You are so right…aging and routines likely at bit different for everyone, but at almost 67 I can do almost everything I used to…except not stretch. If I don’t stretch often (every day or second day) my back hurts. Similar stretching exercises that you showed and I find stretching my hip muscles key. Often if my back hurts and I stretch my hips the pain relief is almost instantaneous. For exercise in my case, I only avoid back squats (have found substitutes) and do keep my reps a little higher. When I’m feeling a bit beat my workout may be all bodyweight and or resistance bands/suspension work. On occasion I take an extra day between strength workouts. Last, I chose to drop 20lbs…strength almost the same, but I did lose size, however being leaner simply makes me feel better overall. It’s simple to lose weight, just not easy. Found simply counting calories and having a deficit every day did the job, but tough to stay that way…my diet habits still want to be that of a 20 year old! You continue to inspire everyone and appreciate you sharing your journey!

Every person is different, I've got over 20 years of wrestling, MMA, 8 years in the Marine Corps and 20 years of lifting. I fortunately have zero issues. I know Marines that have been in for 2 years or less and have chronic pain from the loads we carried. Not everyone is built the same and you need to listen to your body.

Hey Scooby! Still giving out awesome advice as always!
Similar to when I needed to buy more weight plates, I remembered you advice of "buy used", "your muscles don't care what kind of weights you use!" and the best advice "don't spend more than a dollar per pound".
I recently had to replace a 25lb plate that broke in half. Found a used replacement for $24. New plates are running for $44.
Feel free to laugh, but my fitness journey started with P90X. After a fellow Navy member introduced my to your channel, I've been sticking to my strength training regimen with the gear in my garage!
The fact you share your wisdom with no "buy my products!" or any other brand peddling and asking for money proves what a genuine guy you are!
We all wish nothing but great things thanks to your generosity

You are so right and myself I went from bodybuilding stage to hospital bed in less than one year. I competed in May 2023 at 65 years old at the Venice Muscle Beach Show and I had my right hip replaced September 2023. The surgery went well, however I still needed to get my left hip replaced to regain my mobility.
My left hip surgery was scheduled for this May, but in April I had a major medical emergency where I developed a blood clot in my lung that put me in the hospital for 5 days. The doctors told me about 30-40% do not survive an acute pulmonary embolism. The clot started as a Deep Vein Thrombosis in my left calf that broke off and I believe it was my fitness level that helped me to survive. I do not use PED's and all my heart vitals- pulse and blood pressure have been excellent for years.
Going forward I just want to get back my mobility and insurance that I will live a long life.
To the younger crowd please do not take your health for granted because as you get into your sixties you just never know what might happen. Also take care of your joints and do not lift heavy because you will most likely need a joint replacement sometime in your life!!

All of these people who want to get BIG dont understand the sad repercussions of gym life. I ended up with a severely damaged left leg with also femoral neuropathy (I am almost 32 years old) 4 years ago, diagnosed from heavy weighted lunges. Heard a loud rip and snap, had to walk with a cane for 2 years straight. Now I cant run, jump or bear significant weight on my left leg and it puts a severe strain on my lower back because without proper balanced left and right leg bending it creates imbalances. LISTEN up people, take your time in the gym. Lift as light as you can go for multiple reps and increase the weight as slowly as you can and try not to rush. I am glad you are educating people about this scoobs just as with your previous videos.

Sorry to hear about your injuries but for me lifting heavy weights regularly keeps me feeling strong and as young as ever at the ripe old age of 53! It’s all about good technique and full range of motion and heavy lifting actually increases your bone density . Of course it’s only possible if your injury free but I’ve proved it’s possible to lift heavy and stay injury free....Mike Ohearn is my inspiration whether he’s Natty or not

Fitness is great and I'm sure your life has been better for being fit, but it is refreshing to know that you can't truly stop the aging process. We will all have problems as we get older (I'm 61) Fitness just makes it more tolerable. Keep up the good work, and thanks for posting all the videos. Auf Wiedersehen.

Thanks. I've been rehabbing 2 large rotator cuff tears and bursitis for nearly 2 years now. Every time it eases up a bit I get carried away and go too hard. it's so hard just waiting for injuries to heal and using tiny weights. I'm 61 and been training for 45 years here in New Zealand. I just love training so much but have the genetics of Mr Bean. So have never really looked like a body builder. But I am bigger and stronger than if I didn't train. Sometimes it seems that training causes more damage than good. But it's a fine line. Robby Robinson seems fine at 78!

Older people stand to benefit the most from exercise of all age groups. Increased strength and cardio fitness can be life changing for people who start working out at a point that is usually very weak and haven't worked out in years.
It can be the difference between staying mobile without need for help and going to a nursing home. Feeling good is a huge benefit of regular cardio, also: proven reduction in moderate depression.

I recommend a light set of grippers before lifting for elbow issues as a warmup, and 1-2 harder sets at the end of the workout. I use The Ivanko Super Gripper. For shoulders I’ve found rear Delt work and stretching the internal rotators, and keeping pressing movements to a bare minimum help

Do you think that strength training can be an attack on your cartilage, or an advantage to keep it as strong as possible? Is your shoulder cartilage worn out due to exercise?
I am now trying to apply a smart strategy to stay fit for a long time, not too many sets, but continuing to train heavily once a month to keep my strength up.

I go back a couple times a year for prevention and haven't had a problem with it now for about 7 years. Something you might want to consider.

Where it is very similar to me, and yet different in some respects. 3 months and I am 57 years old. Tennis elbow, yes. Spinal stenosis, yes. And a sports hip made of titanium, aluminium, plastic.... but mine spinalstenose is probably closer to the middle of the back. Bench press with dumbbells on the floor.. And I recognize a lot there, but still trying to hit my peak today, since it's been years since I did weight training, and need to lose a lot of weight.. Hate the bike today, but loved that as a child.. I must have dug that up again, and have started to build my own bike that suits me. Exercises I have to do, exercises I can do, and some exercises that I have to stay away from, but am now myself in the process of screwing up my training and my diet, where the goal is not to become world champion in something, but to be happy, and be able to do as much as possible, for as long as possible, and feel good..!

wish i could go back in time and not bother with some exercises- smith chest press (always felt terrible and unnatural to me), behind neck lat pulls, ego lift bicep curls and bench press. Kids nowadays have youtube / more easily accessible advice. Its probably placebo but started with marine collagen (along with the usual glucosamine and omega 3) and it seems to be genuinely helping. I have 'niggles' more than medical diagnoses though but highly recommend the collagen (sometbing i found out about from yt as well)

Scoob, let me give you a tiny tip on chronic pain. you should attempt meditation, especially awareness meditation. that makes you generally aware of your body. This reduces stress, inflammation, chronic tensing of muscles etc that are usually the cause of chronic pains. i understand some may be due to getting older. but a lot of it can be fixed through physical and mental relaxation. If you dont believe me spend a day paying attention to your lower back. notice how often its tense. notice when you pay attention without trying to fix it, it lets go.
I recommend the book the mind illuminated for meditation. also some eckhart tolle stuff on being present and letting go.

WOuld make my problem worse, not better. The most painful time of the day is getting out of bed where I go from spine extended to spine compressed. Inversion is worse

Gotta keep moving! With regard to your lower back, do you deep massage your glutes? I have found lying on a tennis ball and rolling on the glutes gets really deep in the muscle to discover deep sore points. Lower back really relieved immediately as I think tight glutes do pull on the pelvis. After the massage I then apply cold there.

Does doing those rows with a wider grip cause you shoulder pain? Cause I assume I'd feel amazing for your back.

What should be a split/frequency for a 45 year old? I HATE full body and LOVE weight-lifting/calisthenics hybrid routines. Is a Pull/Push/Legs 6x a week too much? Thanks!

Hi Scoob, I ve been following you on RUclips for a long time. As a long term low back pain suferrer my self, I would recommend a book called Back mechanic by Dr. Stuart Mcgill. It might help you. Thank you for what you are doing, stay fit

Not sure if what you say is true, 71 still compete in powerlifting competitions, probably helps that I have never taken any PEDs.

It sure is different for everyone and I have certainly taken many bumps along the way. However the difference between bodybuilding and exercise is that the former is purely about ego, whereas the latter is about robust health.

Define what is “exercise” and what is not

    • @And1Mell
      @And1Mell 4 месяца назад

@@scooby1961that's a great question, one that is lost on most gym rats and "fitness" enthusiasts. Exercise (for fitness), is any training you do to sustainably maintain or possibly improve functionality for robust health. As opposed to sports specific training like bodybuilding, where the goal is muscular proportions. Exercising is about adaptability and can never lead to injury. If you get injured from your training, you aren't exercising. Sports training is about specificity, it's about maximizing a sports specific skillset and can easily lead to injury.
