      The story behind it is a bit deeper, the "Proper" guild was reserved for local Germans and the Small guild was the place for people of Latvian origin (people could be completely Germanised, but they knew who you were), and we are talking of the beginning of the 20th century, when things were changing rapidly, the right to legally own something inside the Riga wall for Latvians was given only in the mid 18th century. So you guess what it means :)

    You needed to visit the original Lido, this is just a branch business. The big Lido was like Latvian Disney land when growing up

      Haha Latvian Disneyland, that sounds amazing. We planned to make our way out there, but ran out of time in the end. Now I definitely wish I went! 😢

      It's a lido, what do you mean by the brach business? It serves the same kinds of foods as the one that you are talking about however that one has additional things there, used to have an ice skating rink

    • @vargr198
      @vargr198 2 месяца назад

      If by the "original" you meant Lido Krasta, you are wrong. That's relatively new establishment. The very first Lido was godawful smelly place that looked more like communal showers than a bistro. But that was early 90's when Camel Caffe was still the top of our expectations. The hype and overpriced french fries built the mini empire that Lido is today.

    12:20 Soviet union authorities wanted to remove the monument but they were afraid that will raise a rebellion and that is correct because that monument also reminded people here of freedom and on 14 June 1987, about 5,000 people gathered at the monument to lay flowers. This rally renewed the national independence movement, which later resulted in restoration of freedom for Latvia.

      Unfortunately many Jewish cultural life things were lost in latvia and got destroyed by latvian and other nazis. Glad this one survived. However I think only one synagogue has remained in riga and its in the old town, a very beautiful place. The great choral synagogue and others were destroyed by the criminals there at that time. In kuldīga you can still see the old synagogue, surprisingly they didn't touch it there for some reasons. The Jewish city daugavpils for example had over 40 synagogues and only a few of them have survived

    The part where the freedom monument symbolises Russia holding the 3 baltic states is very untrue, it actually symbolises the 3 oldest regions of Latvia: Kurzeme, Latgale and Vidzeme. The whole monument is to recognise Latvian history and future and to mourn the soldiers that lost their lives during war. Great video! Loved the scenic panoramas.

    "Ala" cellar is famous for its live folk music as well, as implied in the title. Looks like you missed out on that due to low season, urgh. Old town and center has seen more life indeed, we keep hearing it's property owners charging a fortune and regrettably bankrupting businesses that once were there. "XL Pelmeņi" and many other charming places gone. "Lido" is a good recommendation, I concur.

    Pelmeni is not Russian-Russian :(
    Its from Russia belongs to Udmurti people (Indigenous People of Uralo-Volga region) and translate as (Bread Ear) Pel-myan` even form itself looks like a Bread Ear of a Bear
    I really wish and hope you visit Russia one day but not Moscow Russia. Indigenous Regions such as : Dagestan,Udmurtia,Karelia,Komi,Yakutia,Tatarstan. each region unique language culture and food.
    PS: this episode bangers, cat story ridiculous

      Oh come on. Tell that to italian ravioli or chinese dumplings. As some other food tourist said - every culture found a way to put dough and meat together and the result was always amazing.
      I'm not dismissing your claim though, I'm well aware how russians absorb everything to re-introduce as their own. But that dish became popular here in soviet period, mostly because it was an easy way to pack substandard meat to sell cheap. Thus, in Latvia we call it russian dish.

    But for food I can say that only bread soup was traditional.
    If you want a traditional food than you should try potato pancakes, gray peas with bacon, or potatoes with cottage cheese and herring. For the traditional soup I recommend Cold Soup.
