  • As the world grows increasingly reliant on technology, the threat associated with an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) attack continues to grow. EMPs are massive bursts of electromagnetic energy that can be produced by nuclear detonations (as well as through some non-nuclear means). These pulses can disrupt, damage, or even destroy electronic systems, thrusting the target area back into the Dark Ages.

    The thing is, using an EMP of any magnitude against the US would be treated the same as sinking a carrier. Pretty much a declaration of war against the United States. Any adversary thinking about doing that has ask themselves, "Do I feel lucky?"

      Any emp large enough to do any damage would be a literal nuke. Nukes themselves are the most powerful emp humans can make

      Yeah, a nuke would be treated as...a nuke. So the same reason Russia's nuclear torpedo is a stupid super villain weapon: its a nuke and its going to be treated as a nuke.

      Flux compression generator bombs are non-nuclear. Their effects are far smaller than that of a nuke, but whose to say an adversary uses just one, and depending on where they're set off, they could have very serious effects on the power grid. And would be treated as an existential threat and an act of war.

      As I said,
      Nuclear electricity proliferation to stop CO2 proliferation also means national transmission grid proliferation.
      The existing national electric grid is fragile because it is extremely, extremely expensive.
      Never overbuilt because enough to do the job was expensive.
      No fossil fuels means 5fold bigger electric demand and 5times bigger capacity national electrical grid capacity.
      Now you say EMP vulnerable is a consideration 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮

      I wouldn't worry about it. If anyone detonated a nuclear device above mainland USA there would be a swarm of ICBMs heading in the opposite direction, followed by a response. At which point your electricity supply, and the USAF for that matter, aren't really going to figure in anyone's list of serious concerns.

      @@osric1730 Back during the days of the Cuban Missile Crisis, in my childhood and after, that would be a reasonable statement. In modern times, with our missile defense systems, enough of us will survive the actual detonations to be a serious problem.

    There's a giant wooden platform near Sandia National Labs where mostly aircraft systems were tested against EMP. It had a couple of Marx generators that could create the largest EMP in the world (without nukes, that is). It was almost entirely made of wood, using a lot of glue and even wooden bolts as to not mess with test measurements. And you could put a MTOW B-52 on it.

      I was on an inspection visit to SNL with regards to preparations for a light initiated high explosive test of the Peacekeeper Stage IV test article to simulate a high altitude nuclear effect. We passed by those wooden trestle platforms on the way to the test site. They were indeed big enough to accommodate a B-52. We also visited an EMP test site that was configured to expose an entire Peacekeeper ICBM missile stack to simulated EMP. I expect that the next generation ICBMs (the Sentinel?) will be tested there too.

    There used to be a number of white papers and web sites online about EMP generators and defense.
    They all pretty much disappeared after 9/11 along with a number of sites that could be used for malicious (along with innocent) purposes.

    Fortunately, our SSBNs on patrol are immune to EMP and will give any enemy foolish enough to attack in that way much more than a bad day.

      Yep we have so many assets spread out over such a large area it would be literally impossible for them to disable them all, that doesn’t even consider the hardened assets we have. They’d get turned to glass

    Pretty much all aircraft avionics and mission-critical electronics are hardened to specifications precisely using test data from our past nuclear tests. As are most military-grade electronics that are mission-critical as well.
    Civilian infrastructure... on the other hand, would be entirely fucked.
    Edit: If you don’t think EMP’s are a serious threat, read another message I sent to a commenter about EMP:
    A pulse of anywhere from 5 to 10 kV/m (thousand Volts / Meter) will start to reliably damage electronics. 2-3 times that and it can break down PN junctions or gate oxide insulating layers in diodes & transistors, causing localized melting and pretty much permanently destroying anything with a transistor-based chip inside it that is not behind 10+ feet of concrete or behind a serious chunk of steel, which is not most of our houses. I’d say the fact EMP is indeed a line of sight phenomena doesn’t really make a difference because most if not all civilian power infrastructure, IXes (internet exchange points), GPS satellites, utilize such transistor technology & are above ground and are not shielded to handle up to 50 kV/m like military equipment is. Just because most of the power grid is reinforced for lightning, doesn’t mean the electronics in charge of operating the grid are likewise…
    The main component of a nuclear EMP is called the Compton effect. It’s essentially where gamma rays from the detonation strike air molecules & release electrons, which are then deflected by the Earth’s magnetic field, creating a widespread electromagnetic force. The Russians and specifically the Chinese have researched a new form of nuclear weapon aimed at explicitly maximizing gamma radiation. The theoretical potential EMP field of these is on the order of *200,000 kV/m* ( Source: apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/AD1097009.pdf ).
    Example 1: Take a look at the Starfish Prime test. 1.5 megaton hydrogen bomb at a much higher altitude than would be used. It was detonated over Hawaii & produced about 5 kV/m. Didn’t do too much. However, due to the stronger relative magnetic field over the US, it would have produced 20-30 kV/m.
    Example 2: The Soviet project K nuclear tests. They were 300 kiloton warheads detonated over another high magnetic field area, with a 350 mile section of telephone line separated by repeaters using fuses and overvoltage protectors every 50 miles. The test blew every fuse and over-voltage protector.
    These were bombs made in the 1950’s & 60’s. Nevertheless something tailor-made by an adversary to maximize resultant gamma radiation. And, sadly, I have a correction to make:
    China has made public statements, in writing, that they actually already have such weapons and would consider them in the case of a conflict with Taiwan ( Source: apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/AD1102202.pdf ). I’d be willing to bet most people reading this didn’t know such a fact. If you read this source, the author also states it is a possibility for China to hide a HEMP nuclear device inside a satellite which is frankly way more scary than any other possibility.
    Given a M.I.R.V. like Russia’s R-36 with 10 independent warheads yielding ~750 kilotons and (in China’s case) optimized to maximize gamma radiation and detonate at the right altitude, a modern EMP attack _would be very nasty_

    My career involves quite a bit of physics. It’s not my job to do anything directly involving nuclear weaponry, but I know electronics and their design well. The underlying physics drives a lot of my interest in this topic and it’s something I’ve followed for years.

      I mean it would certainly suck, but people really overestimate the power of EMPs you really need line of sight to cause damage to most things and a lot of infrastructure is obscured. Some cars could be taken out but others might continue working depending on how their electronics are positioned. Overhead power lines would get blasted but they frequently get struck by lightning anyways and have precautions in place. Underground power lines would likely be unaffected. Would it cause billions in damages? for sure, but probably less than a hurricane but more than tornado.

      @@outatime626 He kinda tackled this point though, a country like North Korea doesn’t have the missiles to overwhelm the missile defense system so instead of performing a full scale nuclear attack they might detonate their weapons before interception at altitude creating a large area EMP, with little blast damage.

      Russia already disabled one of our warships a few years ago. A couple of Fulcrums (IIRC) did a hostile flyover and the ships systems went cold. You don't need a powerful EMP if it is real close! And since no kinetics were involved you can't go hot! And you can't go hot with a cold pickle.

      FYI I think there is only one whole house surge protector that would work fast enough and at the right freqs. I don't think they're that expensive though. Fair warning, I think almost all solar panels and windmills would be hosed. They might be able to get hydro going in a few months though.

    Im retired now but about 15 yrs ago or so i worked on a project at whitesands missle range or wsmr. And we built a structure dedicated to emp pulse testing. It is a 4 story all metal building 1/4" plate steel all welded . Inside of a 5 story building. Its called the EMVAF building or electro magnetic vunurability assesment facility. Inside the center building it has a huge rotary platform so they can bombard our militery equipment from all angles with emp pulses. This building being a huge faraday cage of sort allows for testing without interfering outside interests.
    Being a person with a pacemaker that is responsible for over 80% of my heart beats im surely fucked as would be many others in my situation . The lights for me would go out within srconds of an emp pulse😊

      Yeah this. The research I did on the subject back in the day made it sound bad for civilian infrastructure but basically just for stuff plugged into the grid since the EMP needed power lines to serve as antennas, but I'm no expert and maybe I misunderstood.

      @@j.f.fisher5318, a guy posted some sources above that are more than worth a read, with a combined cyber attack even a small EMP would utterly devastate us. I've read most of the EMP Commission's reports, and they're pretty terrifying when you realize how little prepared we truly are.

    I would say NO AS an Electronic Countermeasures Maintenance Instructor back in the 80s We had pretty much broken the code on that problem. Aircraft, missiles, radios and such had pretty much 100 percent built in protection.

      @@jansonvocmf Solar flares are a regular occurrence that follow an 11 year cycle. Occasionally the flares cause disruption in HF radio communications and not much else. The earth's magnetic field protects the planet from solar flares, no intervention from the military has been necessary for the last 4.50 billion years. I think we're OK.

    EMP may not affect USAF aircraft, but it would certainly affect operations on the ground side due to massive power grid failures. How critical that would be...idk. But if off the shelf systems are in use, they will not be protected--at all.

      I'm pretty sure all of our military installations have emergency backup generators for exactly that scenario, keeping them fueled up would be a challenge but hardly an insurmountable one.

    The real trick with EMPs is not the shielded boxes stuff gets put in rather the penetrations to that box for things like power and data. How to design those interfaces is what's classified and TS as far as I know.

    In addition to some aircraft being hardened against EMP's, our aircraft are also distributed at various bases around the world and it is a significant number. Hawaii, South Korea, Japan, Guam, the UK, NATO, and the Middle East just to name the major bases. Also there are the aircraft carriers that are deployed at any one time. On top of that, the US is participating in aircraft deployments and exercises around the world that would also survive.
    Like roaches, you can't wipe them all out.

    Yes and no. Some military gear in use would survive due to the design of it. Most are shielded to a degree. However, there's also a good supply of backups under heavy shielding that will definitely survive. Would take a bit to be sure the EMP threat was over, then get them out and replace the ruined ones. So yes, it might ground the USAF for a bit, or in part, but not permanently.

      If the US power grid went down, having planes that were shielded wouldn't matter. There would be no more production of anything in the US, nor funding, nor really even a functioning state left.
      Kill the electricity to a city and see how long people last with no water, sewer, medical care, food, transportation, communications, etc.

    The genius David Adar... Warned about emp over 50 years ago. Also, as far as I know he created the fastest rocket engine even known today. I think it was over 30 or maybe even 40 Mach. Do a search for his name. Blessings everyone😊

    Good news that much of the nation's defense assets have some level of protection. Bad news for the civilian sector as there has been little or no effort to protect the nation's power grid. The Lexington Institute estimated a cost in 2020 of about 50 billion dollars to protect the nations electrical grid from EMP/CME events. That is less than $100 per person in the USA. The estimated cost to replace the entire electrical grid after an attack was about 5 Trillion dollars! That might not even be possible since an estimated 90% of the population of the USA wouldn't be around after a year following such an event.

    Additionally, the US military assets are dispersed over a large area. An EMP from a nuclear detonation would not take out bombers or fighters in Europe, Diego Garcia, Alaska, Japan, Hawaii, and the Middle East. Even more, launching a nuclear missile in the direction of the United States would be seen as an act of war and nuclear retaliation from at least the land based and sea based leg of the nuclear arsenal would be eminent and a nuclear strike from bombers highly likely. You’d have to launch multiple nukes to even have a shot at successfully enacting an EMP attack because one or two nukes would surely get intercepted.

      Put a nuclear warhead in a "communications" satellite as a secondary payload. Let it do it's thing in orbit for years or decades. It is there if it is ever needed.
      I'd be surprised if there aren't satellites in orbit right now like that.

      except it is fairly easy to calculate the weight of a satellite based on its design and how it maneuvers in orbit. it is impractical since it would take months for a satellite to deorbit with its limited fuel on board, meaning that the space force would be super likely to shoot it down before it re-entered the atmosphere since they would know very accurately where it would fall since orbital periods don't lie and you can't hide it. @@Kriss_L

    I remember hearing that the most vulnerable part of our grid when it comes to EMP attacks is very large and costly transformers at power stations that would be destroyed all at once with no spares on hand and no way to replace them all quickly.
    That said, I don't think aircraft are the most vulnerable, as they are made to withstand lightning strikes too. _Bird_ strikes, on the other hand......
    I would like to see plans to harden / repair the grid should a large EMP occur, but I bet those plans do exist already and that they are classified. This is too big a hole to imagine it not being addressed in the background.
    Imagine if there were an autonomous AI army.... and an EMP hit it. We aren't as vulnerable as we will be a decade or two from now.

      A plan to harden the grid is only effective if it is completed before an EMP (or CME). And it takes 1 - 2 years right now to replace larger transformers, and they are basically custom built so there is no shielded warehouse with any spares.

    Definitely I watch videos in this as a kid during the '80s about nuclear attacks and EMP bombs taking out all power even cars didn't work on scenarios and that's before everything had microchips on it so if you want to avoid that by a car made before 1970🤫 our country's been ready for an EMP attack since before computers were available to the public it all comes down to have a backup wind up generator at least for a radio and communication find out what's going on if you are lucky enough to get away and stay the hell away from cities Prime targets always have them take out the majority of the people to take out further recruitment military bases we have plenty of them 750 to 800 in the US and around the world plus the entire ocean and now space so there's no way to take us out completely without getting Payback thank you for your video

    As a retired government employee once told me after I inquired about an EMP, it’s good practice to keep a 70’s era type vehicle with a spare ignition system in an enclosure that is faraday cage type. That way after an EMP you can ride around and make fun of fancy cars that will not function. That is, till you exhaust your fuel supply. Because you are probably not getting a resupply anytime soon.
    The man had an odd sense of humor.

    US civilian infrastructure will be hardened in future, not specifically for enemy EMP but for what are known as CMEs, or coronal mass ejections. The other type of event to be concerned about is a Miyake event, which is right now unclear where they could originate from. Might have been an Anton Petrov video that spoke about the hardening of US civilian grid? Anyways, CMEs and Miyake events can be far more powerful than even the strongest EMP humans can produce, because… the sun and space. We’ve managed to avoid disaster for the majority of the time since we began using electrical appliances, but eventually it *will* occur where the earth is directly in line for a massive CME or extrasolar radiation blast. Depending on what part of the earth is facing the sun at that time of a CME, could be interesting. A big enough Miyake event would pooch basically all electronics and electric grids on earth, nobody would likely be spared. Look up Miyake event on Wikipedia. Not sure what humans can do to avoid being completely knocked on our asses by such an event, but we should definitely plan for it.

    For the peppers out there, most of what you're doing won't survive a nuclear blast. May not even survive a Carrington event. Things like ammo cans are very imperfect faraday cages because there isn't electrical connectivity between the lid and can due to the paint. So you get lots of leakage. Your better off buying a galvanized trash can and putting stuff in there.

      Lots of misinformation about EMP shielding. Scrape the paint off for a good connection, and layers are your friend. Put a small can into a bigger can, in a bigger can. Make sure each can is insulated from the others.

    There is a reason for the Soviets and the initial Russian decision to keep using valve radios/radars in their aircraft as these are far more likely to survive an EMP , they only switched to modern micro-electronics due to needing high resolution radars to even attempt to locate/track western stealth jets/missiles

    The effectiveness of an EMP is directly related to the length of conductor, whether a trace on a PCB or wire, the longer it is the more energy it will collect from said EMP
    This is the reason Hawaii had issues during the Starfish Prime tests, miles long telecommunications lines etc etc

    I don't know how hardened the current cellphone/internet systems are to EMP, but the old Bell telephone system was designed to operate in case of nuclear war. That included buildings like 33 Thomas Street in New York, concrete no windows. The most vulnerable part of the cellphone system is likely the cellphones themselves.

    “A really bad day” could, in theory, wipe out the electronics in all nearby military and civilian assets if the blast was big enough, but the hardening that has been done by the military should have some beneficial impact by reducing the effective radius of the blast.
    My biggest concern with an EMP attack is the impact to civilian assets that the military uses or benefits from. Things like air traffic control, logistics equipment that may be leased or rented out to the military on a short term basis, and obviously anything that affects agriculture production. After all, if you can’t feed your army, you don’t have an army!

    Something you should analyze is camouflage. The Ukraine war with drone use is demonstrating the failure of camouflage. People and equipment are obvious to drone operators. Most camouflage netting I see is the wrong color and often rigged like a tent. A nice rectangle that's different from anything near by. And obvious bunkers and foxholes. I spent a few years in Vietnam where camouflage usually wasn't needed. But I'd feel naked as a Russian soldier in Ukraine.

    Planes, radios and general equipment would work. Our bases even have backup power and fuel but only enough for so long.
    Basically if we get hit by an EMP the civilian sector will de decimated but the military can still function on borrowed time, although not indefinitely without the support from civilian resources.

    Anyone contemplating such a move would be like someone watching a video about krav maga and then going down to a bar outside a Marine base and starting a fight with someone to see how effective it is. They have some data, but no real world experience, and this would be a terrible way to acquire additional data and experience. That first move might work if circumstances are perfect, but then what? It's a suicidal opening move, but recent experience does make it unwise to rule out a spectacular, but suicidal, attack as a strategy.

    One thing I've always wondered about an EMP, If one were to go off and lets say you had 2 identical computers, not shielded in any way against EMP.
    But 1 of the computers was switched on, and the other one was switched off, unplugged and battery removed from the motherboard. Both computers are then exposed to the EMP. Would both computers be rendered useless or would the fully powered down computer survive? You plug it back in, replace the mobo battery and switch it on, would this computer still be operable?
    Just a thought, if there are any electronics experts out there, I would love to hear what you think about this one. Thankyou in advance 😀😀

      an EMP uses any cables or connections as antennas since it is so powerful, it doesn't matter at all if it had power or not since the EMP provides a huge burst of power to the devices which is what destroys unshielded electronics.
