BW Stevenson was one of the most beloved country singers of my lifetime. His version of My Maria was inspired by the Heavens. Everyone else's version is just a homage, and they all know it.
Jim Gordon was a great session drummer in the 60's and 70's, played on nearly every hit song, just amazing drummer. However, his life spiraled out of control due to mental illness, and he murdered his mother and spent the rest of his life in a prison medical ward. Gordon was also the drummer in the band Derek and the Dominos.
Jimmy was one of the greats. Session drumming legends Jeff Porcaro and Jim Keltner both said that Jim was the greatest drummer they ever knew. Such a tragic life. RIP Jimmy.
@@jonathanoverholts2036 And RIP to his poor innocent mother! Beat her with a hammer and then stabbed her ti death with a butcher knife. I can only imagine the poor woman's pain and horror in that moment.
Louis Charles B.W. Stevenson (the B.W. stood for Buckwheat). Great song. When it came out the radio stations kids listened to didn't much care what "genre" a song fit in. If it was catchy, they played it. I read that this is now considered "progressive country" or "country rock". You reacted to McArthur Park, and they played that on the same station where we heard the Beatles and the Beach Boys and Roy Orbison, along with B.W. Stevenson. Thanks for another great reaction to a great song!
What you said is true ! The radio station that I listened to as a kid when I was eating breakfast played all kinds of music 🎵🎶 The Beatles then this song, My Maria then maybe the Four Seasons. We loved all kinds of genres! ❤❤
Like so many singers, he died young. But, he wrote several songs that were covered by others over the years. I remember when this song came out is was a huge hit! So glad you two reacted to this incredible song!
Great song! I remember this original of "My Maria" by B. W. Stevenson in 1973. I was not familiar with the Brooks & Dunn version which was done later. Austin Brown & Tim Foust (from Home Free) also did a great cover of this song recently.
Nice song. His only hit. Guitar by the great Larry Carlton, who collaborated with everyone from Dolly Parton and Andy Williams, to Joni Mitchell and Linda Ronstadt. He's also known for the guitar solo in Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne"
The song "Shambala" was sung by BW Stevenson but the band Three Dog Night made it into a big hit. There is part of the Melody that is similar to "My Maria." If you haven't reacted to 3 Dog Night's "Shambala" you must!
Brooks and Dunns remake was good but this original was just better. BW’s voice is just bigger and more full. The drummer also did an excellent job driving the song. Great reaction you two.
@@flerbus yes, it was Dave Loggins who wrote and also recorded the song, but B. W. Stevenson actually released his version of the song about a month or so before Dave did. The Stevenson version was very popular…
Love this! Takes me back to growing up in the 70’s 😁 This song was a hit in the early 70’s. We listened to everything! The radio top 40 for a given week would have Doobie Brothers next to Glen Campbell next to John Lenon next to Al Green next to Aerosmith next to Diana Ross next to......BW Stevenson!! 😁
My high school music teacher ('74-'75) had gone to high school with BW, and in mixed chorus we sang much of his catalog, including Shambala. I sang this song competitively, and took it to state placing 3rd at the state competition. The Brooks & Dunn version changed very little of BW's arrangement due to how perfect this arrangement is. RIP BW...gone too soon.
OMG, you really need to know the 70's to know how funny this is! She's talking about yodeling (70's code for oral, yodeling in the canyon). And listening to it in the shower, etc. She can't even get the grin off of her face! God bless them both. Good song
Hey guys, would love for you to react to a great 70's smooth soft rock song and its called Suavecito by Malo... the clearest one to hear is with the Aztec warrior holding a woman in his arms... it's smooth and romantic and yes it's in English, great hit...
There's a current version of this song playing on the FM alternative stations..Funny thing is, it sounds just like BW's version. I've always liked it because I had a hot Latina girlfreind named Maria once, but I couldn't get her to live here with me in the states and I was In Mexico on a 90 guest pass...(sigh) The best 3 months I've ever had.
So. Will be singing along on the chorus... Well! Thank you! Just a little C&W in it. Guess one would have to train. Hey, there's a live version of The Band song "Up On Cripple Creek", where Levon Helm sings something like " I sure wish could yodel like a ..". Worth checking out. Lyrics are fine in this tune as well. Lol! Rico- wha?. Thanks.
Sing along with a song with yodeling in it sometime, it's actually quite easy as the human voice throws those rapid changes in pitch in our speech all the time without even thinking about it. 😁
Dug this very good song back then, still do. Don't remember any other songs by him maybe a one hit wonder. That's fine with me, many very good one hit wonders 60 & 70s.
@@AsiaandBJ Oh! Thank you so much! I was worried :) Everyone needs a break! I've been busy also with the summer travel season! I hope to see both of you soon! xoxoxo

I agree. This is the best by far.
If I have any criticism at all of this song, it's too short!
Most people may not know this but the drummer on this track is the late Jim Gordon, (Cream, Eric Clapton, "Layla", Joe Cocker, etc)

Agreed! She's awesome. 😎

One of my FAVORITE tracks from the 70s. Nice fusion of country and soft rock. Hits it out of the park………..
BW Stevenson was originally from Oak Cliff in Dallas.
Great song. love you guys. Asia, you are painfully beautiful!
Shambala was another great song he performed ❤️❤️ BW did a great job 👏👏 give it a listen 😉✌️
Like so many singers, he died young. But, he wrote several songs that were covered by others over the years. I remember when this song came out is was a huge hit! So glad you two reacted to this incredible song!
Stevenson was from Dallas and is buried in Laurel Land Cemetery in Dallas, as is Stevie Ray Vaughn
B W Stevenson was a native of Dallas, Texas where you guys are Asia and BJ.
Recorded in 1972. 51 years ago. How time flys. Have to listen to Shambala.
❤ I absolutely LOVE this song & Stevenson's voice. 😀
Yes, a manly voice with great range

I only knew Brooks and Dunn remake apparently but it was my fave ever of theirs. Never realized it was a remake Wow this version is great I loved it 🥰
Great lead vocal by Stevenson. Great range & tone of voice from low to high.

Lucky 7th me.... the 70's definitely had some great music...which I didn't realize at the time....I was 10 in 70'
Great song, Brooks and Dunn covered it and did a great job on it
That's what most people know is that version
They didn't do anything different on it.
RB Grieves put out a song called …. Take a letter Maria. Came out around the same time. Even better
B.W. was from Dallas Texas.....Oak Cliff I believe.
While attending Lamar U, my brother and myself saw him at "Mama's Worry." RIP Peace Buckwheat.

Great drumming by Jim Gordon great session drummer who also a member of Derek and The Dominos.
Graduated highschool when this song was a hit. BW Stevenson also recorded Shambala which Three Dog Night put out first.
And Please Come To Boston… one of my favorites. So poignant…

Brooks and Dunn redid this song. Great song.
Yes! Even better than the original. 👍
Austin Brown & Tim Foust sing "My Maria" as well.
BW’s version is the best . B and D version is good but not the best
BW rules

Stevenson died following heart valve surgery after developing a staph infection at the age of 38.
Brooks and Dunn did a cover of this and its GREAT as well!❤❤
1972.......Corpus Christi, Texas. I was 18. Got to hear this song, DECADES before Brooks and Dunn made a killin' off it...haha. He was good
Great song, always move me to a BIG SMILE .... Thank You Both, Let Muise Play On. 🙂
I've always loved this song. The only problem for me is that it's too darn short. I always wish it would go on for a few more verses.
This deserves 💯 points out of 10‼
Another great song choice. A good soulful, cross-over country/rock tune that sounded great coming out of an AM radio in the '70's.
Just like other reaction videos to this song…..as soon as the vocals start…..you get it!

Roy Rogers the King of the Cowboys was one of the best yodelers ever!

Brooks and Dunn does a great cover of this and it's longer. R Dunn voice is great....
