- Hi there and welcome to my latest video.
I hope you enjoy looking through some of my recent plein air sketches from this summer 2023. We will visit coastal locations in Cornwall as well as landscapes that are quieter and off the beaten track.
I use a variety of media in my sketchbooks. These outdoor sketches are very important to my painting practice - giving me ideas and training my eye to see. They are also incredibly good fun!
Like the video? Why not buy me a coffee?

Thanks for sharing your lovely sketches, makes me want to go out and do more👏👏👏😎💥
Thank you for watching 😃
Very inspiring. Of course the real reason I'm watching is Basil.😀
Happy to hear that - Basil will be pleased
Hi Andrew ... thank you for posting your summer sketching adventures! ... i have to say my favorites are the ones done with charcoal, graphite and pigmented blocks ... really like the black and white ones because they look like finished drawings the composition and values are really good! ... nice seeing Basil romping about having fun
Thank you Nancy
I find black and white very atmospheric. Don’t have to carry much either which is nice when it’s hot.
Bye for now
I like the watercolour impressionistic sketches most.
Thank you very much
It was a great summer, Andrew. Great work!
Glad you enjoyed it Bob
Always enjoy your sketchbook reviews
Thank you Colin
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you
Your sketchbooks 🙌🏼 Your drawings and paintings are so loose! Love them! I still need to find in my the freedom to be loose in my paintings like you are. This is what I aspire to
Thank you so much Hanna 😀
It takes time to build up the confidence to be looser and bolder but I'm sure you will succeed
Very enjoyable! Thank you❤
Glad you enjoyed it Cindy
Hi Andrew, Madeleine and Basil ! ✨✨✨
One more time, a great and enjoying video. Sincerely it was the best moment of "my" Sunday. How beautiful is this Cornwall seaside there ! What a nice beach and colours in wet sand, sea and sky ! Your smiles in the rain as a sunshine and the Basil beach running ears blown to the wind 😄✨. Finally it's time to speak about your sketchbooks. I should have a look to the new one, I don't know this brand with this attractive paper. I still love the way you go with charcoal and graphite and I am also always impressed by your nervous, dynamic strokes with oil pastels ! Maybe you are the wildest painter of UK 😄 ! 👏✨✨
Hi Jasmine
Thank you so much 😊
I love working in all weathers and trying new media. Madeleine is now at university so I’m on my own for a while 😃

My best wishes to Madeleine 🙏
Love this video, you had a great sketchbook summer x
Thank you. The weather was very varied which made for good sketching
This is an interesting way to do plein air landscapes and I like what you’ve done. Really interesting way to sketch a scene. No real detail, but the idea comes through to the point one’s mind can see the scene.
Thank you very much. I like sketching - it is fun and a chance to experiment and play
I love the energy your sketches have.
Thank you so much 😊
A great set of sketches that capture the last few months here in Cornwall. Always a pleasure to see your work. Thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for watching
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💫
Thank you 😊
Thanks for sharing your sketchbooks with us Andrew. Your prolific sketching is an inspiration and something I don`t do enough of! Nice to see Basil too!
My pleasure Steve and thank you very much for watching
Hi Andrew, sehr schöne & lebendige Aquarell Studien mit grosser leidenschaftlicher Farbigkeit, geben sehr gut die Lebendigkeit dieser Küsten- Landschaft wieder....
Viele Grüße Douglas
Thank you very much Douglas. Always appreciate your thoughtful comments 😃
I love your sketches Andrew, always inspirational.
Thank you so much Anita
Basil!! Hi cutie! Beautiful sketches.
Hello Barbara 😊
Thank you
Nice work.
Thanks so much
I love the impressionistic, less controlled, watercolour sketches Andrew… you are very adept at conveying the essence of the scene with such loose simple washes. Inspirational as always… just what I need as I prepare for my annual painting/sketching week with fellow Caradoc Artists, starting 29th September. Mick.
Thank you so much Mick 😀
Hope you have a great painting trip
I love how simple and expressive your sketches are. Not at all to compare our skill levels, but looking at your sketch books makes me feel like it's okay to look at my own and see messy, unrendered landscapes. Sometimes it feels like my sketchbook belongs in the trash because its a lot of swatches and sketches that feel too simple to be "art"
Sketchbooks are great for experimenting and exploring different ways of working. They are also great fun and it’s really nice to look through them years later, it takes you right back to that moment
Do you use graphite and ir charcoal with watercolour?
I use graphite usually as charcoal can lift the damp paper
Basil's enjoying himself, how old is he Andrew?
He loves it. He’s 13 now 😃
Est il,possible de venir avec de la couleur sur les graphites sticks ?
I’m not sure if the graphite sticks come in colour. Maybe water soluble versions by some manufacturer?
Merci
