2:41 Hot take: tamiyo's not dead, her little rat son is gonna use some bs moonfolk tech to revive her next time we go to kamigawa. Death has meant so so little so I'm calling it now.
You're right you really can't build a deck with what you got. A few stand out pulls would cut the cost on a few of the meta modern decks. Modern is a format that needs 4 copies of certain cards to be meta so you're really never going to build a deck out of what you get from a box. You kinda just have to order singles.
You also opened zero rare fetch lands somehow, which makes it even harder. Like my sealed pool at prerelease had 2-3 rare fetches. But yeah, half (or more) of the cost of some modern decks is just the mana base. Although if you opened a LotR bundle you would get 1/4 the other half of the cost of a modern because The One Ring is in almost all modern decks rn.
I honestly think using the old brown for colorless cards would of been preferable. While it is true it fits better within modern visual design it's not actually what was used back then and thus faux retro. It's especially crude because Karn had cards before the design change that used the old brown and as such it especially makes sense for him to have a brown frame.
9:01 so I get to be a little pedantic here, the legends you mentioned in legends were only made common in masters edition 3, this is what makes them legal in pauper. This means the only other legends printed at common in paper are the 2 mono red creatures in homelands, Chandler and Joven. This does mean the fun fact that in paper the only common legends are all mono red. Once again homelands is forgotten (probably as it should be)
About the weird inclusions of reference cards, I think they're really nice. I bought a bundle and even though I don't need them to play, it still makes it easier for me (as someone who knows the basic rules to play) to introduce magic to new players so they can have a piece to remind them throughout a game while I sit back and counterspell them.
Oh yeah, I have nothing against them. Just in a £85 bundle seems a bit weird. I'm not sure how many new players would be picking this product up, you know?
It feels like Modern Horizons 3 was mostly meant to push new staples and strategies into the game, not encapsulate entire decks worth of cards into one set. I don't think you would ever have gotten a 100% ready-to-play serious Modern deck out of a bundle like that. The best cards you got were Phlage, Creation of Avacyn, Galvanic Discharge, and Strix Serenade IMO (and two of those are because of commander the way I see things). What I like about Magic, even to this day, is that most of the time cards just *work*. Even if it's not super optimal, you can build a deck with what you have and play it. That's more than can be said about Yugioh (which I do love, but it hurts opening a box and not having the mandatory 3-of secret rare that the whole archetype depends on). Try building a pair of two-color decks with the cards you have. You'll see my point. They won't be super clean or make any coherent sense, but the cards will still do their jobs and you'll probably still have fun.
Oh that's interesting. I hadn't considered part of why they didn't make precons was because there wasn't really a decks worth of cards in the set. I suppose you'd need a bunch more reprints to pull that off. Very interesting perspective, thank you for sharing
@@RedBobcatGames Of course! I absolutely wish they had made precons like they did for Pioneer though. They wouldn't ever be good, I know that for a fact, but they'd at least demonstrate how to build and play Modern.
@@RedBobcatGames in my opinion, there is no real reason they couldn't have made modern precons for this set. The only thing that makes it hard to make a modern precon in wizards eyes is that in order to effectively encapsulate the power level of modern they would need to reprint many cards that haven't been reprinted in forever and drop the price of many ultra powerful staples or price the shit out of those precons. They however completely ignore the lower power level of modern jank because they feel like there isn't enough of an audience wanting low power modern decks.
@@RedBobcatGames Mark Rosewater With regards to why Modern precons weren't printed: "As for making pre-constructed decks for Modern, there are some huge challenges. I think of all those cards, the only ones that currently see play in Modern are Galvanic Recharge as basically Unholy Heat's replacement, Marionette Apprentice in Yawgmoth (It's only downside compared to Zulaport Cutthroat/Blood Artist is that you can't combo kill your opponent if they have more life than you when you try to go for the combo since Yawgmoth's ability costs a life, but making a 1/1 on a ping when a creature dies effect is so good in that deck), Meltdown is a sideboard card sometimes (Though it's not as impactful as it is in Vintage especially where 0/1 mana artifacts reign supreme), Springheart Nantuko and Sylvan Safekeeper are good in Nadu for both being an easy combo enabler and keeping your combo safe respectively. Phlage is a nice card for aggressive Boros decks. Other than that and then Bolt yourself to untap lands with spells on the front (even then, the Bridge one is so bad on the frontside it's probably not viable), the rest are kind of "Well, they might see play in Pauper" or just "Well, that was certainly a card that will be played in draft". There might be more though since I don't play too much modern but I like to follow the meta and those are the ones that I know of from that collection that would.

@@RedBobcatGames Yeah, Modern decks basically require that you have all the fetches for the lands you have, the shock lands, and so on, unless you're in mono-red burn (And even then, burn usually wants them so it can splash white). That's why they all cost like 1000 USD. The most effective thing you could probably make using the set list of MH3 (Including Draft special Guests) for Modern is like Green Eldrazi Ramp/Tron, since all you really need is Tron if you're doing Tron + Ancient Stirrings + Expedition Map and the Eldrazi like Devourer of Destiny are strong enough. Main reason for this is that the only non-dual Temple lands it needs are the occassional Blast Zone or Ghost Quarter.
