the type of person who attempts to fill a feeling of emptiness inside themselves through sex, in an unhealthy way that hurts others in the process. Yet they are always left feeling empty = hollow. Perhaps he acted this way himself at times in his life, who knows? Lateralus next week - enjoy the ride :) Listening to that full album song-by-song is the way to go. Tool is amazing!!!
Opening the Pandora’s 📦 of Maynard’s artistic journey is a different path than TOOL’s evolution. Lateralus will be your North Star. “Wear the Grudge like a 👑... calculate what you will and will not tolerate.”
When you do Lateralus, please keep in mind that there are songs that.... go together. For instance, if you play parabol and save parabola for the following week, it may drive some people (namely me) insane. You’ll find more like that when you get to 10,000 days.
Initum PUSCIFER is releasing a new album October 30th. "Existential Reckoning." Please check this band out. You won't be disappointed. Maynard's Harmonies with Carina Round are amazing. ✌
A Perfect Circle's first two albums are great start to finish. I was in my early 20s when they came out (and got to see them live in 2004 as well here in NZ), so gravitate towards those more than their later albums. While I understand your dismay at the "short" song length, I think they are exactly as they need to be. Listening to them in the context of the full album may bring up your overall feeling towards the songs? I guess after being so attuned to lengthier Tool songs will take a moment to acclimatise 😉
If you like this version of the Hollow, you will love the version from their live at Red Rocks album called Stone and Echo, especially if you listen to Weak and Powerless with it together which comes before it on the album. SO SO GOOD
Honestly anything from Stone and Echo is so much more than the album and is as good as it gets, except maybe Three Libras which is a remix. But Orestes and By and Down are just divine on that album
Please react to all APC tracks chronologically like you are doing with Tool??!! We would all love to see that! I have been a HUGE Tool fan for over 22 years
Magdalena is my very fav aPC song. Thomas is a close 2nd, I think. The sound of aPC is a very pleasant fragrance that enters my nose and pleases me greatly. You should hear The Doomed by aPC. It's Maynard's beatitudes for bad ppl
To me Tool songs are about self introspection and delving into the meanings, whereas APC songs are meant to be enjoyed emotionally. Exactly how you described. I'm really enjoying your reactions. Both of you. Keep rocking.
Great video. I'm glad you liked them! I'm my opinion: The Hollow is about addictive nature (I think this about most APC songs though). Sex, drugs, love... anything that, when gone, leaves you feeling hollow. "..feed me here. Fill me up, again. Temporarily pacifying." This song sets up the rest of this album so good. Even though not all of Mer de Noms is about addiction. Magdalena is about only one of those addictive tendencies, but a lot more specific. Strip clubs or a particular stripper lady; spending money for that minor relief of lust. Not only that, (the character) is addicted to the one woman that he calls his "black Madonna" so much that her stage is his alter to Her... his "lovely goddess".
Grand Canyon by Puscifer , Maynard says it’s if favorite vocal track from any of his bands. Also do the official video if there is one . Images of the Grand Canyon during this song is spiritual at the very least.
You guys should check out Lucid Planet. They just released a new single and about to drop a new album. They're from Australia, they're 100% independent. They remind me of a mix of Tool and Karnivool.
Session drummer Josh freese on drums. Played with Smashing Pumpkins, A Perfect Circle, NIN, and many more. James Iha on guitar from The Smashing Pumkins. Paz on Bass. She is a great bassist. Then Billy and Maynard.
Listen to the Hollow or any of my fav Perfect circle mp in a XL tractor unit and I swear it is seriously f.. kng Incredible. . ps I see the Hollow got to you to
It’s interesting to hear the different interpretations. To me the song musically expressed desperation to escape a current state of mind. And lyrically it expressed someone who in my view was using sex as an escape mechanism and as a way to temporarily numb the pain of their existence. Specifically it seems as though Maynard is singing about a woman he knew/was in a relationship with who was indiscriminately using sex as an escape from their otherwise empty and depressing life.
Hollow references Maynards permescuity at the time and his want to settle down. Lol. This is great. You were expecting so much more TOOL and APC are just not. Mostly sexual in nature as TOOL is more cerebral. Definitely good though. Amd awesome in concert. This is Billys project. He about begged Maynard to be a part.
If you ever get to "three libras" and "thinking of you" two of their best songs off mer de noms theres a great live petformance here doing both ruclips.net/video/dZb0Wu8nySw/видео.html
Tool is more of Maynard's left brain being analytical whereas APC is more right brain garnering his emotional side. Psych majors will cringe as both sides are used sometimes at the same time etc. but just trying to simplify it for them.
Magdalena, as I interpret it, is Maynard’s experience with a stripper that he knew. Or a woman that was financially dependent on Maynard, and he was okay with this for a period of his life until he realized that she was sucking the life out of him in trade for meeting his physical desires
The mer de noms being sea of names points me in the direction of thinking that each song on the album is about a person who had an impact in the band, or Maynard’s, life.
To me "the hollow" seems to be about consumerism, filling the hollow (artificially created by advertising or not). The fact that advertising mostly uses sexuality to lure the consumer into buying a product could also be interpreted in this song.
Just a huge suggestion: only compare TooL to TooL and Perfect Circle to Perfect Circle. Two very different Bands, messages, time signatures, tones, etc.. Even different rabbit holes IMHO.
The 90s called, we want our music back. So you sit around and listen to music, and people watch you? Why? Do you know something about Maynard that the rest of us don't?
in case u do not know “and it does not really matter”.. but... most REAL Tool fans have ZERO respect for a perfect circle... because we know the truth, apc would not exist or made it as a band if Tool had not been in court.. Tool was sued by their record label and Tool counter sued.. for 8 years Tool was not allowed to make any music.. during that time maynard founded apc because Tool could not make music... Tool won the court case finally in 2017 and thats when they made fear innoculum.. apc was basically done then because Tool is maynards real band.... just a tidbit of info for u... lol
This is almost entirely false... APC was conceived in '99 by Billy Howerdel. He initially wanted another singer (Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins) but she was unavailable. MJK was brought on as the alternate option, but has been there since that beginning (APC did not do anything before adding MJK). The only 2 static members of APC are Howerdel and Keenan and they both have been present on every APC record. Apart from the earlier albums, APC went back into activity in 2017 for the album Eat the Elephant (released in 2018) and toured to support it extensively (which obviously included MJK). So MJK did not, in fact, ditch APC for Tool in 2017. When asked in June of 2018 about future work for APC, Keenan answered "Yeah, there should be". MJK seems to be able to do things for Tool and APC (as well as Puscifer) sometimes at the same time (Tool and APC even toured together with MJK performing double duties). All of this info is readily available on the wiki for APC. As far as the court cases and Tool goes - the label's case against Tool was finished in '98 (before the forming of APC). The case that gave MJK the free time to help Howerdel with APC was due to Tool's former manager they fired. He was only away from Tool for about a year. Again, all of this is available on Tool's wiki page. What isn't in the wiki is that Tool was sued in 2007 by a friend of Adam Jones for artwork. The insurance company that was supposedly defending Tool ended up suing Tool themselaves and Tool countersued. That is what you may have been talking about (not the label though). This certainly caused a delay in Fear Innoculum sure, but this absolutely did NOT push MJK into APC. APC was already popular by that time and had 3 well received albums by that time. You almost seem to blame APC for stealing MJK away from Tool. Why can't you like both bands (because they are actually both pretty awesome in their own right). It's this elitist attitude that puts people off on "real fans" or worse; the bands they like. Real fans like what they like and if they don't like another band it's because they don't like the sound - not because they share the same singer that was free to do what he/she wants.
I remember when Mer de noms dropped out. ‘Twas fun times waiting for Lateralus.
I remember as well
I caught the last show of the Mer De Noms tour and it was in a small arena in Dallas TX. Small arena considering it was Maynard but it was a phenomenal show
That's about when I bought the DVD version of Salival, and saw them live for the first time, a couple of months later.

Puscifer - Id
A Perfect Circle - Ego

A no true Scotsman fallacy. What an asshole!
