People always talk about the German big cats being awesome, when in reality the StuG was a far more important vehicle. It was cheap, reliable, had good firepower, good mobility and it was versatile. It could be used as an assault gun, tank hunter, for ambushes, as mobile PAK gun, and as an infantry support vehicle.

I recall watching a documentary on Stalingrad and every time the German vets being interviewed mentioned the Stug, their eyes teared up. One even went so far as to say Stugs saved their lives more time than he could count.
Fun fact: the stug was not part of the armoured corp but rather part of artillery.
Amazing vehicle that gave birth to the tank hunter class.

Great video and thanks for sharing this, absolutely clear footage and it really shows how important the Stug was to the troops. I would like to recommend a great book about a Anti -Tank Commander Hans Hoeller of the 21st Panzer Div.D-Day Tank Hunter, its a great read for any avid history reader's out there. Also Das Reich by James Lucas, this covers the story of the 2nd SS Div and has some great combat with Stugs and shows the how they being greatly outnumbered held their own. Great video and thanks again, take care regards Scott.

🤘 Agreed, "D - Day Tank Hunter" is an interesting read and one of the latest WWII memoirs from a surviving German soldier looking to heal & pay homage to his comrades. From combat in N. Africa to commanding an anti-tank platoon in northern France ( sheds light on another armored self propelled gun, the little known modified French Somua MCG half track w/ 75mm Pak 40 gun), getting thru the Falaise Pocket, surviving capture, and the end of the war, he shares his honest thoughts & experiences.

The original StuG III Ausf A-E mounted a short 7.5cmL/24 for infantry support, built from 1940. However the 7.5cm KwK.40 could not be mounted in a turret that would fit the Panzer III hull, so the improved StuG III Ausf Fwas born in September 1942. Mounting the gun in a similar armored casemate, which allowed the tanks to remain in front line service until the end of the war. It was often substituted for Panzer IV tanks in the Panzer Divisions frontal armour increasing to correspond with the later Panzer IVs.

Nice footage. My old eyes see more detail on 1/2-speed:
4:06 Oversized winter tread. Bent edge (also 5:53).
3:28 With modern drones, how this move-to-contact will be more tense (closed hatch, eyes up, spread)?
    3:55 Defilade ranging.
4:36 Skirts a la 'Road Warrior'. Saw similar in OIF 2004, before 'kit' arrival.
    4:48 Cycle in that ice-mud.
    5:46 Punched holes.
9:27 Excels in 'crouch' (low silhouette, foliage biased right for left-slit driver).
10:24 Line formation ambushed from left(?).
    12:45 *!@$ beyond recognition.

A really formidable armored vehicle. The Sfug lll with its added armor, low profile and the tank killing gun made this turretless tank very dangerous to those unlucky to be in the firing line of this vehicle on the battle field. I believe this is one of many positive things to come out of that rather dark time in German history. I really admire and respect the engineering that went into building this assault gun but I guess in this case a tank destroyer.

Does anyone know how they painted the Stugs and other armor white because I figured white paint was hard to come by on the Eastern Front during that winter. I was just wondering cause they would have needed a lot of white paint to paint armor, aircraft, guns, etc.

    • @Dalesmanable
      @Dalesmanable 6 месяцев назад +5

Although white paint, sometimes with a touch of blue, was applied in workshops, the vast majority of vehicles had whitewash, not paint, applied in the field using buckets, brushes, mops and whatever was close at hand. In spring whatever whitewash that was left was removed by scrubbing with water.

Some interesting footage for sure, but the title is not entirely accurate when it says "late". Many of the examples shown are F/8s and even many of the Gs are early models with bolted frontal armour and older rear idler. There are later models close to the end, with zimmerit, saukopf mantlets and added concrete armour, but I think I saw only one example with the hole for the coaxial M.G. in the mantlet.
