Have both Leica Q and Richo GR2. Both are great camera. Day time street I use GR quick and small. Night time mostly shot Leica Q with high iso performance.
One way to get around the Ricoh battery life is to set one of the display screens to empty. That way you can eliminate the major power drain and get your display back by pressing the disp button. Easily doubles the life of the battery.
I have the Ricoh 8.1 megapixel GR digital and love it. I put everything on silent. I use the black and white mode and 400 800 and 1600 iso settings. Snap focus and up the sharpness and contrast. It's so light.
Luis...nice overview of the pros and cons of these two cameras. I have the Leica Q2 and had the Ricoh GR II. I will be purchasing another Ricoh GR III for the reasons you outlined in your review. Sometimes I don't want to carry the Leica because it attracts too much attention in certain settings or when I want something in my pocket to take images for better than an iPhone. Having said that I do feel that Leica cameras as well as Fuji, Pentax and Ricoh offer the user an experience that you just can't have with Sony for example. I like the dials, buttons and simplicity that provides the photographer a gateway to creating images. I would appreciate your thoughts on this topic. Thanks again for the thoughtful review.
For the money, the Ricoh cameras are incomparable. I have the GRD (original), GR1 and GR3, and I have shot some of the sharpest, most film-like images in my collection (and I generally shoot with full-frame Canon and Sony cameras).
Well balanced review - thanks. I bought the Ricoh, but sent it back. I didn’t like the lens telescoping in and out every time I switched it on...it reminded me of old point and shoot cheap cameras, but the image quality is great. I just found that on the occasions when I wanted a small camera that was pocketable, I kept returning to my iPhone 12 which takes amazing images too. I’ve recently bought the Leica Q2...and I’m keeping it. The ergonomics are brilliant and full frame is great too. I’ve bought the Grip with mine + the Finger Loop and Thumb Rest, that makes it very easy and safe to carry and for single handed operation....the only downside (for me) is the price, but the engineering quality is the best I’ve experienced in a camera + with the lens being fixed, it means I’m not tempted to buy lenses and it forces you to think about composition and Zoom with your feet - same thing with the Ricoh, 2 great cameras - Cheers - Peter.
great video and comparison points. i've had my GR3 for a year now and it has been the best camera i ever bought. always with me due to size, takes amazing picctures equaling to my big DSLR, SOOC area great and raw is very rich and flexible. lens is sharp at 2.8 and up. honestly it's the almost perfect camera. the one thing that bothers me about it and makes me want to consider a leica Q is the lack of manual / deliberate shooting that we get from more traditional cameras like a viewfinder and manual focus ring and aperture ring. but it's not meant for that it's a point and shoot with a DSLR heart. If leica made a 50mm Q i would 100% buy that one as my more photography deliberate camera and kepp the gr3 for those quick snaps
Another great video 😊. I own both of these cameras and love them both equally, but for different occasions. The Leica is hands down the most "fun" and "inspiring" camera I have ever owned. Just holding it makes you want to shoot and be creative. And that lens. Wow. The Ricoh is my fave no excuse camera ever. What I mean by that is no matter where I am going (aside from swimming maybe lol) I have "no excuse" to not bring the Ricoh. And it punches way above its weight class. I have made some of my all time fave photos on that little camera. And both cameras are a dream for zone focussing which makes them really stand out.
@@luischavezphoto I could not agree more. I also have A7III and A7SIII and as much as I love those cameras (I use them more for video really) they don’t give me that “feeling” like holding the GRIII and Q2. Truly inspiring photography cameras.
Yeah i know what you mean. I also use the Sony A series cameras for most of my professional work but when I want to have fun taking photos, I leave those home. Lol
Thank you for making this video. 🙂 "$5000 is quite a hefty price for a non interchangeable lens camera." That might just win "understatement of the year award." Having said that, both are expensive for what they are. Of course, both have excellent IQ and both excel in certain areas. As others have mentioned, I hate the GR3 extending lens (aka "fragile dust sucker"). But there are work arounds. The Leica will never be an option for me because of price. But life's too short for regrets... lol.

It s great to compare these two cameras, but the difference of prize is amazing..Specially if you know that you could take incredibles shots with the little GR3..Of course not in all situations but i made several tests with my NIKON+SIGMART 24mm 1.4 / GR3... Hard to see the differences lol...Ciaooo / JF
Have a GrIII and love it, the IQ is soo much better than one would anticipate given its size. Have always been a fan of Leica, every time I handle a Q I love it, but have never owned one. So not sure if living with it would be different. A used Q is available locally and I'm considering it. Not cheap but cheap for a Leica Q, so debating. I have a Sony A7RV and have to say it's the best camera I have ever used. So part of me thinks I'm dealing with GAS, and should just look away. Came back here to re-watch your video for some added insight.
I just ordered a griii mainly for the size and the sensor . I use a canon r6 for street and hobby but sometimes I wish I didn’t have to lug it around . Got a couple Nikon z’s for work stuff 🙃
I own both of these cameras also. So, I was happy to watch your video.. Each camera has its unique user experience to allow me to express my creativity. They're wonderful tools to make photos.
Best camera comparison review of these two cameras! Very detailed and concise. I didn't know the Q2 had IBIS and that the battery 'door' was just the base of the battery itself until now! It's true what they say that the Q2 is the gateway drug to leica, its got everything you need minus the rangefinder and 'purity' of the M models, but for a fixed 28mm focal length camera, it looks, feels and functions as much as it costs. The ricoh gr3 is next on my list of digital cameras for street photography, if fuji doesn't release a new 28mm compact camera soon ;) The weight and pocketability along with its sensor size and 3 axis ibis makes it hard to beat. honestly some days I look at my X100V and still hesitate to take it, especially on grocery runs, and it always ends up being the days when something happens on the streets and I regret; so having a gr3 will fulfill that daily life niche xD Great review Luis!
Awesome comparison video. Leica Q2 is so great but the pricing even borrowing is expensive. 😂 Can’t wait for the new Ricoh GRIV. It’s going to be even better than the 3. It’s so compact that sometimes people think it’s a cellphone. Stay safe & blessings!
The cost of the Q2 can be justified in several ways. The 28mm lens would cost more on its own, the Q2 has a high enough pixel count to enable use of the in body crop feature without a huge drop in quality .... and then there's the build quality.
Great video, thanks. I own Sony cameras and the GR3 and was thinking about buying Q2 and your video help me to decide. Yes or no ? That’s the question. Perhaps. I’ll rent one Q2 for a week
Thanks for this video. Just a question on the Highlight Weighted Metering feature. What's the difference if you focus on the highlight, then recover the shadow in post, without using the Highlight Weighted feature, as against to using it?
Hey Luis, thanks for the nice comparison video. One question please: On the sample photos I noticed a very strong vignetting on the Q2. What is your opinion about that? thanks man!
I noticed that when I clicked on them on Dropbox but have never seen that in Lightroom or directly on my computer. My guess is that there is some process that goes on but if you download them, it should be gone. Thanks for watching!
@@luischavezphoto oh cool, when opened the pics the vignetting were gone. one more question please: I am a GR3 owner and love the feature with highlight protection. Is there some workaround to get this feature withe the Q2?
I haven’t found anything that’s similar. I just underexpose and bring the exposure back in post since the Q2 has really good data retention in the shadows.
great watch! would really appreciate any x100v ideas you've got and might want to upload BECAUSE you're really making me want to sell mine for a Leica Q LOL.

Hi. Very effective descriptiona--thanks. By the way, what camera did you use to shoot the video and what was the f-stop?
I have a Ricoh GR IIIx and am saving up for the Q2. Which camera do you find has better autofocus?
Definitely the leica. The autofocus is the biggest downside of the Ricoh. But anyways I love it. The Ricoh is a wonderfull all day camera
@@adventureboy1495 While the AF of the leica is still bad
Super into your edits. Honestly some of the closest to true film I’ve seen. Do you have any presets?
Great video! Your editing is on point. What is the song you used at 17:22 ? Love the vibe!
Hey! Thank you for watching. The song is called evening-laxcity and I found it on musicbed.
I admire your braveness for using Leica fir a wedding. What if the memory card failed and you don’t have a second memory card?!?!?
I would not feel uncomfortable using this camera as a backup but would definitely prefer a double card slot for my primary. Thanks for watching!
What do you think about the weight of q2 ? Is it ok to carry everyday? I’m worrying it’s a little bit heavy for everyday camera
I really love the review on both cameras. Love the ricoh GR III
Don’t forget, the Ricoh also has image stabilisation.
Yes, I talked about it in the low light section of the video!
If the prices were fairer, the Leica would be the choice. Pretty much the Magnus opus for what one would want on a fixed lens 28mm camera....
The cost of the Q2 can be justified in several ways. The 28mm lens would cost more on its own, the Q2 has a high enough pixel count to enable use of the in body crop feature without a huge drop in quality .... and then there's the build quality.
Lol, so if sony made a 100k lens and would sell it fixed for 99.999 it would be justified?
Biggest problem on the Ricoh GR3 is the battery, it's terrible.
When shooting in high ISOs, which one has better looking noise?
Most people would just buy ricoh gr and then continue to lust after leica q2
well quite impressed with ricoh files... I would thought there were no match between those 2
Love the look of the GR snap at 17:58. Is it a preset or custom?

Thanks for this video. Just a question on the Highlight Weighted Metering feature. What's the difference if you focus on the highlight, then recover the shadow in post, without using the Highlight Weighted feature, as against to using it?
if you don't use the highlight-weighted feature it will blow the highlights I think.

Leica Q2 7500 $, Ricoh Gr3 1100$ good job small guy.

There’s definitely other choices out there that are more cost effective. Thanks for watching!

I would love a louder shutter sound, wayyy too quiet 😂
Couldn't go past about 4 minutes when he said "i like to crop into my photos and recompose."
At least, full frame.
Those Leica shots are a different dimension compared to the washed out look of GRiii
Of course! Still going for the Ricoh all day long 😎
Lol the Ricoh does 95% of the Leica and sometimes has better pictures imo
