The cutsenes of this game scared the living crap out of me as a kid. I only remember getting past the first boss. I remember that my dad finished the game though.
Dude my memories are exactly like yours! I think my dad didn't get to finish the game though, because it wasn't ours, he traded it for a few days probably.
Yeah I was scared too, it brought me nightmares when I've seen it, I wonder if any kid now gets those feelings if they play this game, the fear in the first cutscene (well it wasn't the good part if you ask me)or the excitement we had for this game back to these days... Whatever computers could't create back to these days, our imagination could...if you know what I mean. Im feeling lucky that I was born this times, there are many things that kids now won't come accross because they have their fancy 1080p games now...
@@stefanos64 i was borned in the early 2000 but i had the lucky to fell many good games like zelda TTP and skyward sword aswell metroud prime trilogy on all my 720 Pixel tv monitor and my wii i was lucky of this cause few years later game industry turned out in an bloody bloated monsters of microtransations premium pass and loot boxes....
True respect who ever has uploadee this. I love this game in my childhood in Dubai I had a cacet. Man this music loved batman and still do... Super hero
Looks like a very decent game for NES. However, it was released when my attention in that time was already focused into the 16- bit videogames. Because of this, I never knew about this one. Thanks for sharing!
Finally I found this game! I remember I used to try and badly fail at playing this game when I was less than 5 years old. I never made it past the first boss so I'm really looking forward to seeing this play out!
Never played this game on the NES, I had the Genesis version which was completely different. I only learned about this one because it had the same composer as Mega Man 2. Great music from an amazing video game composer.
Megaman 2 and 3 music themes also where so great! That makes sense Dude! I didn't know that.... Also the mega man that the younger children nowadays listened to, liked the musical themes very much!!!
The "item get" sound sounds like the one from the NES Castlevania games, and I've heard people say even the death jingle heard in Castlevania (I) and Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse is also recycled here. You gotta love Konami...
What a great game (that is BALLS hard)! Konami, man... they've left an amazing legacy. I love how the bikers keep running faster than their bikes, when exploded.
Thank you so much for sharing this -- due to the popuarlity of the SNES Batman returns game, this (arguably superior) game is seriously underappreciated online. Most 'History of Batman game' lists miss out on this one. Thanks for posting this! My whole childhood prior to the release of the adv. of batman & robin on SEGA was spent on this.
alxxpspqr That's a very good observation regarding the TMNT 2 engine -- and you're right the graphics alone suggest that. I am a fan of the music though, the rather foreboding and cold theme perhaps resonates with my earliest memories too much to suggest a forgotten world, haha. I remeber the NES and SNES versions as well, not too fan of Return of the Joker but they all prove one thing; The awesomeness of the Batman video-game franchise!
alxxpspqr Well the critical success of later Batman games do qualify it as 'awesome.' As for a forgotten world, haha yes perhaps I could've phrased it better -- but what I meant was that its music was very evocative of the Batman Returns movie. Thanks!
I remember thinking this looked soooo good back there (so much so that it took me a while just now to adjust to what the NES graphics really looked like!) Still, awesome game, and the "cutscenes" look really nice for 8bit
I remember that my parents bought me once a bootleg disc with a TON of NES ports for my PS1 as a very little young kid, and found my mother playing this (she loves the Batman things) and then I give it a shot. It was a lot of fun in a nice afternoon. Shamefully, I don't know where my PS1 is; I lost it like 10 years ago. Maybe my parents sold it to give me my next console wich was a XBOX 360.
Oddly enough, there is a pirated cart of this. It's called Batman III and I don't know where it was sold, But it's just this game with an edited title screen, no story demo and missing its Konami license.
Bron-Yr-Aur House I had it as a child. It was one of my first NES cartridges ever. The first logo at start up isnt the Konami but 1993 written, also it has the story demo and everything else is the same. My cartridge had the Batman Forever movie poster on it with Batman 3 written on top.
I also had it as a kid and I didn't remember the title was "Batman III" until reading these comments. My cartridge was yellow and the sticker was actually a Batman Returns promo picture, although badly cropped
Well, the composer is the same composer of Megaman 2, Takashi Tateishi. No wonder it sounds familiar Also, some tracks are composed by guitarist and sound programmer Shigemasa Matsuo, who's part of the guitar circle Night and Day
When I get high and watch these games I played as a 7 year old its like travel through time...Sometimes I even remember memorise I thought I have lost long time ago :) Anyway thanks for the videos
12:22 I'm not sure how well known it is, but those cats (at random intervals) actually have a chemical weapon that makes the fight with Catwoman a lot easier (much like the movie)
I remember me as a kid when my father came back from a trip (he was a truck driver) and he bring this game to me and than I start playing but it was so hard for me that time. Than my uncle start playing the game with me and helped me , but we never passed from Cat Woman. God old times!
I remember this game was quite hard in later stages. After so many years I still recall the circus organ player boss fight because I died so many times.
I had played Batman games (this one and the first part from Sunsoft) before I watched movies and it was shock for me when I saw Burton's Batmans... I was like "wtf, the same things were in the game" :D And this is what I love about NES games based on movies, they didn't change the plot, for me it was great to play Batman, Robocop, Terminator, etc and then to look for similiarities and references
and one of the last good batman games before they began to dish out the crappy ones based on the horrendous Joel Schumacher movies... Thank goodness Christopher Nolan came and gave the movie franchise the proper comeback it needed, while the games did get better (even though the Arkham series are original stories)
I'm with ya there. The SNES game, like many others, have that 'underwater' sound. So everything blends in and gets bland quickly. Whereas the NES had some catchy beats. Plus, doesn't hurt I'm nostalgic as crap to the nes version. Then with how hard the bosses are, that boss music always brought fear to me. Nothing compares to the Mega CD version music though xD
alxxpspqr A low pass filter wouldn't typically increase the quality in sound. All that does, is cut off higher frequencies you don't want played. So say you don't have a tweeter on your speaker, its good to cut off with a low pass filter around 12khz or so. I'll agree though! All those games have great soundtracks. But they all also have this 'underwater' disctinct sound to them too. Some games like mario world don't have it at all. Others like batman returns, I dunno. It drives me nuts nowadays xD May not bother anyone else
I know this game had some secret rooms because I found them by accident. Doesn't anyone remember them? I forgot how to find them. Just like Separation Anxiety / Maximum Carnage (Genesis)
This, Return of the Joker and the unlicensed Batman and Flash one are only three NES Batman games that I came across to play em. 2-1 and 5-1 stages theme are ma favourite. I personally enjoyed this game a little more than Ninja Turtles NES game series(those are great too👍) A great played by Valis77 and memorable NES Batman Returns video from World of Longplays youtuber 👍.
i was always stuck on lvl 3-1 after i ear-dropped the mayor, i endlessly walked on the street, it was like a loop. no window did even open the second time. i guess my cartridge was broken.
A few years ago, i decided to play through this game for the first time, I had only played about 2 levels in before. But the game crashed on the organ grinder boss. Now I decided to try again, and now I can't beat the organ grinder because he's too difficult. If only the game would have crashed after a few attempts and not the first time fighting him then I wouldn't have bothered to try again.
While it looks interesting and potentially good, it also kinda looks like one of the TMNT games, just re-skinned. The gameplay seems to be almost exactly like TMNT 2 & TMNT 3

It's hilarious how much this plays like a TMNT game. The clowns even throw punches just like a Foot Soldier.
Never passed the freaking duck when I was a kid. Thank you for taking me to the end of this game. Definitely one of the best nes games.

James on cinemassacre really needs to do a part 3 with all the batman games out there.

one of my favourites when I was a 9-year-old-kid along with ninja gaiden 2. still shiver me timbers when hear its music! good ol' days.

You are awesome! thank you for taking the time to do this! brings back good times!
Thanks for this memories! On stage 2 if you hit the eyes cat with your subweapon you get some items.
These were some of the best graphics for the NES back then.
What a great game (that is BALLS hard)! Konami, man... they've left an amazing legacy.

Music sounds like a mix between turtles 1, Castlevania games and tiny toon adventures ^^
u know you can hit that cat head in the eye it give you an item
I never knew that this came out for the Nes! Yes I still have Batman Returns for my Sega Genesis and Game gear! Wow! What an amazing soundtrack!

How would I know that the Bat Rope was also a weapon?
Kinda reminds me of Battletoads how the enemy goes flying with the final hit.
Konami did such a GREAT job in their 8-bit rendition of Batman here. And I thought Konami only did arcade games legit!😚
@HicksZ34 I was thinking the same thing! I loved the side-scrolling beat em up style of TMNT 2 and TMNT 3.
@HicksZ34 I'm late but I just wanted to say that they did with X Men and The Simpsons lol
@HicksZ34TMNT 3 is awesome since all of the turtles have their own unique special attacks as well. That can't be said for the other TMNT games.
Guess I have to start playing these games after 25 years again. So simple and fun!
WHAT . A . MASTERPIECE...

loved this game,climate and difficulty
I never knew there was a NES version made. It's fantastic!! Kind of like a Batman-themed Ninja Turtles The Arcade Game sequel.
So you don't know about TMNT 3 on NES, if you mention TMNT 2 the Arcade Game, rather than TMNT 3.
OMG great soundtrack.
Одна из лучших игр.
uno de los mejores juegos de batman lejos y que decir el soundtrack hermoso

great game with a great soundtrack

Why don't you use the rope to bring the items from cat's heads in stage II?

Yeah, same engine and all... but it is actually quite entertaining. Beat it twice back in the day. Not a bad game.

just look at the sega version of Batman; return of the joker
