There is one thing that reviewers always get wrong, in my opinion. It's the constant complaining that SUVs need to have some sort of firm sports suspension for some reason. That might be cool when you have a press vehicle for a week, but then you own the car for years it gets really tiresome really fast. I own a CX9, and the one thing i hate about it is its stiff suspension, to the point where it will be a major point on consideration for my next vehicle to have something softer. I will sacrifice the 10% of the time i want a sporty feel for the 90% where i want a softer comfortable ride
i have the highlander hybrid and its AWFUL at low speeds. if im going under 30 the body roll is atrocious, but anything on the highway its excellent. it eats pot holes, its decent on turns at higher speeds, but turns at low speed or steep angles just throw you around.
Your videos are always top notch. This one made me realize how good it is when you two disagree on something. It really makes the viewer think about the issue you are discussing.
I’ve owned several iterations of both the Highlander and Sienna. The Sienna by far has superior room and better driving manners on highway where it spent most of its time. If you’ve got kids or dogs, the Sienna’s big sliding door is better for easy entry. Storage is better in Sienna too. Yes,it’s a minivan, but it’s better than a Highlander.
If Toyota marketing has humor and assumes their customer base is oldschool, they could sell it with a marketing slogan: *The Sienna - There can be more than one*
Sienna was my first choice...but they got rid of the v6 in favor of the v4 hybrid and the drive difference is noticeable. Wish they still offered a V6 version as the used ones available are pricey :(
Jack's comment about the seats being "short" are important. I had to get rid of my CX-5 that I otherwise loved due to the terrible seat shape. The Bottom part of the seat was too short for leg support and also shaped wrong. I can't believe no reviewers really mentioned that.
@@fortheloveofnoise The designers are Asian men, building it for American women. Though in the case of this particular monster, I don't know any woman who'd want to buy it.
I’ve had two cars with amazing seats for my thigh support and that was the Sonata Limited 2.0T, 2015 and 2018 Have not found anything else with seats like that. I’m 6’8”, I need thigh support or my lower back gets angry. Our 4Runner lacks that and I can’t do long drives with it u fortunately. Sat in a new Tundra and it has that support but not paying that much coin.
Indeed. Such small details are hard to notice (feels a bit uncomfortable at test drive, but can't figure out why). I got rid of my Opel minivan mostly because of seats. Some "genius" at GM had an idea to put tiny seats in a big minivan. Caused massive butt and back pain after a while, eventually made it impossible to drive that car. Got Forester instead and now I again can drive for hours in comfort. It is a bit smaller, has less storage space, but it is so comfortable. Driving it on gravel roads too, which I used to avoid.
It looks more like a really large RAV 4 than a Highlander, IMO. Interior is standard Toyota. Mostly good. I like the RAV 4 ride better than the Highlander because the Highlander is more floaty so this car would be more floaty than the Highlander. Still, the ride quality of Toyotas in terms of impact harshness is superb. Ride motions are more felt in the crossovers than the sedans. This vehicle likely to sell quite well for Toyota.
To be fair, it honestly looks more like a super-sized 2022 Toyota Avanza, an MPV/Minivan that is sold mainly in Asia. Try go look it up. It has a similar kind of front fascia, similar stance and overall side profile, same 7 seat configuration, pretty much the design is similar to the Grand Highlander but in smaller form.
The Islander and the Sienna has the north american look. The rav4 and now the grand Islander has Toyota the international exterior designes. As for the interior it is really an Islander XL with changes only to the screens and pretty much the same great noise nsulation level (the rav4 insulation is crap).
I Love Love Love my 2022 Highlander and can’t wait for myGrand Highlander to come in! We sat inside a brand new Tahoe and third row seat did not have the kind of room the Grand Highlander had. The way my 2022 Highlander was mapped out fit my family’s needs incredibly well. The changes in the Grand Highlander are exciting for us. This review is lame, comes from a short, bald, negative guy thinking he’s cool. Anyone that has been in my Highlander loves it and I know they’d love the Grand Highlander. Can’t wait!!!!
I purchased a 2021 Highlander Limited thinking I needed the 3 row because of the growing number grandkids. I was going to purchase the RAV 4. In 3 years I have not once used the third row. While the Highlander has been a good vehicle with 0 mechanical problems, I could have saved a lot of money in vehicle cost and GAS if I would have bought the RAV 4.
I bought a Used Sienna Van back in 2018. What a great vehicle. Amazing quality, smooth ride, easy Ingress/Egress and tons of storage capacity. You can enter via the sliding side doors or the liftgate. I have 4 captains chairs and a 3rd row. Not one issue in the last 6 years. I think this thing would run with No gas and No Oil, lol. Buy the Sienna.
You comment about just getting a minivan is spot on. Save money save tons of gas money. There is zero benefit to getting a large SUV to haul people that has a high entry cost and a higher fuel cost for the life of the vehicle. We are out of the minivan stage, but back in 2008 we thought about a Honda Pilot for our five member family, but once we saw the Honda Odyssey and how much better it was as a people hauler plus how much better mpg it got, it was a no brainer. Ironically, I still have that van and two of my kiddos are learning to drive on it.
just bought GH hybrid limited. price/quality is so great, i can not ask for more. it has all the modern bells and whistles you can think of. 360 camera, active cruise control(which works amazingly well), ventilated/heated seats, wireless apple play, upgraded sound system.. i loaded it full with my buddies, 6 adult men were sitting perfectly fine, in all raws. and the trunk was full of food and beer. i personally do hit highway daily, avrg mpg is 33.3… thats your small sedan mpg on car size of a mountain. the only downside is lack of power, its 4 cylinders plus hybrid, but thats your trade off for good mpg. you want it be faster, buy hybrid max.. i personally don’t like to have turbine in my car, so im fine with it to a bit less powerful but less gas hungry on gas in return.
I do not like soft cushy rides. I love how mazdas drive. I just bought a cx90 because of how it drives and how it makes me feel when I drive. Whatever input I give it, the output is very satisfying. Mazda cx90 looks good and drives well and sporty. Also, i have 2 teens and dont want a bland looking interior like this grand highlander. CX-90 TURBO S premium plus suits my ever need in a 3 row SUV. It feels like a much more expensive car and ride.
There are car enthusiasts that need 3 rows. I am one of them so I got a CX-90 PHEV. The doors fit water bottles Mark… The back doors have room for 2 water bottles.
@@mbenton6I think he means that's why there aren't more 3 row SUVs like the CX90 in terms of handling/ride dynamics... Most people don't care about having a sporty SUV and just want something that's comfortable with ample space.
As always, great video as pertaining to the breakdown of the actual car. I take one small exception with the cringey jokes about having a family and actually needing a car this size - I am THE GUY you guys were poking fun at. I have 5 kids, ages 15 to 23, so only a couple are still at home. But this would have been the exact car I would have wanted when we needed a vehicle big enough to haul everyone in comfort. We never made the jump to a full-size SUV because a minivan was 10x more practical and a mid-size SUV was too small, but we always knew we'd look cooler in a SUV and life would be infinitely more interesting with some light off-road capability. But having a family, next to marrying the right person (which I did) was the single best decision of my life. Nothing has made me happier. These days my wife is driving a 2020 F150 Platinum which she loves and is the perfect car for hauling her ski's and snowboards + a couple kids and friends up into the UT mountains without having to worry about getting stuck. I have a Tesla, '22 M3P. My youngest is currently learning to drive and she wants a car with a manual transmission (did I do something right?). My son did laps around SpeedVegas in a GT500 and a 911 GT3RS for a graduation trip and I watched with tears in my eyes as he passed a timid Huracan driver. See? It can actually be fun. My kids all love or at least appreciate cars (my oldest daughter bought her own '22 Elantra N 8DCT a little over a year ago, her twin recently went for a '24 Outback Touring, we're still working on her haha), and we have the best times getting together on the weekends for BBQ's, the dog park, skiing, hiking, camping, etc. When the kids were younger we took them to the drag races whenever we could until they closed them down several years ago, unfortunately, but those were some of the best times together and they still talk about how fun it was. I'm sure the joking is somewhat in jest but I wanted to chime in with my .02 anyway, because I seriously don't get all the negativity around marriage and family and wanted to give my perspective. We've invested a lot in our kids and it's been amazing. I regret nothing. Peace ✌
I love y’all’s reviews. Has 99% of what I’m looking to hear about vehicles and I love the candor with which it’s delivered! As someone looking into 3 row SUV’s, I would love to see a comparison video of the pilot and grand highlander, with a sienna thrown in as a sort of baseline/outside comparison as well.
Personally, I like my 2023 Honda Odyssey Elite. It has a 'sporty' ride, is very maneuverable, gets an honest 28 mpg, has manual controls for HVAC, decent tunes, and supportive seats. In the minivan segment, most give you chair-like seating in the front two rows which is important for sitting on long hauls. Ingress/egress is great. I just turn my ass towards the seat, plop down, and swing my legs in. There's plenty of room for us. If I needs more space, I find a contractor with a pickup.
I have a 2018 Odyssey(which replaced a 2016 Highlander)and the handling for a minivan is really pretty good. Point of reference I have also owned several Porsche's so I understand good handling.
Wishing I could go back to my 20's and fix my bad decisions, I feel personally attacked 😂 this looks pretty decent to me (although I haul hockey equipment, not kids).
@@YBehri Man, more than anything, I regret not pushing harder with working out and getting my relationships in order. We got ours sept 1st. It’s great for our family that constantly changes from 5-8. Outgrew the ‘16 Highlander. And, we still tow a 4000 lb trailer and commute 1000km per week. Meets all our needs, including the ability to get the canoes to rough gravel road locations. It handles better than the old HL that’s for sure.
@@gosman949 because choosing to pay more now to get what you want now while demand remains high and supply is low (artificially or otherwise) makes someone foolish? Some people just don't care about that as much as others. You obviously value money over time... many of us find time way more valuable than money. I will gladly throw away an extra $5k or so to get something I want now instead of waiting a couple years to see if demand/supply trade places. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed.
Solid product, just seems like it could be greatly improved by being a couple inches lower, and replacing the traditional rear doors with some kind of doors on perhaps a sliding mechanism for superior ingress/egress, especially when you have to buckle in kids in a tight parking lot stall. If someone were to make a vehicle like that, that perhaps got a 36/36/36 EPA mpg rating, I think tons of people would love it, as long as they didn't let some kind of moronic imagined social stigma stop them from choosing it.
Mark, I appreciate your rebuttal to Jack. It echoes what I have to think about right now. I had the same vitriol Mark did when he went off on the Buick after I (reluctantly) drove a Traverse a few weeks ago. That thing was absolutely repellant.
Great review guys. Ultimately I think this is a luxury minivan. If you need to tow: Sequoia for $60k. If you don't need to tow: Sienna for $36k. I suppose this thing is a middle ground at $44k but it's really only for those that want the utility of a minivan but want to look like they're driving a truck/SUV (that can't tow).
The 2 of us love road trips and camping. We had a 2011 Sienna and now a 2023 Outback. I would buy a Sienna again if it had removable second row seats and 8” ground clearance.

All-in-all, not a bad place to spend some time with my three step kids while we wait for their deadbeat dad who will inevitably fail to show up for his weekly visitation. On the upside, those poor bastards won’t have to spend any time in his Buick Enclave.
So true about the Enclave interior. I sat in the latest generation a few years ago as it was styled nicely outside and I had carryover good feelings about Buicks from my past, albeit a very distant past. I couldn't wait to get out of it. How it might drive was irrelevant. If unspecial is a word, that interior was the definition of it.
Went with the Feb lease offer on the Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Altitude was roughly $240/month. Parents have an easy time getting in and out, 17 year old loves the 3rd row, 3 year old is happy and doesn't kick the front seat.
By chance, did you have any hesitations or surging driving this with 87? I have the regular highlander with the 2.4 turbo and it surges and bucks at medium load under 2200 rpm. The only solution now is to run 91+ and Toyota dealers and corporate refuses to admit there's a problem
@@web hasn't been a thing since DI came in. Atomizes fuel and has a cooling effect so you can run higher compression/temps on 87. Plenty of modern motors with high compression and or turbos can run 87 just fine. The t24 in this was taken from the nx which was tuned for 91. I don't think they did much outside patting it on the head and told it that it was a good boy, it can run 87 now.
We have the turbo 4 with 2000 km now. No surging issue at any RPM. Sorry to hear. I'd keep the pressure on them. I suspect there's something more going on, perhaps with your trans.
Reminds me of the British sitcom Keeping up Appearances where a lady has the surname Bucket that she insists is pronounced "Bu-kay", but everyone keeps calling her Mrs Bucket. "Oh no dear, I don't drive an On-klayve, I drive an En'Cla-ve!"
That his videos aren't sterile-scripted is the salt in the soup. It is a worthy price for speaking long segments kinda freely. His statement there reminded me of that one time when an avian aficionado said "Birds are like angels with wings".
How come my options for 3 rows are. -bed on wheels (affordable brands) -drives great, tech/features suck (Mazda) -astronomically expensive (luxury brands) My wifes boyfriend is not happy. Not one bit. Very frustrating that once I go and leave my estate to them they don't even have a good option to spend my money on.
I bought a 2021 Highlander because I needed the 5,000 lb. tow capacity and my wife didn’t want to drive a pick up truck. We may have used the third row a few times. Of course it’s an appliance, but it’s reliable, no surprises and has good resale value.
I'd buy a Sienna if they made the interior less hard plasticy. I'm hoping for a mid cycle refresh with an interior upgrade. I love the fuel economy but prefer Honda's interior.
Yup. I would rather just have a minivan, but I agree - Highlander has a much nicer interior than Sienna and the seats fold flat without all the gaps, bumps and latches.
Toyota put all the RnD money for the interior in the highlander because they know Americans would rather be seen in the less practical Highlander over the Sienna
@@whatsitlike6392 for the money nothing matches their practicality. And sliding doors for ingress/egress are just better. And insane cargo space WITH the 3rd row up too
I'm debating between the grand highlander platinum and the Honda Pilot Elite. I have 3 toddlers, and one of them gets car sick all the time (in my 2017 corolla) . Jack talks about getting sick in the grand highlander. Would getting the Pilot be a better option if i dont want my. Kids throwing up in the back seats?
wife traded in her 2011 Prius (got top trade in dollar) for a '23 Highlander Hybrid 3 row seating, she's happier than a pig in slop being taxi driver for 4 grandchildren plus 3 adults to watch kids play T ball, hardball, and now flag football, and cheerleading. Go Toyota!!!
Love all the physical controls on the grand highlander, especially the ac. Are they going to bring this design to the regular highlander? I have a 2020 limited highlander and hate how heat and cool buttons are in infotainment system. That’s my biggest gripe.
great review as always, I wanted GH initially but due to high dealer unreasonable markups in my area, I ended up choosing the Mazda CX 90, The compromise on a few cubic feet of space will be easily outweighed by the I6 performance. And yes, no motion sickness for my kids with the CX 90. Keep up the good work and looking forward to your future reviews.
He's not wrong though, they are piles of shit. My wife and I rented an Enclave Avenir for an 800 mile road trip and for a top trim vehicle it was comically cheap and chintzy.
The whole segment talking about handling on the back roads is absolutely is HILARIOUS. No one is taking ANY of these on any type of fun roads.. not the mazda not ANY of these. People are NOT buying these huge things to chase down a sports car. These things are made to carry people in the MOST comfort and max space. This GrandHighlander had best drivetrain that's efficient AND powerful at the same time. It’s a winning combo
There's more to buying a car to what you're carrying and how you like to drive. I'd like to see more than surface level analysis. Cross overs do better in crash tests for one and some have some attributes of a truck like 5k 6k pounds of towing without the need to have one. When you're spending 50k on a car you want to hit as many needs as possible, not hit 2 out of 10 and say "well at least people I will never meet think I'm cool"
I rented cars for a couple years rode 7 seaters and the enclave was a really nice ride! The woman at the rental said they were hands down loved by those renting in my same class. I agree, it was awesome. 2019-2021 it was the most luxurious ride. Felt like a Mercedes without the muscle.
I got a 2024 Pilot, I just feel like that 4 cylinder is going to wear out faster than the V6. I like the looks of this car though, and the interior seems a little nicer. I just hope that my Pilot will last until my 3 year old is driving
This is such a dumb myth. Why would a smaller engine wear out faster? You realize how small commercial engines are relative to the weight they push around? If it is built correctly it will last just fine. Toyota has V6s more reliable than V8s of other manufacturers that prove engine size has nothing to do with reliability. Keep your oil changes and do the maintenance required and the engine will be fine.
@@parkerdalo3248forget the size. There is a large layer of complexity added, along with dozens of parts when you add a turbo system to a motor (all of which can go wrong). Turbo motors by nature have higher pressures inside the motor, higher temps (which is why intercooler), etc. So yeah a smaller motor running boost will probably have a few more issues over the long run than some NA V6 (assuming they are both designed correctly). B58 is incredible but it probably won't last as long as E. G. a naturally aspirated 5L Lexus motor ie the million mile motor
Newsflash: Most of the world has moved their SUV’s and trucks to 4cyl well over a decade ago and since they dont use engines as a dick measuring contest, it reveals that it’s more a preference thing than a reliability issue.
Government: “cars have to be more efficient and environmentally friendly” Automakers: “we’ll give them smaller engines, and increase the size and weight with more power and torque” It doesn’t make sense, why do cars just keep getting comically large year after year in the US?
Its complicated, and frustrating as shit, but logical once you understand how everything is intertwined. A couple important voices you left out of that conversation: Insurance companies: "cars have to be safer" Accountants: "we need to make at least $X per car that we sell" Customers: "I'm not paying 50 grand for that tiny car" and Shareholders: "You're not in business to make cars, you're in business to make money"
Downfall compensation panic. When a mindset doesn't change but runs into its limits, the end approaches with exponential speed. Psychologically it is closely connected to why people get bigger all the time, too.
"It doesn’t make sense, why do cars just keep getting comically large year after year in the US?" It's because people keep getting comically larger year after year in the US.

Have not found anything else with seats like that. I’m 6’8”, I need thigh support or my lower back gets angry. Our 4Runner lacks that and I can’t do long drives with it u fortunately. Sat in a new Tundra and it has that support but not paying that much coin.
Yup my gf cx5 kills me on longish drives too
I saw one on the road. I had the same first impression. I thought it was a large RAV4. I was honestly confused for a second.
I have the 2021 also we use the third row for extra storage in the back. I love this car and it has the v6 which is very powerful.
Great review Mark
Not if you got a hybrid. I love mine it gets constant 35 + mpg love the extra space and use the 3 row for grand kid once and a while
@@paulschuenke9529 Agreed!
But 2018 was last year
That was the best vehicle I never wanted to buy.
That Buick burn in the beginning got me bursting in tears 😂
That ending cracked me up! Keep up the good work guys, you're making the most entertaining (and practical, down to earth) car reviews on YT.
Jacks laugh at the end was great! Glad you left that in lol. Another great review!
just bought GH hybrid limited. price/quality is so great, i can not ask for more.
it has all the modern bells and whistles you can think of.

The doors fit water bottles Mark… The back doors have room for 2 water bottles.
thats great but most people prefers a cushy ride, thats why theres not a lot of cx90 types

That Buick Enclave rant at the beginning was golden lol
You are great in choosing the right songs in the background @3:58 minute mark. With the funny and sarcastic comments, please don't stop making video's

Mork,
Thanks for the subdued rage on the interior segment. I really appreciate your anger and detest for the Buick Ucravethisshitbox.
I see what you did there.
It sure is a good thing we don't have to contend with moronic imagined social stigmas. That would be a tragedy.
Mark, I appreciate your rebuttal to Jack. It echoes what I have to think about right now.
Good luck finding a sequoia for under 90k
I'm actually in the market for a luxury minivan and am thinking this is the closest available since you can't get a Toyota Alphard/Vellfire in the US.

Now I really want to see the Enclave review.
Back in the day turbo almost always meant premium octane. I always assume 87 compatibility is just a marketing ploy
@@webit’s a planned obsolescence marketing ploy…
@@web hasn't been a thing since DI came in. Atomizes fuel and has a cooling effect so you can run higher compression/temps on 87. Plenty of modern motors with high compression and or turbos can run 87 just fine.
The t24 in this was taken from the nx which was tuned for 91. I don't think they did much outside patting it on the head and told it that it was a good boy, it can run 87 now.
Seems the problem is only in the 2.4 turbo. The 2.5 Hybrid is a proven drive train.
We have the turbo 4 with 2000 km now. No surging issue at any RPM. Sorry to hear. I'd keep the pressure on them. I suspect there's something more going on, perhaps with your trans.

Odyssey's are so much more refined than Siennas.
