  • We had always wanted to enjoy "afternoon tea" at the elegant Ritz Paris Hotel, in Paris. And, having already done all of the typical touristy things on our past visits to Paris, we decided it was time to go to The Ritz Paris, for "tea". This video is all about our visit. It should be noted that the luxurious Ritz in Paris is not part of the well known Ritz Carlton chain. They are different companies and unassociated.

    The Proust salon is called after Marcel Proust. The Madeleine in milk at the very beginning is a tribute to a famous scene in one of his novels.

      Yes, however, when I contacted them, month before, I confirmed we wanted the "savory" Tea service. When we arrived, the server apologized and told us that Chef was only doing a " sweet tea service" that day. He was not offering tea sandwiches, with the level of tea service, we opted for, either in the Salon Proust or outside. Our only option, that day, was a tea service with a coup of champagne or no champagne and the "sweets" presentation or nothing. We opted to go ahead with their only available tea service. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! 😊

    Great video. There is a difference between high tean and an afternoon tea. One serves sandwiches... :)

    • @postcardsfrommygoldenyears
      @postcardsfrommygoldenyears  2 года назад

      Yes, we know that. Afternoon tea (high included) is served in the Salon Proust and the afternoon tea menu options at the Hotel Ritz, that day, did not include tea sandwiches on that particular service because we opted for the glass of champagne. The server said the Chef had chosen to only offer a sweet tea service with the glass of champagne that day (it was a Monday). We wanted the champagne so we didn't make a fuss. Perhaps if we had opted for the basic tea service the Chef would have included the sandwiches. By the time the server told us that our tea service would be a sweet tea service we were half way through the glasses of Champagne. Next time we'll opt for the savory tea service without the champagne.

    Very good coverage of this experience. It's interesting though because, like you, I prefer the tea sandwiches and scones version of afternoon tea. However when you look at the menu online for the Salon Proust there's no mention of sandwiches with ANY of the options. The Bar Vendome does list the traditional afternoon tea which must be nice to have outside on a sunny day. I think we'll try the Bar Vendome when we go, and thank you for helping me figure this out!

      No, we knew what the offering was and had requested the savory tea. When we arrived we were told the Chef decided he wasn't offering that particular tea that afternoon. They offered us the choice of rescheduling or staying. We opted to stay. If you check out our more recent videos, you'll see that we returned in November 2023 and fid get to enjoy the savory tea. 🫖🫖🫖

      The afternoon tea is now served in their Salon Proust, however, if you want them to serve it to you in the Bar Vendome instead of Salon Proust, they will do that for you or even serve it to you in the Hemingway Bar area, inside or outside. However, they seem to prefer to do all of their "Afternoon Tea" service in the Salon Proust. It's the same menu. There were three levels of "tea service" on their Afternoon Tea Menu. We opted for the Afternoon Tea that included a glass of champagne and that day the Chef decided he only wanted to offer a sweet afternoon tea, instead of savory (with the sandwiches). Maybe Mondays are an off day for them with the sandwiches??

    Thank you for sharing and adding historical context. I just watched a series of videos on the history of *Art Deco,* in which the song, _Puttin' On the Ritz_ played. This is a world so foreign to me.
    I used to read _Connoisseur Magazine, European Travel and Life_ and _Architectural Digest_ in the 80s and 90s, being so curious about how the smaller portion lives. So, I've read about it, but still never witnessed it up close.
    It's intimidating just to see it so vividly filmed. I feel like you need to speak French and know everything about the classical world to belong, to relax and enjoy. I've been to France and walked along the Champs Elysees, but none of my group entered into the stores or even peered close to the windows. Even our instructor seemed intimidated and didn't pay much attention to the gallery of stores.

      I appreciate your comments. I don't know your age, but understand, having reached 68 years old and having had a long successful career which afforded me the ability to dip my toe in the finer things in life (usually only on rare occasions), from around my 30's, over the years, I have grown to appreciate any opportunity I have to indulge and considered those opportunities precious (and few). Prior to having my successful career, and being married to successful men, I never imagined myself "puttin' on the Ritz" or even thinking of walking into a haut couture designer's store in Paris or New York, or anywhere. I never even window shopped at such stores. Many years ago, a co-worker introduced me to designer fashions available at department stores, but I could never afford to actually buy anything at retail prices. I'd wait for sales or buy at consignment shops and thrift stores. This year, my husband, who is an architect, has had a good year and generously treated me (for our Anniversary, my birthday and Christmas) to a few designer things I never expected to ever own in my life. Unfortunately, like many, our financial situation, with me already being retired and having my husband so close to retiring himself, doesn't allow us to dine at the Ritz every day or even fly to France anytime we'd like. All I can do is occasionally check out the websites of such places. So, for us, all of it is a VERY luxurious little treat. We do it when we can afford it. It only takes one little splurge at the Ritz, usually, for us in the past, it was always just 1 very expensive cocktail or glass of champagne at the Hemingway Bar, at the Ritz---and done, to experience the "feeling" and decide if it's worth saving up for that treat again. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts!

      I'm a savory person and I even prefer Indian food to all others, b/c it's the ultimate in savory cooking. The madeleine looked tasty, but everything seemed a bit dry to be freshly baked. And champagne at noon, well, I guess . . . I'm mostly a tea drinker these days. I take it now w/o sugar, but adding lemon and honey is nice in the evening.

    • @postcardsfrommygoldenyears
      @postcardsfrommygoldenyears  2 года назад

      Thanks for your note. The madeleine and other things were tasty. I do believe they were freshly made, perhaps not moments before our arrival, but within a day or two. They were mostly things that would be fine for a few days, as well, based on my own experience baking things ahead of time. We would have preferred the tea sandwiches, but tea at the Ritz is still tea at the Ritz. As for the champagne, anytime is fine with me....at breakfast as a mimosa or afternoon with tea. Thanks again for your comments. 😊

    The Ritz seems to have a weird sense of tea time. A tidbit of a biscuit in a lonely bowl of some milk? Champagne WITH tea? Too many fancy desserts at the table. You either end up way overeating a bunch of sugar, OR are tortured by the fact that you have a lot of super-delicious confections right in your face, and CANT eat them! What kind of fun experience is all that?

    • @postcardsfrommygoldenyears

      Merci d'avoir partagé vos impressions sur notre thé de l'après-midi à l'hôtel Ritz. En fait, lorsque nous étions là-bas, nous parlions très doucement et il n'y avait pas de bruit lorsque nous remuions notre thé ou que nous mangions. Pour que les gens nous entendent parler dans la vidéo (puisque nous ne portions pas de microphones à l'époque), j'ai dû augmenter beaucoup le volume de la vidéo lorsque j'ai monté la vidéo pour RUclips. En conséquence, cela rendait chaque son plus fort. Donc, vous avez peut-être pensé que nous faisions beaucoup de bruit. Si j'avais posté la vidéo au volume réel de l'enregistrement original, vous ne nous auriez pas entendu du tout. Nous essayons de ne pas prendre la vie si au sérieux tout le temps de toute façon, mais ce jour-là, nous essayions d'être extrêmement silencieux ET d'enregistrer une vidéo. Nous espérons donc que vous pourrez mieux comprendre le problème technique du son sur la vidéo en raison de l'amplification du son. Merci d'avoir regardé notre vidéo ! 😊☕🍰

    No noise. 🫖☕️🥄🇦🇺.

    • @postcardsfrommygoldenyears
      @postcardsfrommygoldenyears  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching our video. I am not familiar with that rule on the direction one must stir their tea. I suppose that "rule" comes from the same book on tea etiquette that says one must raise their pinky while holding their tea cup as well. Also, my camera was very close to my cup and we were speaking very low, so as not to bother others having tea, while enjoying our tea, and shooting the video. When I edited the video, I had to turn the volume way up to hear our conversations, so I'm sure it may have exaggerated the sounds of the spoon on the cup, making it sound like we were banging our spoons on the teacup, which we definitely were not. As for the "rules", I guess my husband and I tend to be "rebels" and not take life so seriously, at this point in ours. And for a casual afternoon while drinking champagne and sipping tea while overloading on three levels of "sugar", at the lovely Ritz Hotel, the direction in which to stir our tea was not a thought or concern. LOL. I used to own my own French Salon de Tea, here in the US and was trained on the French art of presenting and tasting tea by the masters at Mariage Freres in Paris, many years ago, prior to their allowing me to become one of their authorized retailers, here in the US, so that I could offer my own version of "high tea" and offer tea tasting classes, using their teas. They neglected to share your concerns about the direction one must stir tea and touching the tea cup with one's spoon, etc. Perhaps it's not a French rule? I really think the sound was exaggerated by my increasing the volume when editing the video. But, thanks for sharing. Much appreciated. Keep watching ! Be advised, however, we're apt to break a few more rules along the way.
