    I still have mine. I could never bring myself to toss it. My oldest son used it all the time and sadly he passed away in 2008 when he was 18. I can still picture him AOL chat messaging like a madman, either hitting on the girls or making plans with the guys....

      yes, I have a 500mhz model of this machine which looks great .. from the front, sadly I am the reason the back however is butchered, a horrible dremel job when trying to get a standard power supply to fit the opening... it worked, but... yeah, don't do what I did... still a solid machine..

    My .02 cents as the original owner of one! That very CD burner was in fact an original build to order option, I had it as a second drive along with the 40X CD-ROM. I can also happily add that at 20 years old, It's still alive and well and living at my parent's house with XP, it's basically used as a print server for an even older parallel HP LaserJet at this point, but fully functional no less with the original EV700 17" CRT. They most certainly don't build them like they used to. One of these days I'll replace it with a parallel external JetDirect and steal my system back to add to my collection.

      This is from memory, but it was my very first new computer and as an IT guy, these things are special! Gateway Performance 600, 128MB RAM (I believe you could order up to 256 but it was big $$$), 20GB Hard Drive that I'd like to say was 7200RPM, Nvidia RIVA TNT2 with 32MB, the sound card I'm not sure but I think it was the turtle beach shown here with the digital audio out for the accompanying digital Boston 2.1 speakers, 40x CD-ROM, I want to say it was a 4x4x24 CD-burner whose brand is escaping me (but I'd love to know!), and a floppy drive. The only things I wished it had at the time were a Zip drive (although moot with a CD-Burner unless you had existing media) and a DVD drive. I don't recall if this was just slightly before DVD in a PCs time or if the option just wasn't worth the cost.

    I think that's the one I had, after my first Gateway. We had the 17" CRT and the Boston speakers, that I used for a decade of computers. They were the best, but the signal would go out and barely pop back in when adjusting the knob on the back of the bass. I played my PlayStation games on it for higher quality. The last Gateway I bought before they went bankrupt or w/e was a BTX tower.

    Computers were built like tanks back in the day. Today their made with cheap, low quality parts. What a shame.

    • @that_one_av57
      @that_one_av57 4 года назад

      Low quality parts? Are you telling me a I9 2080ti DDR4 32Gb 4080Ghz RAM machine is low quality? These things had a gig of 250Ghz RAM if you paid triple. I think the term you're looking for is "delicate", and these computers were just as-if not more-delicate as the modern standard.

    The first computer I ever used was one of these Gateway "essential" PCs. It was the mini tower version though like the one shown in the ad before the video. It also had the Ev700 CRT monitor. I haven't been able to find the same one, but I did find the full size tower like the one in your video. Pretty much the same system I have always liked the slotted CPUs such as the Pentium ii and the early Pentium iii like this. I also have that mouse somewhere. I love that old style Microsoft intellimouse. I still use one on my main PC, although it is the plain Microsoft version, not one with the Gateway logo on it.

    So I live in Fremont so not too far from you! I was surprised to find out that you lived so close in Omaha. So I have a Gateway P3 450 in this same case with very similar components to yours from July of 1999. It was flooded in March of 2019 but I recently managed to clean the motherboard in the sink with water and dawn dish soap then let it dry with a box fan. It still works just fine now just need to track down optical and floppy drives now and figure out how to install Windows 98 SE on it as well. The HDD died as well but I replaced it with an SDHC to IDE adapter. Mine has an Nvidia Geforce2 MX 400 64MB vram in it from 2001. I may also upgrade the cpu to a 600MHz P3 since it's pretty cheap to do so. Thanks for the video.

    Am I the only one to notice the seek test from the HDD in the intro computer is ... An old Western digital Caviar, the seek test made these distinctive noise, they were made from 1 gb to 3.2 gb then the seek test went different. This is by far my favorite sounding HDD seek test 😅 I must be autistic to some degree for sure.
