  • Energy: A National Issue is a 1977 animated educational television special starring Fred and Wilma Flintstone, narrated by Charlton Heston and produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. It was broadcast in syndication on various local and regional channels between April 17 and November 22, 1977 as a presentation of The Center for Strategic and International Studies, Georgetown University.

      Although the Flintstones were before my time I became a fan of Henry Corden since he voiced Loudrock in Season 5.

      @@ChristopherSobieniak All the cartoons like Rikki Rikki Tavi, White Seal, The Cricket in Times Square, Bugs Bunny in King Arthur's Court, Duck Dodgers and the return of the 24th and half century, the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie, Bugs Bunny Bustin Out All Over, made all of Chuck Jones later cartoons in the 70s and 80s so mature and grown up because of Dean Elliott's music.

    “It’s difficult to remain objective when the charge is rape” is not a line I expected to hear in an educational film starring The Flintstones.

      I wouldn't doubt Warner Bros/AT&T may still have this in their archive somewhere. Just one of those ephemeral sort of things nobody ever thinks to appreciate anymore.

    I guess this was the last animated production of Alan Reed as Fred Flintstone before his death, and also, one of the few H-B cartoons which weren't musically scored by Hoyt Curtin.

      The music is by Dean Elliott, who was best known in animation for his work with Chuck Jones, DePatie-Freleng and Ruby Spears.

      @@TimL2005 Corden ALWAYS made Fred's singing voice, even in the original Flintstones' series. And also took the role after Alan Reed's deah in 1977, if I'm not mistaken.

      Yeah it is interesting how different a setting they chose for Fred and Wilma to live in. Barney gets namedropped but that's it.

      It's attention to detail on energy would probably bore the average user and it's dated information might seem laughable if it hadn't already happened by now.

    Interesting depiction of the Flintstones.
    They live in isolation in a cave, and it has a almost apocalyptic ending, what with all the trees and food sources being gone.
    Really charming special though, thanks for sharing it.

      They were at least trying to give us a message about energy and showing the problems associated with different types of energy available at the time. I suppose it leaves us with more questions than answers but at least it's a good start for discussion.

      Probably helped to put Fred and Wilma in a setting more closer to what prehistoric man once lived in than what their usual TV series had. Fred's interest in the "Catgut-on-a-stick spear thrower" (bow and arrow) certainly feels more close to what might've came out at that time.

    Aside from Georgetown University having funded this production, I did wonder what this "al Dir'iyyah Institute of Geneva, Switzerland" was. Unless they changed their name or went out of business, they don't see to have much net presence other than for documents pertaining to solar energy. I guess they were big proponents for that.

    Venezuela being ( or was ) the biggest oil producer of the world and now most countries are not buying them because they burned all their oil and other countries found other energy sources
    Gotta say, this dilema is still present, and the countries who believed just in oil are dying ( Venezuela again )

      @Famulator It is a bit, it was also on the reel backwards for who knows why, I had to unspool the thing and then put it back the right way! I only wish I had film rewinds to work with but I don't!
