Years ago Sony already made a water resistant phone with a replaceable battery, it's not Alien science.
Yepp. Hell i ran the like 200 dollar moto G i think it was from years ago. That had a replaceable battery and was water resistant.
Samsung did a similar thing with the S5 Neo.

In hindsight it might now have been an early MotoG but the S4 or S5 active. It's been a while.
Samsung is still selling water-resistant phones (IP68) with removable batteries.

i remember when people would carry another battery along and just swap them when needed.
It would be especially useful now considering that if you're a person like me that has had their phone for years their battery is not what it used to be
Because a lot of manufacturers back then gave you a second battery in the box when you bought a phone new, for free.
I used to do that with my note 4. I even had a little charging case for the battery so I could charge it outside the phone

I was just going to comment how I used to do just this, pre-charge a battery so it was full, then keep it in my pocket wherever I went so that I could easily swap batteries when the one in use died, then I would charge that dead battery up again when I could - I forget how I did that, if they had chargers for the batteries themselves, or if I put the dead battery into an old phone I wasn't using, but that's not important.

You can repair your phones, vast majority don’t give a fuck to learn how, and would still pay the fee to get it changed. Not to mention how much poorer quality batteries are gonna be. Wasn’t good then, won’t be good now

@Sutekhson-ol9jj except that the replacement parts are impossible to get and they do little things like solder the ram onto the motherboard of their computers and pair the cpu and bios chips so you can't replace one without replacing the other. Seriously, you sound like you have no idea about what's going on

it was our past as well, but many kids may not know it...
Instead breaking phone after dropping it, it just splited into tree parts rear back, phone and battery, no one need to repair screen or cases.

Remove the Battery.
Put the sim in its place carefully.
Put the battery back carefully aligning the battery pins.
Close the Lid.
Now:
Use ejector tool to open the tray.
Put sim into tray.
Close.
Less number of step. Convenient way imo.
But removable batteries were great. Sad that they are no more. Especially on Laptops.

The Galaxy S5, my favorite phone, had a removable battery and was water proof. It was amazing.
I hope the law also protects users from Apple adding 'security' to their battery so that if you don't replace it with an $800 genuine battery, your touch screen feature won't work (or something else is nerfed).

Pretty much all phones used to have replaceable batteries, although nice to see it back, if you like your current phone then it's good for doubling it's lifespan.
Depends on the apps and security updates.
If you drive a lot and use phone for navigation/music while driving, it spends a lot of time on charger, constantly heating up the battery, and it kills them quickly. This will potentionally save a ton of e waste.
Not really, they could brick the device through other means like software updates. Personally experienced this when my S20+ screen started showing a line after an update and a few days later the screen turned completely white. Searched for solutions but it turns out this issue was really common and was irreversible meaning I needed to pay $300 for a screen replacement

@@deusexmachina5769 I'm surprised they haven't gotten sued for this, yet. My Note 4 had died at around 2 years as well when a software update came and made it unbootable (eMMC error). Pretty sure they were sued for this.
I hardly see how a removable phone back would "increase manufacturing complexity" vs having to use a curved piece of glass. In fact, they increased manufacturing complexity so we COULDN'T get into the phone lol.
Exactly they don't want people messing with the stuff because they make more money selling you a new phone then you hsving the ability to repair your own phone
Just glueing the whole thing together instead of having parts designed to come apart certainly increases complexity. Right now the iPhone chassis is just one sealed box but if the battery is user replaceable, you have to have multiple sealed compartments.
Ehm, try it make IP 68 rated with swappable battery... it is easy, isn't it?

The EU need to force phone manufacturers to continue pushing Android OS updates for long enough for the phone to even need a battery replacement.
If I'm not mistaken, i think they actually have something like that going on too.
Just get an iPhone you literally pay for the software longevity, google or other companies like Samsung would probably charge you even more for that in wich case androids would become just as expensive as iPhones

I don't know about this, guys, if consumers are allowed to remove the batteries then they might start throwing them at each other or trying to eat them or something.
That's why they have manuals in the US to tell you not to do that and don't iron your clothes while wearing them.

False. Back in my day, we had gameboys that required 4 AA batteries. They were easily removable. Although we did loose the battery cover, we were smart enough to not eat them.

i don't wanna say it but you know back in my age everything that have battery have freedom to remove it and replace along side with simcards and sdcards for extra data.
My old Nokia just push a button and slide the battery off the back of the phone and slide a charged one on, in Seconds. Loved that phone

My old note 4 was arguably better than new phones. Removable battery, headphone jack, worked as a universal remote (I could literally mess with any TV in public like I'm in watch dogs). It even had 4k recording back then.
Same here, could've used it for much longer if I hadn't updated the software which kills the device
id still use mine if i could, but its network locked and a PITA to try to undo that. thanks USA. and the screen is trying to peel off... but it still functions. just did a wipe on it in case i decide to finally dispose of these old phones laying around.
I used my note 4 until 2019. It eventually started to do the phone equivalent of bsod and even the replacement batteries I bought were almost DOA. They had been sitting in the warehouse too long.
I really miss that sucker.😢

Y'all are getting way too excited. IMO it's very likely a device battery qualifies as "readily removable" if you can get a replacement battery, and the replacement process is well documented and non-destructive.

There are always advantages and disadvantages: a second charged battery quickly gives you a lot of additional running time for the device that matches the battery.
The power bank can charge anything that can be charged via USB.

It's no going to increase complexity. They just need to change the tape under the batteries for the easy to remove one that already exists on some phone models
I'm so sad because the biggest problem with phones is the battery, it just becomes terrible in a few years, but my phone is still functioning decently.

@@briskymfs Well at least you don't need to throw away the phone. In fact it's not that much to deal to upgrade nowadays than what it used to. Look the specs are almost the same just with minor changes, upgrading costs for hundred dollars unlike replacing a battery for low price. You rather saving money than getting new features that you all don't use in fact not all new features are important on you unless if you are a big fan of it.

You always can check your imei by dialing *#06# also keep your IMEI private too.
My phone already has a replaceable battery. The only down side is that it makes it less waterproof.
I'm glad I have the Fairphone 4 so I can already experience the joy of easily replacing my battery.

It's not true, many sites have picked up on this information, but in reality UE is asking for easier battery replacement, not interchangeable batteries.
Basically, if you can replace your battery yourself without going to a manufacturer with a repair kit, that's enough, so Apple Samsung and many others are already in line, and nothing will change for them.

Just do an ejector battery from the side like you do a SIM tray.
I like this idea, but something can go in the battery slot and block the battery if it's stuck. Having removable battery panel also allows us to clean the battery contacts easily. The battery will also need to be strong to prevent getting damaged by careless customers.
Isn't that something that LG used to do in some of their phones? I believe one of them was the G5

A removeable-battery smartphone
is honestly a completely different day-to-day experience, especially if you buy a second battery.
Also it means more phones will be made out of plastic, which I honestly prefer,
not just for the lighter weight, better grip, increased signal strength, improved repair-ability,
but for the price too.
I still use a Nokia 8048 windows phone that is made out of steel, with a plastic back. you are right it heavy for its size. but it strong as hell. it will take more punishment than the cheap plastic phones the make now.

This does not mean you need a removeable cover; it also means the phone can stay the same body style but can be opened with tools that are easily found online or supplied to you via the phone maker

Companies can just add a layer of protection so a device can only work with a specific battery. (If this law is actually going to be applied I expect Apple starting the trend I just mentioned)

Phones are already way faster than the vast majority of people actually need. Cut costs by reusing previously released chipsets, and redirect those cost savings into battery swapping.

Why would removable batteries be more costly? I still remember when they were the standard years ago, when the phones with integrated batteries were introduced they were more expansive even with lower specs than a phone with a removable battery.

It happens that people drop their phone in wet environments or have it out in heavy rainfall. But they can make phone water resistant even with easier removable batteries.
Waterproof phones is nothing i rely on, but it's nice to increase my chances of survival.

funny because just yesterday i changed the battery of my fathers iphone and fuck me was it a pain in the ass to get into this fucker and to remove the battery adhesive. the apple store actually wanted 250€ + 49€ for the battery, so i bought a battery for 12€ and did it myself, with an ifixit kit and a little help from youtube. cant what for usbc and easy to change batteries on all phones.
There must be also compulsion to include a dedicated Memory card slot.
Replacable batteries were normal until Apple made them not normal. Opening a phone to change the bettery or the SIM was not only normal, it was expected.
You all got hoodwinked into thinking phones were sealed units only a professional could handle.
Imagine having two batteries for your phone and putting one on the charger, and then if the one in your phone dies you can instantly be back to 100% after a swap. (In a modern phone)
No point in getting a new battery when the phone loses software support.
Dude phones don't just stop working when software support ends. You can still use them as a backup phone or a work phone .

@@Mr.Morden if there is a bug in a app which makes it useless, other apps exist. If there is a bug in the system, Android devices have tons of workarounds while iPhone users have the opportunity to learn jailbreaking.
Just install a custom ROM. Why would you even want to use a stock OS, on most Android phones (especially Chinese ones) it works like garbage and is bloated af

I think that the eu has done great work at making pro consumer laws, but i want to have a definition of easily replaceable, as the simple "pop off the back" system could compromize would-be waterproof phones, but apple should not require the activation of a battery just for the phone to give accurate readings, etc.
It's not completely true, pop off batteries don't compromise the waterproof level. There have been older phones with replacable batteries and good IPX level. They just have to change their engineer's objectives and they can make it work
Look, if you buy a water-resistant phone you kinda have to expect to pay someone for having the seal as good as new.
And I'm fine about paying an official store for doing it. What I'm not fine with is paying 100+ euros for a battery replacement. It's a cheap work, it's not fair to charge me that much

That's just the 1st step. We need standardized form-factors, so that we can swap batteries of different devices, without having to desperately search for a specific model.
This was possible with old Samsung Galaxies: S4, J3 Mission, J2 Prime, and perhaps S5, all had the exact same battery

Maybe. It couldn't be standardized across every company, just individually, but even then as someone who doesn't make phones I can't pretend to know what affect that may have on the overall form factor of a given phone if all phones are required to use the same interchangeable battery. That and the power draw of phones are all different.
It's like being required to stick 6 AA batteries into a 360 controller simply because the Sega Game Gear needed that amount despite the controller only really needing 2-- or visa versa.

@@lethauntic Many battery packs these days are already the same, just with a different ribbon cable, slightly different form factor or even just a different part number.
Standarizing them would just mean that is easier for us to fix our devices.

I once thought this way too. But even with my Pixel 5a that did have a 3.5mm, I never used it. BT or USB is all you need.

USB forces you to either charge or listen to music, not both.
You might not need this, but others do. I listen to music daily while charging my S7.
@@skaleee1207 A $3 dongle lets you charge & use the USB port simultaneously. I bought multiples types of adapters last year, in the off chance I need them, and have only used 1 of them in that time.
And I can get BT earbuds just as cheap as weird ones. I can even get quality USB-C earbuds if I want wired. (AND I can still charge with that adapter.)
@@skaleee1207 just don’t lose the earbuds and modern headphones usually support features like find my on AirPods where you can track them, with AirPods Pro 2 you will even find them inside your home because it has a U1 chip wich makes it possible to see the exact distance from your phone to the AirPods
@@Sassquatch0 IT might not be an issue in the EU or NA, but the rest of the world is not so rich to afford Airpods or similarly good bluetooth earbuds. I am not disagreeing with you, its just that a good pair of wired buds cost 3-4x less than wireless ones.
And coming to the point of USBs, yes USB Type-C might be the only connector one needs, then again USB-As still exist in the consumer electronics ecosystem and is way less expensive. So , yeah, not disagreeing with you on the usability aspect but respectfully disagreeing on the Cost aspect.

When smartphones first came out you are able to replace the battery. And I used to carry a second battery with me. That was fully charged and if I ever ran out of power. I would just swap the battery real quick.
And it always helped a lot if I was on a road trip or something and needed navigation.

Crazy how we had these things not too long ago. Removable batteries, headphones slots, and ob laptops removable drives, RAM, and even USB-A ports.
It's funny because that's how it use to be. Replacement of a battery was super easy and the consumer could do it themselves. I'm happy to hear this
Remember when I first got an iPhone 4 and the battery needed to be replaced, I thought I could buy one and do it myself and quickly found out the thing was glued into the phone and there was a weird connectors, and all types of shit going on. That was the beginning of phones being frustrating for me.
I used to have the 10,000 mah zero lemon battery when I used to have the samsung galaxy note 4. I miss being able to have a removable battery and swap it for the highest capacity available. It was literally a brick but the phones battery would last me all day, the way I use my phone, the 10,000 mah lasted me the whole day not even 2 or 3 days. I have the display brightness maxed out 100% 24/7 on manual, autobrightness turned off, dark mode turned off, power savings turned off etc. and other settings that drains the battery. I still use the same settings even to this day. I use my phone like my gaming laptop or any laptop when I drain the battery and use it heavily and I only get 2 hours of battery on my gaming laptop or any laptop before it says low battery.
Replaceable battery and 200-300 watt charging will be an imteresting combination with glass back. xD

10 years ago.... this is the life.... it's dies....pop the back and back to 100 with your 3rd party battery that are "compatible" with your phone
It's GOOD news; it's about time that somebody taught APPLE 🍎🍏 a LESSON.
In Norway,if the battery is not easy replaceable by the user, the battery must last a minimum of 5 years. If it does not, the owner can demand it repaired. If that not possible a replacement or money back must be given.
This is called reklamasjon.

I’ve also heard they changed the law now it’s just if your phone can stay at a certain battery health for 2 years it got to be replaceable
Maybe you were a kid but old phone like 10 15 years ago they used to have removable batteries so cool now just like the good all days
Good for most of us. If you wanted your phone to be water resistant, you're out of luck, and so are all those entities tracking your location after you remove the battery.
Increase complexity. Man we all had removable batteries back in the day.
