I don't see why Bella Ramsey gets so much hate. She's pulling off Ellie really well. Also, you can clearly see the freak out when she realizes she was bitten it was actually better than the game and people say she is a bad actor.

My only complaint of the slight change here is if Riley was stationed in the mall wouldn’t you clear out the entire mall first. Riley should have found that Runner chilling in the store there. In the game Ellie and Riley just go to the mall for some fun Riley was not stationed there and the Runners came when they herd the music. Overall it’s a very small nit pick too a great episode

Later, when Joel asks if she wants to talk about it, Ellie refuses because it’s painful for her. It wouldn’t make sense for Ellie to compare shooting a person with killing an infected.

One thing I really liked about the episode is the merry-go-round scene the song that's playing is a rework of The Cure - Just Like Heaven. On one hand it's signalling their perfect little date that's happening but also as the running theme of the show being an 80s song is also foreshadowing the danger that's coming.

I knew people who didnt play the game would think Ellie being into girls would be “slipped in” as a 2023 lesbian agenda thing. Nope, shes been that way since the beginning. Stop expecting the show to be the walking dead. That show ran its course and it got old. This is doing something different, it has characters with feelings, and pasts.

@@minafrotarules1232 I gotta disagree with you. It showed Ellie getting to be a kid, out of the setting of that oppressive FEDRA school. And it’s not pointless to the story. She loses the one person she cared about the most, and now she’s not gonna let it happen with Joel, no matter what it takes. And you’ll see how much it takes in the next episode. This show can’t just be action action action infected infected infected all the time because while that’s a lot of what the gameplay is, ultimately that isn’t what the story is about. Character development is part of the deal. The set design alone in this episode was incredible.
I just finished watching the episode and my eyes are completely raw from crying. I cried even harder than when I first played the actual DLC! I went in knowing they would have to cut and/or alter some things to fit a tv format but once again (just like for every single episode of this show so far) they somehow made it even better than in the game, AND THE GAME IS ALREADY A MASTERPIECE!!! Storm Reid played Riley *PERFECTLY* and Bella Ramsey is going to get a goddamn Emmy for this show🤞🤞. And when the theme for Left Behind kicked into full gear at the end of the episode when she was stitching Joel up I was broken.😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I also really loved the Mortal Kombat references in this episode because I love those games so much and believe it’s the best fighting games of all time. Also I really loved how Ellie and Riley’s fun moments with each other were so heartfelt and really felt like a calm before the storm just before the infected showed up.
Bella Ramsey is such fantastic actor and a perfect Ellie. Safe to say this is the best video game adaptation ever in my opinion. Every episode has been 10/10.
I definitely think she's done a better job than a lot of people expected her to. I mean, we knew she's a great actress, but a lot of people were concerned that her difference in appearance would take them out of it too much. While I think she's killing it for season 1, i cant help but keep thinking about Part II (since they keep making references to it) and I'm still having a really hard time imagining how she'll play Part II Ellie. I guess time will tell though
This episode was so beautiful and sad, loved the chemistry between Ellie and Riley i started crying as soon as i saw Joel's eyes tearing up looking at Ellie
Ellie and Riley’s relationship in this episode was simply brilliant. MKII ftw!!!! 7 episodes deep and Naughty D- I mean HBO still haven’t missed. I just finished the game last night and started the Left Behind part of the game before tonight’s episode. Really builds on Ellie’s story and character development both in game and show. Can’t wait for what’s next.
It was great seeing Ellie be able to have fun and just be a kid for a while. Lord I hope nobody freaks out over the kiss-it was charming to me. Next week is going to be brutal!
Another outstanding episode. The show can make actors who have one episode role to really shine and that's what happend with Storm's performance definitely
GOD literally every small tender moment they have together brought at least a tear to my eye knowing what was coming. Doomed love stories break my heart istg.
It was the hand squeeze that did it for me. I thought it was a very cool episode, but once he squeezed her hand, I just lost it and started balling. Just that little gesture means so much between them two in this world. Damn the acting and storytelling in this show is next level!

The fact that the show may follow some game that it’s based on also seems problematic. The scenery has been impressive! There hasn’t been a video arcade in existence like that since the early/mid 80’s…..also crappy writing.
The carousel ride where Eli was staring at Riley was a powerful moment, made so much more profound with the addition of the 'The Cure - Just Like Heaven' playing on the music box slowed
Great episode. The attention to detail in this show is really something special. I love the carousel scene. The music that's playing is the 80s hit and all time classic "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure. The slowed melancholy melody signals the bad that's about to come from this happy moment. Beautiful episode.
The rendition of Just Like Heaven by the Cure that plays during the carousel scene is so beautiful. Such a good romantic song for the moment, but also signalling the danger that is yet to come since it’s an 80s track.
Did y'all catch that while Ellie was staring at Riley on the Merry go round, that riley was doing the same through the mirror of the Merry go round, and Ellie didn't notice.. I was sobbing
Anyone else notice the use of a variation of just like heaven by the cure played on xylophone whilst they where on the carnival ride. A contuation of the 80s theme from take on me and really helped to put a picture of the feelings ellie had. Amazingly clever use of music throughout last of us.
GREAT EPISODE. I loved the connection between them and the callbacks to the games with the booth, arcade, etc. I got chills when ellie screamed no after being bit. Props to both of them but having not seen storm in anything before, she killed it! both of them! Although I wanted to see Ellie scream BRICK F ING MASTER 🤣
This episode was beautifully done! Storm was an amazing choice as Riley, she really knocked it out of the park and matched Bella's energy to a T. I can't believe it's almost over! 2 more episodes, David and Seattle. Really excited to see how they do David and translate his creepiness from game to show. Can't wait!
Only thing that bothers me about this episode is the fact that they didn't tie it with Valentine's Day, other than that, another strong and amazing episode! :D

@@minafrota6124 Oh no..how horrible. a show that's not really about zombies, but more about the relationships between PEOPLE, IN a post apocalyptic world. How dare they show the backstory of characters and how they got to where they are. How shameful to actually root for these characters...Keep crying. I love them tears.
This episode was fantastic (not a surprise, considering the previous ones, but still 😁). They have nailed pretty much everything so far, sad there's so little left. Weirdly, it started pouring rain where I'm at right before it was pouring outside Ellie's room 😅
The parts where they are acting uncautious while jumping across the buildings & being noisy, I love how they are rebelling in a sense...They have some control of their situation with a mindset of positive reinforcement while taking the drama as it comes. This is one of my favorite episodes, the slow burn was well worth it! I absolutely love how it all comes full circle...Ellie is going to make it her mission of not losing anyone close to her again.
Okay, so...fun thing that I noticed that might go overlooked and I really kind of need to share it: The carousel is playing a musicbox melody very close to The Cure's "Just Like Heaven". Why is this important? At least three reasons I can think of. First: It came out in 1987. *Eighties means trouble.* Second: It was written by The Cure. *Ellie is 'the cure' in The Last of Us.* Third: The lyrics of the song take on a different meaning in relation to the episode and how Ellie and Riley connect. It could almost be sung by Ellie herself in the present and be a fair approximation of how she feels about Riley now.
Honestly thought they were going to show them two up to the point where Riley turns and ellie doesn’t, ultimately leading to her hurting her first love
Such an amazing episode. Love every bit of it! It made me think and talk about what we take for granted. My mom and I talked about, the video stores, the magazines of games that I still have. The joy on Ellie her face as she sees the wonders of the mall. Absoluty amazing, the connection between Riley and Ellie, and Ellie and Joel. Listening to the podcast after watching the episode made me smile. This show is amazing. I love it so much❤️
As a non-LOU player, I thought this was my favorite episode of the season so far because of how much I could tell the writers, directors, and showrunners care about this show with the way they structured it. Seeing Ellie choose to save Joel in that moment when he tells her to go because of how she learned and seemingly-inherently valued making the moments we have count. You could see it on her face when she wanted to kiss Riley earlier on, but Riley didn't go for it yet. Ellie wants to acknowledge how we feel and what we want, and she's constantly tried to show Joel how important they are to each other throughout their journey and especially after episode 5 with Sam and Henry. Joel wants to push her away when he's dying and Ellie wants to hold on as long as possible, wants to fight on, just like Riley told her at the end of their journey
I’ve played the game so many times and it was amazing to watch in this episode. Even though I know what’s going to happen it’s still so sad to watch it play out and the performances were amazing. It’s a slower episode but still one of my favorite.
Storm was Perfect casting for Riley 🖤 Bella’s shock and anger after getting bitten was so good . I cried all over again especially when Pedro cried and then held hands with Bella ❤
So on the reaction rewatch, I thought it was really interesting how Ellie and Joel start their emotional fights with the passive aggressive “I guess we’ll find out”. I also still really like that Ellie is investigating the room and finds the firefly stuff when the answer to the pun is an investiGator
I think they should have kept the Firefly tags. The way Ellie says “don’t go” so Riley rips her tags off and throws them away without a word was much more impactful to me than just saying “okay”. I know we’re more familiar with the tags because they were collectibles, but I think they were self-explanatory enough to keep Riley’s.
Another incredible episode. I just want more. I keep saying it but damn I wish this season was 12 episodes. With only 2 left I’m excited and nervous whether they can wrap this up without it feeling too rushed.
I started crying when Joel squeezed Ellie’s hand. The writers managed to make me forget what happens with Ellie and Riley so I was so immersed in their cute relationship and then it hit me when I saw the infected. These episode keep getting better and better, I have full faith in them nailing the David arc, the finale and season 2
HOW HAVE I BEATEN THIS GAME A THOUSAND TIMES OVER AND STILL CRY EVEN WHEN I KNOW WHAT'S COMING?! The acting from this cast is absolutely freaking phenomenal! Those little tiny subtle movements like the arms around the waist, the hand holding, the eyes moving, the tiny smiles. It just builds the relationship that much more and it's damn intoxicating. This show is magnificent!
Amazing reaction guys. I had no idea that this was going to be a flashback episode, I'm definitely not complaining, it was emotional, heartwarming and beautiful. I will admit that I'm nervous about episode 8.
Liked the similarity with Joel being severely injured and telling Ellie to go north and Dinn Djarin severely injured and telling Cara Dune to take Grogu and go. Also now wondering after all these years that maybe the cure for infection wasn’t just with Ellie but with the infected that bit her. I also wondered why Ellie said “still Gross” when Joel gave her a swig of whiskey….this episode cleared that up.
Ellie and Riley going into a Macho Nacho was amazing. Why? In Uncharted 4, Elena brought up that she worked there when she was younger, much to Drake's amusement. Such a small Easter egg and I loved it lol
I thought Bella and Storm Reid were great. I really bought their chemistry, them hugging at the end while bitten accepting their fate hit me the same as it did in the game. Cannot wait for episode 8 with David.
Also cannot wait for us to meet David and Troy Baker’s character who’s supposedly playing David’s buddy James in next week’s episode. I hope Pedro’s Joel and Troy’s character meet in the show so then it’ll be the two Joels meeting lol. And if Pedro’s Joel kills Troy’s character, it’ll be looked at by fans as a brutal passing of the torch between the old Joel (Troy) and the new Joel (Pedro).
The placement of the flashback was perfect, going back to the last loss Ellie suffered reinforced her need to save Joel, Bella’s performance was spectacular, her reaction to the bite felt real, she’s nailing Ellie in every way.
Kinda cool how when Riley tells the "What do you call an alligator in a vest" joke the punchline is supposed to be "Investigator" as Ellie investigates her stuff.
The moment where cut back to Joel and he’s shivering/his teeth are chattering broke my heart. He’s probably cold because they’re in that freezing basement, and I imagine you can feel cold from loss of blood/a fever from infection…wish Ellie had given Joel her winter hat or an extra blanket. I was thinking, “Can we please bundle Pedro up a little more…he’s chilly!” 😢🥶
i hate the ppl that are nitpicking tiny details cause it’s not exactly like the game but this is an ADAPTATION FFS 🤦🏻♀️ the show is its own thing and should be treated as such. they’ve been VERY faithful to the game as well so idk ppl complain
The people here in the comment section are so much more chill than the other review I just came from. 10/10 loved Storm Reid as Riley, loved Riley and Ellie’s chemistry, loved the references/music from the game. All around very reminiscent of the DLC 💯
One thing I really liked about the episode is the merry-go-round scene the song that's playing is a rework of The Cure - Just Like Heaven. On one hand it's signalling their perfect little date that's happening but also as the running theme of the show being an 80s song is also foreshadowing the danger that's coming.
That version of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" was absolutely phenomenal. What a perfect song for that scene.

I loved that Ellie challenged Riley about the fireflies, and we got to see a bit of FEDRA as well.

The way the music flows with what’s happening is crazy good.
Yep. Great use of “The Choice” for a very different choice than what it accompanied in the game
Anyone else notice the use of a variation of just like heaven by the cure played on xylophone whilst they where on the carnival ride. A contuation of the 80s theme from take on me and really helped to put a picture of the feelings ellie had. Amazingly clever use of music throughout last of us.
Me! I didn't see a lot of reviews yet that mentioned the Cure cover ;)

Okay, so...fun thing that I noticed that might go overlooked and I really kind of need to share it:
The carousel is playing a musicbox melody very close to The Cure's "Just Like Heaven".
Why is this important? At least three reasons I can think of.
First: It came out in 1987. *Eighties means trouble.*
Second: It was written by The Cure. *Ellie is 'the cure' in The Last of Us.*
Third: The lyrics of the song take on a different meaning in relation to the episode and how Ellie and Riley connect. It could almost be sung by Ellie herself in the present and be a fair approximation of how she feels about Riley now.
Honestly thought they were going to show them two up to the point where Riley turns and ellie doesn’t, ultimately leading to her hurting her first love
This episode was a masterpiece. Ellie ❤️ Riley
Not me screaming “THIS IS SO ADORABLE I’M GONNA NEED THERAPY” for an hour straight!!!!!!😖😖😖😖😖😟😟
I’ve played the game so many times and it was amazing to watch in this episode. Even though I know what’s going to happen it’s still so sad to watch it play out and the performances were amazing. It’s a slower episode but still one of my favorite.
After his stellar performance last week, Pedro decided to just lay down on the job this week.
Storm Reid did a great job as Riley in this episode
Anyone else notice the Naughty dog paw on the captains keys?
I think they should have kept the Firefly tags. The way Ellie says “don’t go” so Riley rips her tags off and throws them away without a word was much more impactful to me than just saying “okay”. I know we’re more familiar with the tags because they were collectibles, but I think they were self-explanatory enough to keep Riley’s.
All I can say about this episode is WOW. Definitely got to win some awards this.
I think they filmed this in an abandoned mall. There’s lots of abandoned malls here in Canada so it would not surprise me if they did.
Another incredible episode. I just want more. I keep saying it but damn I wish this season was 12 episodes. With only 2 left I’m excited and nervous whether they can wrap this up without it feeling too rushed.
Give this girl an Emmy!

28:08 cat silently walking in back like Clicker😂
Also cannot wait for us to meet David and Troy Baker’s character who’s supposedly playing David’s buddy James in next week’s episode. I hope Pedro’s Joel and Troy’s character meet in the show so then it’ll be the two Joels meeting lol. And if Pedro’s Joel kills Troy’s character, it’ll be looked at by fans as a brutal passing of the torch between the old Joel (Troy) and the new Joel (Pedro).
Ashley Johnson too
The placement of the flashback was perfect, going back to the last loss Ellie suffered reinforced her need to save Joel, Bella’s performance was spectacular, her reaction to the bite felt real, she’s nailing Ellie in every way.
Kinda cool how when Riley tells the "What do you call an alligator in a vest" joke the punchline is supposed to be "Investigator" as Ellie investigates her stuff.
