  • The Shelbyville Police Department is one of several Kentucky law enforcement agencies among hundreds across the country testing a new de-escalation device.
Byrna HD (Home Defense), a legal, non-lethal self-defense weapon looks like a pistol. It holds and fires five .68 caliber hard kinetic rounds or chemical irritant rounds, like pepper spray and tear gas, using CO2 and is designed to burst on impact.
“It also gives us more reaction time,” said Gentry. “If someone were to come at us with certain objects like a knife or a bat, it gives us another option besides a Taser.”
Unlike pepper spray or Tasers, the Byrna provides a shooting distance of up to 60 feet.

It is available... For California residents it requires a online self defense training course certification. Which is a 20 hour online course with test at the end. They give you 60 days to pass the test once course is completed and you can retake the test as many times as needed during that period.
The certification comes in two levels.. basic to allow use by regular civilian and the more qualified level for areas such as guard card certification.

Was just down there looking for possible homesteads. Stayed at Ft Knox for a couple of days while we drove around. Looking to be south of Louisville but north of ETown. Moving away from the cold in SE Michigan but wanting to keep at least 3.5 seasons. Grew up in Barren County though so very familiar with small-town/KY life 🙂. It's great to see small cities taking the lead dealing with today's threats w/o having to take a life. Back in my LE days, the CS and pepper balls would have been much better during shipboard operations. What people also seem to overlook is the collateral damage a stray FMJ bullet can cause. I was thinking of getting one of these for home use but in Michigan, you can't get the kit that has all 3 types of balls. Thought of having it shipped to family in KY but decided to wait for a few more months. Cheers

Giving police to many options/tools in the tool chest can actually put them in more danger as it takes longer for them to consider the appropriate use of force for the situation at hand. I'd say ditch the Taser's and replace them with these as they has the same result but with a greater engagement distance as well as follow up shots where as most Tasers have a single shot cartridge.

@@bobtoo9870 This product is what it is, I have many guns, from traditional firearms black powder, to big bore PCP air rifles. So I don’t have dog in this fight, either you see need for none lethal options or you don’t.
I’m simply pushing back on the statement of it being a child’s toy and not affective. Now you could argue that the product would be better if it were more powerful with with a bigger magazine capacity and I would say fair argument.
It looks like a real gun which is a deterrent in itself, it hurts on impact and the chemicals will shut things down up to 60 ft. My wife isn’t comfortable with a traditional firearm and she carries my Byrna when she views properties. It’s better than nothing.
Now what I don’t like about these chemical launchers is that at a close distance you can be affected too.

@@jhill6033 its simply a terrible less lethal option, thus why you haven't seen it proliferate.
paint ball guns are children's toys, and CZ balls are rather weak. Don't believe me? order some. I've had the unfortunate experience of being hit with pepper balls during occupy wall street hoedown.
and as a gun owner, you should know less lethal only really applies to the police. You could still cop use of deadly force charges using this as a citizen.

@@bobtoo9870 it’s not a paint gun marker that’s not the intent or the reason for existence. I explained to you that I own one and I’m satisfied with it. I don’t want to be hit with practice rounds nor do I personally want anything to do with the chemical rounds. They have other brands that have a few more rounds, a bit more powerful. So go that route if you feel that you need more power or just carry your firearm?
These debates tend to go round and round because the point is easily lost. So do you just feel that less than lethal devices are just waste of time period and if not what do you feel is affective in the less than lethal arsenals?
