i think i know what's happening here
since in the beta storyline, we are the neighbor's son, who abused us, this might be linked to the neighbor being abused himself by his parents (our grandparents) as a child, which led to him abusing us as a kid.
also in the hn wiki, it says that according to the cancelled ending for beta 3, the basement is just a small closet in our childhood home, and we are seen walking towards the church, likely visiting our father (the neighbor)'s grave.
