Man, I miss the ol' F59PHI's on the Amtrak Cascades... Them and the F40PH's were a real sight to behold. Now, it's the SC44 Chargers with the F40's being converted to NPCU power. Still nice to see them though, despite their new usage.

Having said that, back in 2004 I was on a chartered train heading north along Puget Sound on the evening of July 4. As we rolled along, we were pacing a Trident class ballistic missile submarine off to our west. It ultimately out paced us and sailed away.
      Incredible!

I appreciate this episode. My family origins were Richmond Beach and Edmonds. As kids we flattened coins on the track at Richmond Beach. My grand uncle, Theron McKelroy owned what's now the Cabin Tavern across the street from the tracks. I later grew up in Magnolia Bluff over the hill from the Interbay switching yard. You could hear the sound of cars crashing together in the early AM hours of the summer while they made up trains. My old turf, so to speak.

I worked on the BNSF NW division for several years a while ago as a switchman, did most of my yard work at balmer in seattle and delta in everett. These scenes brings back a lot of fun (and bad) memories. Thanks for sharing.

Great stuff from from a great variety of locations. The westbound intermodal, with the 737 Max fuselages, was BNSF train symbol Q ALTPTL. (Alliance, TX - Portland). It picks up the Boeing cars in Colorado, including oversized component cars for wide-bodied aircraft. Those cars are set-out in Everett. The fuselage cars are set-out at. Interbay(old school), where the “Renton Rocket” (BNSF local) will haul those cars to the Boeing Renton assembly plant. The Q ALTPTL will set-out a block of cars at South Seattle before heading onward to Portland. That symbol runs 3 days per week.

Very familiar area to me. Born in Tacoma, raised in Everett, and hung around the tracks (mainly Delta Yard) whenever I got the chance. Never heard of that one area being called Japanese Gulch though. Dug for clams right in that area and Howarth park, swam in the bay, and fished plenty too. I can still hear the bang of cars being humped in Delta yard in the middle of the night, some times very loud.

We're a great big rollin railroad
    One that everybody knows
We were born of gold and silver spikes
    A hundred years ago
We're a million miles of history
    A-shinin in the sun
    We're the Union Pacific
    And our story's just begun
From the great plains of Nebraska
    To the California seas
From the summits of the Rockies
    To the mighty redwood trees
We're a thousand wheels of freight train
    Hear the diesel engines' power
    We're the Union Pacific
    Doin ninety miles an hour
    Bound from Omaha to Portland
    Through Cheyenne and Laramie
We're a headed west for Boise
On the mainline to the sea
Cross the flats at Salt Lake City
    On to Vegas and LA
    We're the Union Pacific
And we've got the right of way
From the green fields of the prairie
    To the blue Pacific shore
    We deliver your great cargo
And come rollin home for more
On the backbone of our nation
You can see us make the climb
    We're the Union Pacific
And we're gonna be on time
From the green fields of the prairie
    To the blue Pacific shore
    We deliver your great cargo
And come rollin home for more
On the backbone of our nation
You can see us make the climb
    We're the Union Pacific
And we're gonna be on time.
