    Is your car burning or consumption oil? Does it smoke or have low power under acceleration? I suggest you do a compression test to check the health of the engine. If you have low compression on one of the cylinder, it can cause the exhaust to smoke and have low power. In our case, I was checking for oil consumption. Take a look at the spark plugs, if they are all clean, most likely the engine is not burning oil. Otherwise, if one spark plug is black and covered with carbon build-up, that is the cylinder that has the problem.
    My Story: I bought a lemon BMW 325i E90 with the N52 engine that burned so much oil, it could have been a fish in a previous life. After diving in and researching how to fix the oil consumption issues [check video playlist below] I started by changing the Crankcase Ventilation Valve (CCV) which did not help our oil burning issue. So now we check the compression to see if the engine is healthy.

    Valvetronic technology was introduced by BMW on 2004 with their N52 engine, so that basically means you can apply this method on all BMW till 2004 year of production on naturally aspirated engines like M62B44, M52B28TU, M54B30, and so on

    N52 compression test requires using an allen key onto the valvetronic motor in order to turn the eccentric shaft to a closed degree so that all cylinders are in a sealed position, otherwise you ll get false readings.

      @@buildanddrive it's in this fucking program ISTA+

    • @hanynowsky
      @hanynowsky 8 месяцев назад

      @@buildanddriveyes it s in ISTA+.
      The procedure is very easy.
      Plug your scanner, display the eccentric shaft angle. Normally engine off, it s 58 or 68 degrees. Unplug the eccentric shaft actuator motor socket, and with an allen key turn the actuator until your scanner display 176 degrees. Then you can start testing compression.
      Unplug the injectors harness. Remove the sparg plugs and coils as you did and test compression by the firing order 153624.
      Your compression tool hose must have a shredded valve. Other wise it will loose pressure at each crank.
      Scanners like INPA, ISTA, Protool, BimmerLink, DeepObd can display the E-shaft angle.

    I bought the same compression tester. I was so mad when I opened it up and the different valve sizes weren’t actually marked on the box so I looked at the directions and it had everything labeled so I labeled them my self with a marker next to their spots in the box lol. I was so irritated. 😂🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

    I have low compression on n52b25, aprox 85 psi on each cyllinder, it consume 1l/1500 km. How could it even running and how long it will last my engine ?

    • @buildanddrive
      @buildanddrive  6 дней назад

      That doesn't sound right. Are you sure you compression tested the engine correctly? Does the car have trouble starting when cold? Follow these instructions, make sure ALL spark plugs are removed when cranking. Test it without and then add a little bit of oil to the cylinders and compare the values. If the same... Do a leak down test to check. ruclips.net/video/v0gH8dFyWH8/видео.html

      @@buildanddrive I followed your steps from the beginning, I removed all spark plugs, I set the valvetronic to 176 degrees, I did an wet test and the results are a little bit higher, around 105 psi except cyllinder 3 which was still on 80 psi... My car is starting without struggling, only problem is that I have rough idle few seconds, after I cleaned spark plugs, that tough idle disappeared, another thing is that I have cats error on almost every time , is during a little bit after I clean error code to reappear again.Is strange even for me , because I can run pretty fast, the engine revs at the max RPM without struggling, I go even with 200 km/h on highway.
      Could be possible to be a timing chain problem, valvetronic or a headgasket?I really don't understand, for this compression my car should smoke oil on exhaust like a diesel but mine doesnt smoke ...
      P.S. I used exact the same Compression tester like yours.

    Thanks for clear videos. I'm buying used N52 , i chacked 4 used engines in and out of cars. wondering why all the 4 engines 4 or 5 cylinders had 30-40PSI compression but 1-2 cylinders 160-170PSI. i tried to turn the Valvetronic by hand and the result was still the same. 3 engines no oil but one with oil. still, i cannot understand was this broken engine or related to valvetronics or Vanos? any idea please?

      Is it the n52b25? I noticed when my engine was almost dead that the oil was burning so fast that the digital oil guage could not keep up. That's when the oil would run out and blow a cylinder

  • @hanynowsky

    Man. Get yourself ISTA.
    The procedure of testing compression in a valvetronic engine is different.
    You need an allen key! Turn the eccentric camshaft motor (VVL motor) untill valves are closed then you can start your compression test.
    Without Doing this, your compression test is incorrect and useless.
    After 100.000 Kms or a little bit earlier, N52 and N52k piston oil rings get clogged with carbon especially if the engine has been running lean for a while or suffered from overheating once.
    BMW was aware of that problem but only released the fix at a very late date.
    The updated version of pistons and rings fixes the oil consumption issue.
    However I have seen some N52s reaching 300k Kms with no oil consumption whatsoever.
