Happy Monday everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend! The timing worked out well because we will be posting two full reviews on the 2024 Lexus TX 500h and TX 550h+ on Weds, which most of you should know, is the Lexus equivalent of the Grand Highlander. Stay tuned for our full driving impressions on that vehicle in just a couple days!

Would love your opinion on the interior of the Grand Highlander Platinum vs the TX. From the pictures I can't tell if the Lexus TX is worth the premium price. Judging from pictures alone, it seems to me Toyota didn't do enough on the TX to differentiate the interior from the highest trim of the Grand Highlander.

The major thing I would really like to see in the next year is when you use your directional signal that the digital gauge would open up into a view of what is along your side like what is in the KIA's. The side mirrors have a camera in them, and when you use your directional signal, you see what is alongside of you. I personal think it's a fantastic safety feature. I'm still somewhat undecided on what one to get at the end of this year. The Hybrid Max has more HP and plenty of smaller Cargo space VS the Kia Telluride. The Telluride sx prestige & x pro is less expensive.

@@Bart-dg6qvno noise at all and this is basically what Toyota told me “We just got off the phone with the Toyota technical specialists about the concern with the hood. They have one other case open for the same complaint but are telling us there is no safety concern at this time and to release the vehicle back to you. We did test 2 other Grand Highlanders and they are both doing the same thing. My personal opinion is that due to the lightweight nature of the hood it is susceptible to flex and is showing that movement more obviously because of the black paint’s reflection properties. In my experience, if more of these cases arise, the manufacturer will open an investigation into a possible resolution but at this time we have been instructed to take no action. I will stay alert for any future messages that could relate to this and inform you if I see anything.”

What's not talked about is how horrible the actual mpg is relative to EPA estimates. I get 20 mpg driving mixed on 55-65 mph flat roads. You need to hit 55+ on gear 6 to see 30-35 mpg range. You do a nice review on the Grand Highlander but you are missing a few points. The regular Platinum Highlander Hybrid gets 35mpg city, 35mpg highway which is almost 30%better efficiency than this Grand Highlander. I just did an all day trip to Utah from Wyoming(mountainous) and got an average 37.5 mpg. The styling of the Grand Highlander is a box. It doesn’t even come close to the elegant sporty styling of the regular Highlander. The rear bumper of the boxy G- Highlander is flush with the lift gate and will incur huge damage if struck in the rear. With there being only 100 lbs differential between the two models and the size differential, Toyota had to make some cuts. One being the lack of acoustical glass, door structures, etc. in the G - Highlander. The regular Highlander is super quiet and smooth. And you didn’t mention the difference in price. I won’t even go there because it’s so obvious.

Don’t lie to people in the comments. I had a 2021 Highlander platinum. It was noisy above 50 miles an hour on the highway from day one just wind noise. I changed the tires to top of the line Michelin and it didn’t help. It’s not a super quiet SUV on road trips, and the motor revs all over the place hunting for gears.

@@Ryan2022 I’m not lying. Everything I said about my 2022 Highlander Hybrid Platinum AWD is true. According to your reply you had a 2021 that wasn’t a hybrid model and wasn’t AWD. Also I don’t have a roof rack on mine and they always contribute to road noise. You didn’t say whether yours did or not. Michelin tires always ride rougher than most. That’s why they get the higher mileage warranty.

@@lc7192 we did not have the hybrid. We did have AWD. We had the V6 thrashing on the highway. It did come with the factory roof rails. The Michelin’s were quieter than the good years but the main problem was wind noise above 50 miles an hour which started on day one it’s not a defect. When this redesign first came out, reviewers and owners talked about the pronounce wind noise about 50 miles an hour it’s not a secret and It’s a characteristic of that car it’s still a great car, but we traded it in for a 4Runner which is much quieter on the highway.
We do a lot of long trips from North Carolina to New York and back. The 4runner motor does not hunt all over the place. Looking to save you a dollar in gas. I like the Highlander but it wasn’t our cup of tea on long trips.

it's definitely a good looking vehicle, but with the Highlander already existing
that's big enough except for the cargo area. they could've easily stretched
the wheelbase by an inch, that would give you better cargo space, but now that
it's here what do i think of it. it's nice but there's one flaw.
Explanation time - Toyota Highlander vs Grand Highlander
starting price as follows, Highlander. these are US prices
    LE FWD $39.780
    LE AWD $40.720
    XLE AWD $43.870
    XSE AWD $45.465
    Limited AWD $47.975
    Platinum AWD $51.175
so as you can see the regular Highlander can get fairly pricey, now watch this.
for the longer and newer Toyota Grand Highlander
starting price as follows, and once again these are US prices.
    no L or LE available
XLE AWD starting trim $43.320 & $45.020 on the hybrid a bench seat is standard
Limited AWD $48.110 & $51.410 for the hybrid, 8 seats.
Platinum AWD $53.795 gas only seats 7
Max Limited $54.390 hybrid only seats 7
Max Platinum $58.475 max hybrid powertrain only 7 seats
okay this might be a little unnecessary of a post, but i figure to do a little price
comparison, since people will be out there looking at 3 row options.
so why did i write all this, because i just find it interesting that Toyota has
two vehicles that are similar size, except the Grand Highlander think of it
more like a long wheelbase Chevy Suburban. not quite as long,
but you get the idea. but the reason i find it interesting is that, both are 3 row options.
now obviously the Grand Highlander has more legroom in the 3rd row,
but that's according to what professional sites say. they say 33.5 inches
versus 28 inches in the Highlander. they also say the Grand Highlander has more
headroom, now i shouldn't have to say much about cargo space because that's obvious.
so which do i think is the better buy, well the max hybrid powertrain
is only available in the top trim of the Grand Highlander, and you only
get captains chairs, 7 vs 8. so unless you don't mind it, it's the only
one with the max powertrain. i just don't think it's worth it, if it was a option
on the XLE i would say, it would make it harder to choose the Highlander
over the Grand Highlander, but as it is the choice wouldn't be so easy.
i think what it really boils down to, how big of a 3rd row do you need.
33 inches over 28 isn't a whole lot, but i guess adults could sit back
there in a pitch. in the regular Highlander it's really only for small kids,
both are available with hybrids. the Grand Highlander is also a little higher
in terms of price, but the regular Highlander is not cheap either.
garage space is also something you have to consider.

umm idk, maybe it COULD work. but check your local area, extended area, state, and tristate area to area what dealerships even have this vehicle.
i mean, the demand is there but the supply isnt. so why make an extra model that could be a hit and miss when any toyota grand highlander hybrid is flying off the warehouses BY THE BACK ORDERssss.
ask any dealer what their back orders look like, and its at least 3 or more.
theres aleady 3 trims just by fuel type currently.
      1) gas
      2) hybrid
      3) hybrid max
which is even before the amenity trims are factored in.
i could be wrong. im NOT a dealer, salesman, nor do I work with Toyota in any facet. so i hope your wish comes true.
but to me, choice overload doesnt seem like a great idea. it caters to NICHE people but not the masses.
anyone can use a standard hybrid, PHEVs need additional accomodations. which adds 2 additional costs, 1) on the vehicle and 2) on the home owner. (of which not all people own homes) so sadly the niche of needing a vehicle buyer to also be a homeowner makes PHEVs less viable. but yeah, good luck😅

My grand highlander hybrid max is almost stalling on some turns, the tranny would shake and it takes a bit for power to kick in. It's hard to replicate. I brought my car in also bc the power would surge on some acceleration. Toyota tried to update the software but it failed up update so they ended up resetting the ECU so the car is working as it should until it relearns my driving habits and will power surge again. Dont get me wrong, i love this damn car but i got 96mo warranty this care since it's first year first model. I got the second Hybridmax engine in the state. If you notice this, can you also address it?

Same issue in my RX500-exact same power train. 6500 miles in and it’s been so frustrating. Clunky, especially at low speed. Inconsistent shifts. Dealer “cannot duplicate”… yeah right.

My 2004 Lexus ES330 had a similar issue. It's probably how Toyota programs their drivetrains to increase longevity. Still sucks though. I hated it back then, I'm sure that I will hate it now if I buy a GH Hybrid MaX.@@grisa12345

That’s why you shouldn’t buy the first year of a brand new drive train, there’s always kinks to work out.

@@tails300 i knew the risk of first year car hence why i got 96mo warranty bumper to bumper. I need this car now for price and space for my family. It's still more reliable than other makes and models im sure. Someone has to buy to buy and complain of any issues. I've been very vocal about it. There's not much in this class. I definitely dont want a surbuban or Sequoia which is much larger but has less interior room. Not to mention $25-30k more

Im definitely not a Toyota fanboy, but if i had $57k to spend on a family hauler I'd get a GH hybridmax limited. Seems like the quickest vehicle in the class, good efficiency, and reliability and resale should be pretty good too being a Toyota. Now if my budget was $50k or less, I'd most likely opt for the new 2024 Traverse LT with supercruise. The non-hybridmax versions of this Grand highlander are very underwhelming...

Depends on your need, space and minimum 7 passenger then go for GH. If you are just for some extra storage behind second row then CX90.
