It makes me reflect upon the concept of statehood and sovereignty versus other solutions that could be taken to reach the same end. I don't know how it would impact the trajectory of a religion with nearly 2 billion followers and so many different sects, but maybe it will be something easy for non-Muslims to look at to understand that the religion and its followers are quite diverse in their beliefs and practices, and encourage more inter-faith dialogue.

I’m not at all a fan of the entrenched hardline Sunni and Shia institutions in SA or Iran, nor the discrimination that Alevi-Bektashis face, but government trying to establish religion is just as bad as religion establishing government IMO.

If they recognize God and believe in God and follow God's path by doing good deeds in this world, they are Muslim by definition. I would argue they are more Muslim that half of the Arab population that is promoting violence and extremism that isn't even backed up by the Qur'an or the hadith, but is rather rooted in backward patriarchal practices of the Arab peninsula dating from pre-Islamic cultures.
