MTV grossly underestimated how much people actually care about the queens and it not just a TV/reality show for people. Not JUST the Top 6 matter or are good at drag.
Yeah, tbh no matter if they go home first or go home with the crown, we end up caring about all of them, flaws & all. We see them as human beings, unlike most production companies & ish, that’s their problem.
My main issue with how season 15 is editing isn’t just the invisibility of certain queens or how little confessional time some queens get, but it’s also that the entire episodes feel so rushed. There are no mini challenges anymore, Ru doesn’t come to the work room to talk to them anymore, there are no walk throughs for the challenges anymore, it’s basically just straight to the challenge which then also feels rushed and heavily edited. Even the runways are super short. It just feels like we don’t really get to see anything.
I said it in other videos, and I'm saying it here: This channel change was a DISASTER. For everyone. And here, it shows it was a disaster for the editors, who suddenly had to shrink an edit with LESS time than if they had known it was 40 minutes from the start. I'm just so mad. Cutting down time when you have more queens? MTV just didn't give a crap about the queens. Mistreatment FROM MTV of EVERYONE should be the next video!
Everyone is furious with MTV - I suspect that includes the producers. I just can't figure out what they were thinking. I can understand the concept of trying to make a "Queer TV Destination Night!", but you don't do that by taking a beloved, ESTABLISHED show and cut it so damn short that many of the runway review fan videos are getting to be *longer than the actual episode itself*. And normally I wouldn't be here for these extra long reviews from fans, but honestly the queens are getting more screen time from fan reviews than they are in the show - *especially* with regard to their runways. The queens spend literally THOUSANDS of dollars on those runways, they work very, very hard on those pieces and they are being seen for an average of 7-13 seconds, depending on what metric you're using (13 is counting the critiques and the group scenes / camera pans, 7 seconds seems to reflect just the runway and the group view when *all* of the queens are on the stage before critiques), so I'm totally cool with a fan show keeping the runway outfits up for a few minutes each.

i knew the editing was a problem when even my mom got upset about it. she's not as entrenched in the drag race fandom and analyses as i am so she doesn't normally pick up on weird editing or storylines or anything, but she is very upset about not getting to watch the judges deliberate (it was her favorite part of the show and of most competition-based reality shows).
They cut down Robin Fierce's edit because she is actually Miss Fiercalicious's Drag Mother. Robin Fierce is trying to enact her revenge on Rupaul and World of Wonder for letting her daughter being fourth. If you look at the trailer for S15, you can see Robin doing the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart technique on Rupaul.
I think a part of the pacing and editing problems are caused by season 15 being filmed as if it was going to be 90 minutes. Back in the older seasons, they knew going into filming that the episodes would only be 40 minutes and filmed with that knowledge in mind. They were able to get in judges' deliberations, Rumail, storylines, all in 40 minutes because they knew how to be concise. They also paced the challenges in accordance with this time limit: challenges that focused more on group performances than individual ones were placed earlier so they didn't have to juggle as many queens individually in the edit at once. Nowadays, challenges like Snatch Game, the ball, improv, branding, etc (all individual-heavy challenges) come much earlier in the season than they used to since they expect to have more time to devote to them. But season 15 got neutered by MTV and thus they were stuck with editing down these massive, time-consuming challenges into 40 minutes.
@@Zimzum93 I think the show has had a 90-minute episodes from season 10 on. Untucked was attached to the main, hour-long show. But it was presented as as 90 minutes all together.
i also think a huge aspect is that their editors aren’t used to creating storylines in a shorter time frame sk they’re still editing like it was a longer episode
I bought the season on Amazon and am still holding out hope that they're going to give us "expanded content" when the season ends, or even one of those old-school "countdown to the crown" episodes. I loved those episodes. Fight me. 😂😂😂 Anywhoodle, I really hope they do something with all the extra filmed content - the mini challenges, the walk throughs, and ESPECIALLY the judge's private deliberations.
Which sucks because they literally started out by setting her up to be this season's Jinkx, Ginger, or Ben DeLacreme: the super campy, comedy Queen who can't dance but can act and sing. Just to... completely cut her out of the acting challenge edit.
I wonder if she was actually meant to get a more complex edit had we seen more of what’s happening each week. I’ve been liking what I see of hers, but yeah the delusional edit is going hard. Someone has to stir the pot though. I’m kinda happy that Luxx isn’t really getting the delusional edit anymore though cause I feel like people come for the POC even harder when they get that edit.
In her case, many S15 girls have said that Anetra was incredibly quiet in the workroom. So even if she's getting some confessionals, she may not really have a lot of Werk Room moments because she's not saying much.
After the first two episodes of s15, I rewatched the video where the queens were announced and was so confused by Princess Poppy. I didn't remember her AT ALL. I even commented under the video asking if Poppy was in the episodes. That's the kind of edit they gave her - I literally forgot that she even was in the show.
This season is just so awkward and uncomfortable to watch, kinda like Vanjie on The Pit Stop. It feels like MTV thought they were Sasha Belle and had “cracked the code” as well only to see the fans revolt almost immediately. It’s very sad to see a once great drag competition evolve into a pageant of who can spend the most on expensive fashion grad couture and SoundCloud music production. Drag as an art form in the U.S. just feels so homogenized and commodified for what seems like the sole purpose of getting on a TV show to market Ru’s chocolates and cocktails and helping her win awards and buy more land to frack. That said, I honestly enjoy all of the queens this season and wish they had been treated better by MTV. I hope they all ‘All About Eve’ RuPaul.
They literally diminishing Sasha It’s obvious she’s winning at this rate but everything from the show to the pit stop is just praising Sasha for everything like let’s end it now and give her the money
I would say yes but I wouldn’t shut Mistress out from winning this season she has been the star of the show! Sasha is kinda invisible other than that praise

to be honest, i think its kinda because they have nothing to do with her? shes won so many tournaments and has made such a name for herself before even getting on the show that you cant give her an underdog edit, you can't give her the confidence boost edit, shes fairly quiet compared to the other girls so she doesn't even get the mentor edit- what else is there to do but praise the very fact that shes there at all? it would be like if bendela from all stars 3 was cast on season 6 instead of bendela from s6. what more can you do with her besides pointing at her and saying "yep, heres our world famous drag queen and legend in the community. there she is, being basically perfect." ??
My biggest problem with the pacing has been that even with 40 minutes they’re trying to squeeze a tragedy mirror in every episode so there’s literally no time for any fun werkroom antics, anything that isn’t runway or challenge is sad and it’s giving me sad story burnout 😭
8:22 The 25 confessionals is kinda hilariously low, when you consider the record for confessionals in a single episode (Excluding Untucked, where it's tied), is Jasmine Kennedie getting 22 confessionals in 1 episode. This means this episode, EVERYONE got 3 more confessionals total, than JUST Jasmine did in the episode where she got the most confessionals in S14.
Note that for season 7 it was filmed with 40 minute episodes in mind, whereas season 15 was definitely meant to follow the format of 60 minutes. As a video editor myself, I definitely think they had edited the episodes to be 60 minutes but had to cut down what was already edited to be 40 minutes and that's why it feels so out of place. I'm sure if the decision wasn't as last minute as it was, the editors could have had more time to better include everyone. It's hard to cut down what was intentioned to be way longer, especially since they film these seasons waaaaaay in advance. Whoever decided to impulsively cut the season down for Show That Shall Not Be Named really dun goofed and it's a real tragedy as I love this cast and I still feel like I don't know any of them.

In the older seasons they had 45 mins and they still managed to have mini challenges and deliberations so I don’t understand why we aren’t getting hardly any of that now.
You know what's funny, I really think of Marcia^3 as one of the main narrators of this season. I didn't realize she had so few confessionals, and it actually surprises me... she's so animated that her confessionals are often the ones I best remember from the episodes - well, she and Anetra... and Sasha but that's really only because the gloves with nails haunt my nightmares and make me distrust her 😹😹😹... because of the facial expressions and her weird ball earrings rocking back and forth on her earlobes.
i feel like the return of 60mins episode is gonna highlight a huge discrepancy from queens who will be forgotten about, versus the queens who will be recalled (and most of them will probably be the top 6 that got a favourable edit from the start)
Jax’s edit will go down in herstoey as one of the cruelest because they just dragged literally any chance they got then didn’t even provide edits that’s really justified it, while not giving her even a proper send off in untuck. It just felt so unnecessarily mean
The editing became more heavy handed when I noticed that production sped up some the girls during their runway looks for the Beautiful Nightmare category.
This whole exercise makes me wonder about the producer changes behind the scenes. It seems like in earlier seasons, there were producers who were really good interviewers, yielding to lots of confessional moments. And in this season the confessionals have just kind of been there.
The problem is indeed like you said: “they’re stories are not being told”, these queens probably got incredible new relationships out of this competition and we know ZERO, ZILCH, about it!!! Who’s friends with whom? Who hates who? Who loves each other’s drag? Why do we not see that Spice got adopted by Malaysia?!

Ok but the way they edited the Lipsync Lalaparuza was INFURIATING. Sasha was giving the entire universe its life and building to crescendos in her performance and every time she was about to throw a completing move the camera cut away from her. It was bizarre.
You're totally right. Rewatching older seasons it feels that we know better the queens and the time difference isn't that noticeable as it is with this new season. Soooo I blame the editors and production 🤦🏻♀️
I think its obviously off when even though Anetra is absolutely amazing all I can really remember is "walk that fucking duck"...which while it was a gaggy moment...thats not good. It got to the point where I knew so little about Anetra, during the granny group challenge as soon as they said she didn't know her words I said "bottom", and then we she wasn't....ehhh???
I think a big problem is the show’s just gotten so rehearsed and so overproduced. The queens are so focused on the competition and win win win win that they basically become little drag queen robots. Like pull a string and a catchphrase comes out. You miss the small little improvised fun silly moments with the queens.
I think that now the show is more focused in giving some queens the "See you in All stars" edit, to all of those who are having more screen time, but at the same time you don't see them as winners of the season, like we had in the past with Alyssa Edwards, Katya, Detox, when they are the narrators with some bitchy moments. Salina is clearly having the Miss congeniality edit. So yep, they're just trying tooooooo hard with the storylines of some, forgetting all about others.
What an amazing video! I really apreciate you analyzing the differences between this season and what is a similar season in time and cast size. Season 7 is one of my personal favorite seasons, so I it was nice to hear that there is reason for that in the way that even with a limited episode length, they were able to highlight the queens and tell a story.
6:29 in this season you don't want a confessional. From episode 1-2 with our poor Irene, it seems like the more they talk to you, the more likely that your ass is going home. 😂😂
I'm actually currently re-watching season 7 atm because my partner had never seen the earlier seasons before, we're now up to season 7 and at the same time we are also watching season 15 as it airs. I noticed the run times were the same but season 7 just feels way more coherent and less choppy than season 15. I think 15 only being 40 mins could have worked out fine if the drag race team knew that before going in to film this season.

I've been talking about this specific comparison for ages and i think a large part of why the edit of this season (and even more recent seasons) feels so weird and makes the season feel hollow is because the producers realized we liked certain archetypes of queens (the comedy ones that are adept at everything, the fashion ones, the acrobats, the actors, the baby queens still figuring themselves out) that they tried to cast queens that checked as many of those boxes as possible. so many of the queens on s15 overlap popular archetypes to the point where on a season like s7, theyd be automatic frontrunners. but because theyre so polished in terms of drag theres kind of no story to make with them. if we compare to season 7 storylines- they cant do the young vs old storyline because most of the cast are in their 20s and have been performing >6 years. they cant do the coming out of their shell storyline because everyone is pretty confident in who they are already. you cant poke at rivalries because the cast are relatively quiet and mature this season (possibly due to fear of backlash). you cant even do a busted drag to queen storyline because everyone's makeup and outfits are technically perfect and theyve just sort of resorted to picking at marcia for having an established brand and aesthetic. the result is a feeling of production being the ones to manipulate the egoes of the queens and drive conflict instead of the queens being the ones to create the storylines by being themselves and production capitalizing on it. it makes me feel like drag race has seen they can put out something perfect but no longer wishes to put in the effort towards it. thats just a speculation. a Drag Race Speculation. thank you for reading,
The difference between seasons 1-8 being 40 minutes and season 15 being 40 minutes is that 1-8 were FILMED SPECIFICALLY for 40 minutes. They knew their run time, they knew that they had to process and trim things down to get the edit they needed whilst still having everything that made Drag Race what it was during those eras. Whether they did a good job of that or not is up to everyone's perspective but there is very much a glaring difference between them and season 15. Season 15 though just doesn't work in that formula, simply because the show is different. The format is different, how they portray the queens and their storylines has completely changed, the personas the producers give the queens is not the same as it was. It just doesn't work with what the show tries to produce anymore. And with everything they've tried to cram into their biggest cast ever, we've lost some of the classic Drag Race montras. Hardly ever any Ru walk ins, no judges deliberation, no "bring back my girls". Like DD said, we've been given the longer format for 5 years now and it doesn't feel good having things taken away from us that we've had for years. The biggest crime is that MTV has done everything in it's power to sacrifice the cast of season 15 in every way possible. Even down to miniscle things like when they region restricted the Drag Race youtube channel, months of videos disappearing and no one outside of the US being able to watch the Pit Stop for 1 day. MTV screwed up everything.
Also “older” Drag Race seasons were removed from Netflix globally, there’s only the 11, 12 and 13 left. Netflix is the reason why RPDR has become so popular across the globe (very smart move btw). My friends already waited a year for the new season to get uploaded on Netflix. They don’t bother looking for the episodes online 🏴☠️🏴☠️ A lot of people are just going to drop the series.
If it weren’t for like you said, outside content, and for me untucked, I would have zero attachment to anyone competing. Which is very disappointing for the level of talent they all have. Not everyone watches outside content either so it is heartbreaking all around
I like everyone on the cast but I think at this point, there are just too many queens for a single season. I feel like the maximum number they should have on any given season is 12… I get they have a certain quota of episodes to fill, but like… idk. Film a reunion, do a double premiere with non eliminations, bring someone back halfway… I don’t care. But at least let every queen shine and tell their story!
I "can" understand not knowing anything about Poppy or even Robin because they were early outs. But WTF are they doing with my girl Salina. SHE IS IN THE FCKING COMPETITION, SHE SLAY TWO LIPSYNCKS AND NOTHING.
the reason we have less content is because they clearly got the ALREADY edited 90 min episodes then had to chop them up to 40 min... in the early seasons they had all the raw footage
I would give a check to amethyst honestly. It's hard to tell because the season is airing right now and I feel like in a year and a half or so, It would be nice to retrospect on those readings! But simply, I feel like amethyst was able to show her personality through her confessionals, much like Katya

Another thing I have noticed is the lack of twists and “long term plot line” in comparison to S14. S14 we got the chocolate bar, the drag god, the “flopped snatch game” followed by the lalaparuza, double shantay, double sashay etc. S14 may be an extreme case on over-production, but at least stuff happened, there was a storyline outside drama depending on the queens. In S15, I don’t remember any twists to shake things up (if I had known I would praise over-production last year…). I don’t know where the plot is going. There’s a challenge, we barely have enough content to judge performances, and then a lip sync. I can tell Sasha and Mistress will be in the final, but I don’t know about the others based on the edit.
Having the biggest cast with the shortest episode time was a disaster in the making from the go :/ I don't get how anyone let that slide like it was a good time
It’s time to chop production. Time to reinvent the wheel. Get rid of Ross. Get better guests or don’t have guests at all. Michelle is caring the judges panel. Give her a raise. Retire the format and let a new format rise from the ashes.
It so weird to see episode go presentation of the challenge to runway/elimination. I remember the ball episode when we didn't even saw the candidate sewing ? it was like "it's a ball - runway presentation" It's sad to see a lot of queens being fade away like we got Sasha introduce as a big name but we never see her ? The twins got 70% of the screentime of the firsts episode and it was kinda annoying, I hope they will go back to the old formula, cause we can't really know the queens, we barely know her on this season because the goofy moment on the workroom are removed, it's weird
I wonder how much of these changes are due to poor story production, following the passing of Jacqueline Wilson in 2019. You and others have noted how weird the storytelling has been on the last few seasons. To me this seems like a general quality control issue as the series ages and they lose the team that made things so memorable before.
Tbh you’re right with regards to social media following. Out of all the seasons I do follow the least amount of girls from s15 and it’s only because I don’t know anything about them and/or they haven’t truly STOOD OUT as the one to watch. It just seems so superficial. Which is a shame. The only girls I follow are Sasha, Spice, Sugar and it’s only because I knew them prior to the show.
Drag Race season 15 should've stuck to VH1 or have been a Paramount+ exclusive. We aren't getting enough from these queens. I'm not really attached to any of them. This season is more like they are just there competing and that's it. Also we ALL know Ru and Michelle had a lot to say about the golden girl group challenge in regard to the Hip Hop group considering their faces, but because deliberations have been cut we didn't get to see and hear what they felt. With this many queens you need to have that extra 20 minutes. There's so much missing from the season that it feels like we're only watching to watch, not because we want to see the storylines.

Marcia Marcia Marcia could have easily been given the lovable underdog edit because she was really good at alot of things and her main critique was pretty unwarranted and not always constructive.
The problem is the main edit. I dont like 40 min episodes but season 9 (one the best season ever) had 40 min episodes and the only thing we noticed that was in the runway. The rest of each episode i didnt feel bad edit. So i really dont know whats going on here. It is kinda crazy I still dont fall in love with any of this queens. Instead of that, i feel so bad for them. Hope it gets better

That’s my pick as well, but it could be a red herring to “cover” Sasha being the winner and Mistress the runner-up. But my tinfoil theory is Sasha was secretly a judge all along and will pick the last girl for the final (kind of like that BeBe theory in AS3). It would be a gag but it’s very unlikely. Also so far we haven’t had any twist… 🌚

She went to season 15 with a huge hype but I don't know pretty much nothing for her to be relatable. It might fabricated for a plus size queen to win but honestly I ain't mad about it cause it could have been Mistress or Eureka for all these years (maybe Ginger and Silky but idk)

You forgot the other part of the question: if 40 min aren’t enough to know the queens/story, then where is that time going to? If you compared it to newer seasons and perhaps you found that by Ep 7 we still didn’t know enough about the queens/story despite the 1hr runtime, then perhaps that answers the bigger question

i knew the editing was a problem when even my mom got upset about it. she's not as entrenched in the drag race fandom and analyses as i am so she doesn't normally pick up on weird editing or storylines or anything, but she is very upset about not getting to watch the judges deliberate (it was her favorite part of the show and of most competition-based reality shows).

I think a part of the pacing and editing problems are caused by season 15 being filmed as if it was going to be 90 minutes. Back in the older seasons, they knew going into filming that the episodes would only be 40 minutes and filmed with that knowledge in mind. They were able to get in judges' deliberations, Rumail, storylines, all in 40 minutes because they knew how to be concise. They also paced the challenges in accordance with this time limit: challenges that focused more on group performances than individual ones were placed earlier so they didn't have to juggle as many queens individually in the edit at once.
Nowadays, challenges like Snatch Game, the ball, improv, branding, etc (all individual-heavy challenges) come much earlier in the season than they used to since they expect to have more time to devote to them. But season 15 got neutered by MTV and thus they were stuck with editing down these massive, time-consuming challenges into 40 minutes.
90 minute episodes??? When have they had 90 min ones? Or was it a typo for 60/1hr

After the first two episodes of s15, I rewatched the video where the queens were announced and was so confused by Princess Poppy. I didn't remember her AT ALL. I even commented under the video asking if Poppy was in the episodes. That's the kind of edit they gave her - I literally forgot that she even was in the show.

This season is just so awkward and uncomfortable to watch, kinda like Vanjie on The Pit Stop. It feels like MTV thought they were Sasha Belle and had “cracked the code” as well only to see the fans revolt almost immediately. It’s very sad to see a once great drag competition evolve into a pageant of who can spend the most on expensive fashion grad couture and SoundCloud music production. Drag as an art form in the U.S. just feels so homogenized and commodified for what seems like the sole purpose of getting on a TV show to market Ru’s chocolates and cocktails and helping her win awards and buy more land to frack. That said, I honestly enjoy all of the queens this season and wish they had been treated better by MTV. I hope they all ‘All About Eve’ RuPaul.

My biggest problem with the pacing has been that even with 40 minutes they’re trying to squeeze a tragedy mirror in every episode so there’s literally no time for any fun werkroom antics, anything that isn’t runway or challenge is sad and it’s giving me sad story burnout 😭
8:22 The 25 confessionals is kinda hilariously low, when you consider the record for confessionals in a single episode (Excluding Untucked, where it's tied), is Jasmine Kennedie getting 22 confessionals in 1 episode.
This means this episode, EVERYONE got 3 more confessionals total, than JUST Jasmine did in the episode where she got the most confessionals in S14.
I feel like the queen I attached the most to was Irene, she went home first but her story arc was COMPLETE thanks to the full length premier episodes.
Note that for season 7 it was filmed with 40 minute episodes in mind, whereas season 15 was definitely meant to follow the format of 60 minutes. As a video editor myself, I definitely think they had edited the episodes to be 60 minutes but had to cut down what was already edited to be 40 minutes and that's why it feels so out of place. I'm sure if the decision wasn't as last minute as it was, the editors could have had more time to better include everyone. It's hard to cut down what was intentioned to be way longer, especially since they film these seasons waaaaaay in advance. Whoever decided to impulsively cut the season down for Show That Shall Not Be Named really dun goofed and it's a real tragedy as I love this cast and I still feel like I don't know any of them.

In the older seasons they had 45 mins and they still managed to have mini challenges and deliberations so I don’t understand why we aren’t getting hardly any of that now.
You know what's funny, I really think of Marcia^3 as one of the main narrators of this season. I didn't realize she had so few confessionals, and it actually surprises me... she's so animated that her confessionals are often the ones I best remember from the episodes - well, she and Anetra... and Sasha but that's really only because the gloves with nails haunt my nightmares and make me distrust her 😹😹😹... because of the facial expressions and her weird ball earrings rocking back and forth on her earlobes.
i feel like the return of 60mins episode is gonna highlight a huge discrepancy from queens who will be forgotten about, versus the queens who will be recalled (and most of them will probably be the top 6 that got a favourable edit from the start)

This whole exercise makes me wonder about the producer changes behind the scenes. It seems like in earlier seasons, there were producers who were really good interviewers, yielding to lots of confessional moments. And in this season the confessionals have just kind of been there.
The fact that in Surivor logic nearly half of the queens could be considered to have the "purple" edit seems really wild to me.
This is why I love season 12, I feel like every queen would get a check mark, I even grew to pove the early outs like Nicki and Rockem!
The problem is indeed like you said: “they’re stories are not being told”, these queens probably got incredible new relationships out of this competition and we know ZERO, ZILCH, about it!!! Who’s friends with whom? Who hates who? Who loves each other’s drag? Why do we not see that Spice got adopted by Malaysia?!

I think its obviously off when even though Anetra is absolutely amazing all I can really remember is "walk that fucking duck"...which while it was a gaggy moment...thats not good. It got to the point where I knew so little about Anetra, during the granny group challenge as soon as they said she didn't know her words I said "bottom", and then we she wasn't....ehhh???
I think a big problem is the show’s just gotten so rehearsed and so overproduced. The queens are so focused on the competition and win win win win that they basically become little drag queen robots. Like pull a string and a catchphrase comes out. You miss the small little improvised fun silly moments with the queens.

I think that now the show is more focused in giving some queens the "See you in All stars" edit, to all of those who are having more screen time, but at the same time you don't see them as winners of the season, like we had in the past with Alyssa Edwards, Katya, Detox, when they are the narrators with some bitchy moments.

What an amazing video! I really apreciate you analyzing the differences between this season and what is a similar season in time and cast size. Season 7 is one of my personal favorite seasons, so I it was nice to hear that there is reason for that in the way that even with a limited episode length, they were able to highlight the queens and tell a story.

I'm actually currently re-watching season 7 atm because my partner had never seen the earlier seasons before, we're now up to season 7 and at the same time we are also watching season 15 as it airs. I noticed the run times were the same but season 7 just feels way more coherent and less choppy than season 15. I think 15 only being 40 mins could have worked out fine if the drag race team knew that before going in to film this season.

I've been talking about this specific comparison for ages and i think a large part of why the edit of this season (and even more recent seasons) feels so weird and makes the season feel hollow is because the producers realized we liked certain archetypes of queens (the comedy ones that are adept at everything, the fashion ones, the acrobats, the actors, the baby queens still figuring themselves out) that they tried to cast queens that checked as many of those boxes as possible. so many of the queens on s15 overlap popular archetypes to the point where on a season like s7, theyd be automatic frontrunners. but because theyre so polished in terms of drag theres kind of no story to make with them. if we compare to season 7 storylines- they cant do the young vs old storyline because most of the cast are in their 20s and have been performing >6 years. they cant do the coming out of their shell storyline because everyone is pretty confident in who they are already. you cant poke at rivalries because the cast are relatively quiet and mature this season (possibly due to fear of backlash). you cant even do a busted drag to queen storyline because everyone's makeup and outfits are technically perfect and theyve just sort of resorted to picking at marcia for having an established brand and aesthetic. the result is a feeling of production being the ones to manipulate the egoes of the queens and drive conflict instead of the queens being the ones to create the storylines by being themselves and production capitalizing on it. it makes me feel like drag race has seen they can put out something perfect but no longer wishes to put in the effort towards it. thats just a speculation. a Drag Race Speculation. thank you for reading,

The difference between seasons 1-8 being 40 minutes and season 15 being 40 minutes is that 1-8 were FILMED SPECIFICALLY for 40 minutes. They knew their run time, they knew that they had to process and trim things down to get the edit they needed whilst still having everything that made Drag Race what it was during those eras. Whether they did a good job of that or not is up to everyone's perspective but there is very much a glaring difference between them and season 15.
Season 15 though just doesn't work in that formula, simply because the show is different. The format is different, how they portray the queens and their storylines has completely changed, the personas the producers give the queens is not the same as it was. It just doesn't work with what the show tries to produce anymore. And with everything they've tried to cram into their biggest cast ever, we've lost some of the classic Drag Race montras. Hardly ever any Ru walk ins, no judges deliberation, no "bring back my girls". Like DD said, we've been given the longer format for 5 years now and it doesn't feel good having things taken away from us that we've had for years.
The biggest crime is that MTV has done everything in it's power to sacrifice the cast of season 15 in every way possible. Even down to miniscle things like when they region restricted the Drag Race youtube channel, months of videos disappearing and no one outside of the US being able to watch the Pit Stop for 1 day. MTV screwed up everything.
Also “older” Drag Race seasons were removed from Netflix globally, there’s only the 11, 12 and 13 left. Netflix is the reason why RPDR has become so popular across the globe (very smart move btw). My friends already waited a year for the new season to get uploaded on Netflix. They don’t bother looking for the episodes online 🏴☠️🏴☠️ A lot of people are just going to drop the series.
If it weren’t for like you said, outside content, and for me untucked, I would have zero attachment to anyone competing. Which is very disappointing for the level of talent they all have. Not everyone watches outside content either so it is heartbreaking all around
I like everyone on the cast but I think at this point, there are just too many queens for a single season. I feel like the maximum number they should have on any given season is 12… I get they have a certain quota of episodes to fill, but like… idk. Film a reunion, do a double premiere with non eliminations, bring someone back halfway… I don’t care. But at least let every queen shine and tell their story!

Another thing I have noticed is the lack of twists and “long term plot line” in comparison to S14. S14 we got the chocolate bar, the drag god, the “flopped snatch game” followed by the lalaparuza, double shantay, double sashay etc. S14 may be an extreme case on over-production, but at least stuff happened, there was a storyline outside drama depending on the queens. In S15, I don’t remember any twists to shake things up (if I had known I would praise over-production last year…). I don’t know where the plot is going. There’s a challenge, we barely have enough content to judge performances, and then a lip sync. I can tell Sasha and Mistress will be in the final, but I don’t know about the others based on the edit.
Having the biggest cast with the shortest episode time was a disaster in the making from the go :/ I don't get how anyone let that slide like it was a good time

It so weird to see episode go presentation of the challenge to runway/elimination. I remember the ball episode when we didn't even saw the candidate sewing ? it was like "it's a ball - runway presentation" It's sad to see a lot of queens being fade away like we got Sasha introduce as a big name but we never see her ? The twins got 70% of the screentime of the firsts episode and it was kinda annoying, I hope they will go back to the old formula, cause we can't really know the queens, we barely know her on this season because the goofy moment on the workroom are removed, it's weird

I wonder how much of these changes are due to poor story production, following the passing of Jacqueline Wilson in 2019. You and others have noted how weird the storytelling has been on the last few seasons. To me this seems like a general quality control issue as the series ages and they lose the team that made things so memorable before.

Tbh you’re right with regards to social media following. Out of all the seasons I do follow the least amount of girls from s15 and it’s only because I don’t know anything about them and/or they haven’t truly STOOD OUT as the one to watch. It just seems so superficial. Which is a shame. The only girls I follow are Sasha, Spice, Sugar and it’s only because I knew them prior to the show.

Drag Race season 15 should've stuck to VH1 or have been a Paramount+ exclusive. We aren't getting enough from these queens. I'm not really attached to any of them. This season is more like they are just there competing and that's it. Also we ALL know Ru and Michelle had a lot to say about the golden girl group challenge in regard to the Hip Hop group considering their faces, but because deliberations have been cut we didn't get to see and hear what they felt. With this many queens you need to have that extra 20 minutes. There's so much missing from the season that it feels like we're only watching to watch, not because we want to see the storylines.
So S15 (director cut) is the gay version of Justice League (snyder cut) let's campaign to have it

Marcia Marcia Marcia could have easily been given the lovable underdog edit because she was really good at alot of things and her main critique was pretty unwarranted and not always constructive.
The problem is the main edit. I dont like 40 min episodes but season 9 (one the best season ever) had 40 min episodes and the only thing we noticed that was in the runway. The rest of each episode i didnt feel bad edit. So i really dont know whats going on here. It is kinda crazy I still dont fall in love with any of this queens. Instead of that, i feel so bad for them. Hope it gets better

You forgot the other part of the question: if 40 min aren’t enough to know the queens/story, then where is that time going to? If you compared it to newer seasons and perhaps you found that by Ep 7 we still didn’t know enough about the queens/story despite the 1hr runtime, then perhaps that answers the bigger question
