I set up a 20 gallon aquarium yesterday with a bottom made up of an inch of a mixture of pond soil, regular soil and a little worm compost and two inches of fine sand on top. I included two different types of floating plants, a rock with Taiwan moss and several plants that could tolerate low lighting. (It's an old acquarium with neon lights) I inserted two or three leaves taken from a pond so as not to immediately load the tank with too much debris and I added the water they had "dirtied". One day after setting it up, I have already noticed small creatures swimming in the aquarium and I am super excited to have a corner of nature in my living room. I am super happy to have found this beautiful channel whose teachings I feel are in tune with what I have always wanted from an aquarium. Thank you Father Fish!

With a dirted deep substrate there is no need for any kind of fertilizers.
