Now with 4014 containing its own PTC systems in the current 3985 tender, I can imagine the tender swap requiring the actual 4014 tender to be equipped with the same. Nice that they keep making great progress though.

    • @ncwitwisconsinaffiliate1818

I thought they were going to swap tenders back. If the 4014 still has the 3985 tender and the electronics were placed in the 3985 tender, then I don't think there will be a swap since the 3985 with some tender has been transported to Silvis Illinois.

I think the 4014 is the test bed for PTC on Steam. CPKC did something similar for the 2816. Keep in mind the 3985 was already converted to oil so it made sense to use the 3985 tender to keep the restoration on schedule since the 844 needed more work than anticipated for the 150th Golden Spike anniversary

The diesel was basically to help with providing electricity to the cars, and because it had PTC - Positive Train Control. The old steamers didn't have it, as it wasn't required in their day. They've added PTC to 4014, and I believe an additional steam-powered generator for increased electrical power.

From the Federal Railroad Administration website: Positive Train Control (PTC) systems are designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments, incursions into established work zones, and movements of trains through switches left in the wrong position.
