    Solid detailed advice as always Mark! 👍 Here in central AZ we get hummingbirds all year, but the activity and variety of them REALLY cranks up around mid-April. Love this time of the year when everything comes alive!

    Mark, I saw my first hummingbird at one of my feeders this morning - April 8th! Saw it several times during the day and again in the evening. North/Middle Tennessee near Westmoreland. This is the earliest I've seen them here. So glad I already had a couple of my feeders out. Hopefully my flowers will be blooming soon. My last frost date is later on. Still having nights in the high 30s.

    Thanks, Mark! Support everything you recommended 11:49 . I have made mistakes
    In the past I keep learning every year what not to do! I have learned that leaving old banana peels out on the mulch in the flower beds attracts Nats and makes a nice feeding for the hummers. I'm ready for them this year to show about April 15th. I have several feeders and clean 1/2 of them every two days in the summer. Also learned that 1/2 cup per feeder is plenty.

    7:00 that is the WORST hummingbird feeder. I offered to watch out for my friends hummingbird feeder when he went on vacation & this was the one he had; it was disgustingly dirty. [I did pull the entire thing apart & cleaned it.] He wondered why no hummingbirds had been visiting but came after he returned. I will be sharing this video with him. Thank you for saying all of this!!

      I agree. The problem is it is cheap and sold everywhere. Education is key, thanks for sharing the video.

    What is the tongue reach of the smaller hummingbirds? I am in Northern Utah. I worry that if I don't put enough in my top (flat) feeders they won't be able to reach it. so how far down can they reach. One inch?

    • @MarksBackyardBirds
      @MarksBackyardBirds  5 месяцев назад

      At least the same length as bill. They can place the tip of the bill in the feeder so the reach would be that length again. Calliope’s are the smallest and have a relatively short bill so not much more than an inch or two.

    Guess I better think about them. Buzzards, Tree swallows and Flickers showed up today on the north shore of the UP.

    Besides hummingbirds, I have Carolina wrens nesting but my mom keeps gardening non stop evening time Becuase it’s too hot for her during the morning and day . Even I do love to garden my mom will garden non stop till night . Anyway In the evening time the female came out of nest Becuase we were gardening and when it was night time the male started tweeting Becuase it was getting night time but we were still gardening, I was ready to go inside but my mom still garden till it got all the way till dark. So the female wren never made it back to its nest. Will they come back in the morning?

    Now is there people who only want humming bird feeders and nothing else?

      I only want humming birds and finch. But get others more than finch

      It is very hard to do something to discourage other birds from humming bird feeders that will not discourage the hummingbirds.
