  • Childhood memories can be really difficult to declutter. Today I deal with this topic and I help my grandma to start decluttering on her house.

    Love this! I have a 6-year-old son and I save EVERY single thing for him but only on the cloud, not physically. So he won’t ever receive a big box of photos, art projects, cards, invitations, school papers, and certificates, but he will have access to all of them through email and he can sift through his entire history divided by year and carry it with him everywhere, even if he chooses to live out of a backpack.

    I used to keep all of those childhood things and then one day I threw away all of it. Everything. I used to be very nostalgic, but when I made up my mind I really let go of all of it mentally. If I remember something nice from childhood in the future, then great. If forget things then I don't mind that either. I don't want to live in the past.

    When i was at school. Our grade sat in a big circle and we had a stack of note paper each and an envelope. We wrote our name on the envelope then passed it 10 spaces. The idea was, when you got the envelope of a classmate, you were to anonymously write something good about them and pop it into their envelope. Once done we had an envelope full of postive things others thought about us. We were encouraged to keep it as we moved through life and any time we felt down, to pull it out and go through it to see how many people thought good things about us. To me though, it reminded me of school and i have nothing positive to say about school, so I purged it. Trophies, gone. All school photos, gone. Anything to do with school, gone. Objects bring memories. When close loved ones die, the small objects become cherished. A photo, a love note, keep those if they bring fondness, discard them if they bring sorrow. A photo of a photo is not quite the same, depending on the volume of course. I have a small biscuit tin for these extra precious tangible items. And a small lolly tin with USB thumb drives of images etc. This works for me.

    I got my family really into decluttering this summer because I was home to have yardsales haha. I just had my stuff but each time they would decide that they did have a few items to declutter and look through, even found very old stuff that just had to go to the trash...I'm proud of them for doing that and yeah you can't really force it on people...leading by example really helps tho. Or just being their for the man power, sometimes they just fell lazy to do it until someone's their to help. 😊

    • @minimalou_yt
      @minimalou_yt  Месяц назад +1

      Yes that’s exactly that for my grandsparents too, for example they can be lazing about gardening so I’ll do it myself and when they see me working in their garden they come and help 👩🏼‍🌾 It’s about showing the good example, and you definitely are doing a good thing with helping your family to declutter ☀️

    Thank you for sharing! I totally agree. My mother is quite the hoarder. She also has a tendency to leave things in piles around. When I visit, I just help her clean, but have not forced anything. Once I clean, the space feels better. By the way, your grandparents are adorable.

    I was very lucky to have married already when it came time to visit my family home where I needed to declutter my childhood items. My husband at the time didn't have any attachment to things and because we lived far away, I couldn't take everything back with me. I was able to show him my life as a younger person and even though I wanted to hang on to many things, he was able to show me that it was unnecessary. After the declutter, I had no regrets! Thank you so much for showing us your own personal journey and I hope we get to see more of your grandparent's home declutter!

    A good video with sweet memories from your childhood. Ive always been a slow declutterer- frequently, little by little. I ve had 4 children, & Im glad i've kept some childhood things from my own childhood, as my childten have enjoyed looking through some of it, especially at the same age as I was.

  • @brooke1692

    It’s crazy to me how similar I find your life to mine. Similar in age, lifestyle, also childless with similar grandparents (holding onto items) and similar in the activities we did when young and love for animals as kids. This video inspired me to prioritize declutterring my childhood things at my parents house in Ohio. I have a lot of medals, too. Anyways, I enjoy watching your videos because I like knowing there are other people, our age, who value minimalism. Over consumption is the norm where I live (United States, specifically Florida). Thank you!

      We could have been best friends 😄🏇🏼☀️ I have been once in the US, in Miami, and yes the overconsumption is overwhelming, but most of my subscribers are Americans so I hope to develop a minimalist community here to make a small change in the US after each video… 💭😌

    I laughed when you showed the Pokemon cards because, well, two things... 1. I grew up with horses and LOVE horses too (in particular, Arabians - that's what my horse is) and 2. I only collected the cards with horses/ponies and Pikachu cards as well 🤣 Never any others. Seeing you do the same thing literally made me laugh out loud! Also, I love how you said that keeping all of the materials is a choice. It truly is. My parents are very similar to your grandparents and they keep everything. I am the complete opposite.. everything I own serves a purpose. I'm loving your channel! 💙

    It seems to me that you were a minimalist even as a child. 😊 You started with two boxes that I ended with after my childhood memories declutter. 😅I had so many things that I decided that I will keep only what fits in two boxes. You just inspired me to go through them again and keep only one box for now. I am good in getting rid of things, but it is so hard to part with childhood memories. You did a great job with gently helping your grandma declutter. 💖

    I thing i heard the other day to get started, was a 30 day challenge where each day represents a single item to discard. Day 1 do 1 item, day 2 do 2 items, day 3 do 3 items and so on. And jot it down as you go. You can get many days from one drawer for example. By the end you have done 465 items. Then have a break or start another 30 day challenge.

    I love how gentile you are with your elderly family members. Unf, it was not my case, when my dad were out for a day, I had to take control out of the balcony because I was really scared that it was a risk of a fire, there were some in my area just bc of the tons of the junk they were put there &forget about it. I declutter &cleaned the bathroom, the entrance space, the kitchen, &many more. there were no chance I will ever convince him to just get rid of all that garbage. He was back home, the place was clean, of course he mourned all that sh.t, but what can I do more? He had no idea what was there bc he never use those spaces &he will never know how many tons or at least hundreds of kilograms of random sh.t I took from the apartment &got rid of. Those were not even memories, I will never destroy photos of him or documents, I dont know the words in En for what garbage was there, but I had to do something. I cant let a fire just start in the middle of the night or when we r not at home just bc he store garbage all the time. and all the time, little by little, small declutter he dont even notice.

    i got rid of most of my things from childhood in my 20s because i didn't care about them and the memories were still very fresh for me. Plus my parents threw out a bunch of my stuff without my permission. a lot of the stuff was handmade by family or close friends who have now passed away. and some of it was pictures of people (before digital cameras were a thing!). Twenty years later, my memories of the people I've lost are fading and i greatly mourn the loss of the things that I associated with them. i now very much regret getting rid of some of it because I cannot rely on my memories anymore. have you ever gotten rid of something and regretted it later?

    • @minimalou_yt
      @minimalou_yt  Месяц назад +2

      No I never regretted anything that I had decluttered because I’m not attached to the physical objects, but I am sure glad now we have digital cameras so my photos can live in the cloud, that’s for sure. ❤️

    Cute - I got the French horse books for my daughters way back, we had a grey Bouvier bernois (my daughter kept his collar!) and a Haflinger pony, and the youngest (nearly 29) had a big Diddl collection - and we kept toys in an Ikea box just like that... the 1990s!!

    Great video! Right now I only have one (big) box of memories, but I know for sure I could make it just a small box. I know I have school photos, a small photo album, some drawings and a little stuffed animal (cat) that I am not getting rid of. Other than that, I am not sure what I have in it and will probably declutter. Some of the photos/drawings I will probably take a photo and declutter but not all, for now.
