Very excellent video/tutorial for intermediate drummers or great for a beginner when settings are set to 50 percent tempo. Liked and subbed. Thanks, Mike Barnes, for the effort to get it correct.
Mike you must be the happiest, fun loving easy going teacher on the planet, I bet your students can't wait for their next lesson. Thanks to teachers like you music and especially drums are safe in your hands..... Thank you 👍👏

Originally played on a vintage sonor kit that is beech shells , only a 13 by 8 Tom and 16 by 14 floor tom. The key is definitely not to tense up because then you lose it, I don't believe in trying to count at speed, just hum the main guitar riff and your accents should automatically match up with the song. The counting works in practice at home solo for sure but go out the window in a jam /band session/rehearsal/gig situation.
I started playing this back in the 60's before I ever took lessons. Although the original pattern is is good, it can be so much more fun and sound better (and easier) by adding paradiddles and throwing in accents on the bass drum.
Know it’s not QUITE the same on the e-kit (back to the studio and the acoustic soon!), but tons of fun to play and an all-time classic, instantly recognizable drum beat! Played by Ron Wilson. Wipe out is a great track to play but as a Sandy Nelson fan drums for drummers is the one I'm trying to get my head around. You should give it a bash. If you dare.
This!!!! I am just discovering the work of Sandy Nelson and am stunned by the sheer musicality of his work. Just yesterday I was listening to the entire 12 minute Drums for Drummers Only track and was awestruck at how he kept the high hat marking out the song for the entire duration. Teen Beat and others have just a great lyrical movement to them that I find captivating. I seriously hate the word underrated but he really was. Shame about his motorbike accident that took part of his leg as he would have been a standout studio man for at least the balance of the sixties. I would do anything to see a decent transcription of these songs.
Another great video Mike. I know you said there is no one solution to a faster single stroke roll.... But can you show a close up of how you use your fingers to flick the stick back up or bounce it back as you describe.... Been playing for 30 years and still haven't got it...... Aaaaagh 😖
It's like bouncing a ball! The tip of your stick is a basketball that you throw down and it rebounds off the head. The rest is repetition in your improvement zone IMO (ruclips.net/video/h765abWe_us/видео.html) - . But yes will do more videos on those things!

Enjoyable as ever, Mike. But there is speculation producer Charles Bud Dant tweaked the speed of drummer Ron Wilson's playing on the original. I wish someone would ramp up mine! Ever looking for the shortest distance between two points, lol!
Really? Well I actually gave the wrong tempo in this video - it's in the 160-169 bpm range. Should be well within range for the drummer with a few solid years of practice under their belt I reckon! Keep going man! And thanks for watching :)
Hi Aldele, P R A C T I C E! Consistency over time man, chisel it out of stone! Reading a great book at the moment that mentions actor Steve Martin when he decided to take up bluegrass banjo. As a man who deeply understood how learning physical skills works at that point, he promised to himself that he'd stick with it for at least 40 years. This was on the premise that you don't see many people who have done something for 40 years who aren't experts at it! Keep going - consistency over time and stick to that practice plan :) Cheers Adele
I mean you *could* do that, I'd definitely play singles. Here's The Safaris playing it live: ruclips.net/video/oFCt17HzHiI/видео.html (drum intro at 1:00) - there it's single stroke roll all the way too. Don't confuse it with "Peggy Sue" by Buddy Holly, which was played on the original with a paradiddle sticking by Jerry Allison: fb.watch/izjoKCpUiv/
@@evanpoole7829 Beach Boys and Fat Boys did make a version that got to No2 in the UK in 1987. However, the original by Surfaris, as Mike lists, was co-incidentally a No2 in January, 1963.
I have never impressed my dad with nothing. Yall, I need help. Drumming is in our soul. Then he said not to come to him with it until I can play a tool song. I'm still trying to figure out how to hold these sticks so they don't keep hitting each other. It was all fun and games playing easy stuff like we will rock you and beliver and enemy by one of my favs imagine dragon. But speed right now is not going . I've been playing dreams at the .75 speed at to slow the video. The only thing I do have going for me is for the first time ever I can read the music for the drums which blew my mind I had mo clue 😂 i just wanted to learn to cover for my churchs drummer he is going to jerusalem later this year. Now im im a mission to impress my daddy

Isn't the slow version of that tom and kick part basically Apache?

Thanks for watching - exactly as you say man, left foot keeping time :)
Mike - How do you keep that left hand so controlled?
