I like both from scratch and adjusting ! We all have paintings we’ve put to one side because we’re not too happy with them. This video has already given me ideas on resuscitating a painting I’ve hidden away.

I like watching both Stuart. It’s incredible to me, to see how you turn a blank canvas into a masterpiece. It is also amazing to see how you transform a painting that is already beautiful into stunning and awe.

Another marvelous lesson! Truly! As Tony mentioned, I like both! You show that a painting can be changed, shaped and altered if you don’t like something and make it better! I also like the “from scratch” paintings bc I can see how you think abt composition, perspective and best of all the creation of the sky’s! There are valuable lessons in both presentations. ALL OF THEM ARE MAGNIFICENT! Thank you! And take care!

You have know idea how much inspiration, information and aspiration you've given me throughout the years. I am a native New Yooorker, but you have become part of my every day painting life, so much so that I find myself saying, "I kinda like this bit here," and " Should I try something over there, why not," I thank you once again from the bottom of my paint palette.

Stuart, thank you so much for your generous instruction. You have helped me move through a real confidence block and have allowed me to rekindle my passion for painting without all the angst that goes into the drawing, planning, colors, values, brush strokes and composition rules that seem to stop the joy of simply creating. Thanks again.

Hi Stuart, I really enjoyed watching this painting transform, especially how the blueing really pushed the background out so far into the distance. That was almost like a kind of magic. I also like watching paintings from scratch and feel that you've always had a good balance of showing videos of new paintings and videos of glazings. Thanks for the video.

However, watching you completely transform or otherwise enhance an existing painting always makes me want to fix up some of mine that I am not enthused about. Please keep providing both types. I have a few paintings sitting about which need a bit of “something”. I’m often not sure what that “something” is though! It’s great to see what you can do on the second or third sitting as it gives me motivation to go back to them rather than get out the gesso and start again. The subtlety of colour and texture that you add in this video is a real pleasure to watch.

Thanks for a lovely demo. The addition of the light pink and blue in the sky is masterfully done, made a huge difference to the light in the sky and on the horizon. I really love the difference that the trees made against that light streak. It's a really beautiful painting now.

Absolutely, by showing how you can change something that wasn’t working and create something that does, as you showed in this painting. It’s started by being a bit top heavy, but the changes you made were stunning, this has helped me a lot by seeing the possibility of change in one’s work. Thanks and bonne sante. Julia Rose.

This was very enjoyable. In the beginning this one, to me, had some spots that looked a little "rough" and "unfinished" - and after a while you worked your magic and gave it that special Stuartesque quality again. It's fascinating to see how you envision changes (or not), adding layers and effects. Very interesting and inspiring. New, from scratch is great, but this is also fascinating.

Stuart, I like to see both, from scratch and also titivating old ones. Whereas in the past I would have consigned my own efforts to the rubbish bin I have actually managed to rescue a couple because you’ve shown how you can change things for the better. I still can’t paint very well but I find the process of making changes to my paintings is helping me develop a more seeing eye, I’m standing back and really noticing how I can make improvements. My problem is I am time poor and can’t devote as much time as I’d like to this wonderful pastime so my progress towards creating something worthwhile is very slow. Your videos keep me inspired to carry on.

While I really enjoy seeing you start a landscape from scratch, I also choose to see a Part 2, particularly bc I like to see how to alter, as well as finish a painting. One reaches a certain skill level with your tutorials, but then there’s a need to learn the finer points, & finishing touches as well, such that a painting has a professional finished appearance like yours. Perhaps you could consider alternating between the two types of tutorials?

Fascinating! Thank you! To answer your question, I'd like to see another video of this when you are ready. I do love the freshness of your new works, but I found it unexpectedly liberating to see a successful transformation of a previous painting that had been set aside. I have thought often of doing it, and now I will if only to try new techniques and to further develop the layering and texturing style I've been working with. And, as always, see if my muse rewards me with a happy accident as I move the paint around.

    Stuart,
To answer your question as to whether we prefer a whole painting from the outset or a reworking, my vote goes to the re-working. The reason being that I often pause my paintings to consider what i have done, and think about improving it later and your reworking videos show us how to be brave and not worry about destroying our original and i often find that in can improve the perspective and the feel of the painting. Many thanks. David from Devon

It is always a pleasure to watch you paint whether it is new or finnessing old .
Your landscapes are of course typically French as I imagine in many ways far removed from the nz countryside I see and the farmland that can look similar would perhaps have clumps of macrocarpa or radiata pinetrees.. maybe one day you could include a clump of pines for our pleasure ... you are very kind in sharing your knowledge and feeling for painting with your audience you make me braver arohanui 🌞👍
