My history of owning fompqct cameras goes as follows,
X100v, then GR IIIX, then X100V and now GR III.
When I sold my GR IIIX, I didn't realise how much I would miss both the image quality and the pocketability.
I got my current GR III because I wanted the wider lens and I categorically will not be moving back to X100V.
I take my GR everywhere and this means I have got a number of pictures that I simply would have missed if I did not have a camera in my pocket.
That is the reason why I consider the GR to be the best camera I've owned.
Incidentally, I am lucky to own a Fuji XH2 as well, but the Ricoh is used for more often.
The best camera is the one that is in your hand, I think the saying goes.
When I made this decision it came down to one of them I could put in my pocket, and the other I couldn't. I already had a nice camera that I needed to wear on a strap or put in a bag. That's the biggest differentiator to me. I chose the GRIIIx. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Yes this is the main factor for me too. Great little camera to have in the kit wether it’s your only one or a supplement to other gear

Had to rewatch in the morning and my man the GR series lens sharpness really kills the X100 lineup - period.
That’s a fact Dee. And it’s not like there is anything truly wrong with the x100 but damn it’s noticeable side by side. Impressive from an engineering standpoint if nothing else at least

First time viewer of your channel. This was one of the best comparison reviews I have seen, and I have seen a lot! I have the GRIIIx, because like you, 40 mm is my favorite focal length. I also have original x100 since it was first introduced. I had my Fuji x100 IR converted about 5 years ago and it is a fantastic infrared camera, as there is absolutely no hot-spot at any aperture. Converting it to IR was the best way to preserve my particular x100, which had grown long-in-tooth in other ways. All the best.

I’m only part way through this excellent video, but one thing springs to mind which is this; as you often have to move cameras round and operate the relevant switchgear, I think a more professional approach would be the addition of a microphone stand, which would leave both hands free to do all that is required to better demonstrate the cameras. A small point, but one which would add, greater flexibility for your presentations. As usual, your articulate and in-depth commentary is a cut above many other RUclipsrs. Keep up the good work!
Thank you. Yes stands, booms, and other equipment are definitely on the list for future upgrades. I’m still a pretty low budget videographer believe it or not. I use a regular $15 smart lightbulb to light these videos and my microphone costs $25 lol. All in due time! Thanks again!

I’m leaning towards one too. Took the GR III on a trip recently and it was perfect. No camera bag, no expensive gear swinging on my shoulder. In and out the pocket when I need it. Forget about it when I don’t need it. So I need that 40mm too lol
As a Fuji and griiix shooter, I gotta say the best of both worlds is having my xpro 3 with some manual focus voigtlander lenses and the griiix in the pocket for the EDC. 🤝🏼 great video going in depth on both these cameras !
I’ve said it for years now and I am still baffled how Ricoh managed to make such a SHARP lens in a tiny package. This lens is as sharp as some Leica/Voigt lenses I’ve shot. It’s pretty crazy how good both the 28mm/40mm lenses are on these little beast. 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
I’m so close to selling my x100f and grabbing a IIIx. I just want to walk around with both GRs on me. The pocket factor is huge for me personally

Super useful walkthrough- thanks! Using the X100V, considering a switch to the GR3X for the more compact and unassuming body. With a Canon R5 as a main tool, my EDC needs to inspire me to do more snapshots. Today, the iPhone is getting used more than the X100V, because it is quicker and simpler.
For the use case you describe, The GR is so hard to beat.

Solid video and agree with your findings. I have a GR III and love it! Picked up a GR IIIx but felt I used the III more so sold my x, and now wishing I hadn't. I was looking at the images from it and they're great! Though I did find the snap focus less effective with the x, I'm sure due to the longer focal length and shallower depth of field.

Thanks for the fantastic comparison. Really well done and in depth. Im thining to finally swtich to digital for my EDC and trying to decide between these. I use the OG analog GR1 but I really hate that the GRIII has no flash, viewfinder, and more tactile controls. Otherwise its an incredible camera. I might just wait to see which company comes out with new improved version first haha
Might have to look at the GR II to at least retain the built in flash.
I got an XT2. Although I love the X100V, I'll get the GR3 just because of the pocketability (I travel a lot). XT2 still punches above it's weight, with an impeccable sensor with great color and ISO performance.
I love my XT2 (and X100V).
Xt2 is def still well regarded. GR series is undefeated in the convenience category. Now imagine a GR body with the XT2 sensor and colors
Got an Xt2 after my first M43 Olympus and love it. Feels and works great.
I have a Z6II but 90% of the time I'm using GRIII because of usability. But I would expect to see more durability in this beautiful camera.
I’ve learned that pocket size is a must for my everyday camera. My big Sony full frame is my favorite for places I’m willing to carry a camera on a strap, but my second camera needs to be able to come with me when I don’t want to carry something. I love the X100 series, but it’s big enough that it doesn’t solve the ‘carry a camera’ issue that stops me from bringing the full frame some places.
As a result, my Ricoh GR III is irreplaceable to me. It’s the only truly pocketable option in its image class. They are great with firmware too - this weekend they released the new negative film simulation and more features.

I’ve now watched all 30 minutes and have to say it was a very thorough and professional review. You did though move around a bit on your seat and appeared to be physically uncomfortable. If so, maybe you could use a different one to sit on. Just a thought.
Great comparison, great points. I’ve given up on all Fujis for now (own an xe2, xs10 so I’m good) but that gr3 sounds like a nice little camera and I’m looking for something like that. My wife has a canon g7xIII and it’s great, but she said I have to get my own 😂

Great video! Kinda affirms why I just never was able to pull the trigger on the ricoh, the build quality issues just make it a no go for me, only problem is, I can't find an x100v at msrp to actually buy 😂

I looove the GRiiix but can’t seem to adjust the autofocus. Any tips? Also, really noisy outcome.
just get a Pentax Q, fits in your pocket sideways. Or some compact m43 systems with a pancake lens (prime or zoom), but they will be a bit of a tight fit. You dont need to spend 1 to 2k for portability.

The most detailed comparison video I've found about X100V vs GRIII series. I have a GRIII, and I'm very torn between GRIIIX and X100V for my next camera. Sometimes I lean towards GRIIIX, but sometimes I really want X100V. Which one should I get?
Thank you! Honestly I’m making that decision right now. With current used prices of x100f I’m debating of selling for the GR III x right now. Just got back from a trip and used the GR for some street photography and family stuff and the compactness was truly liberating. Didn’t bring a bag of gear or even have to sling my camera, just carried it in my pocket. Thinking both GRs together would be perfect. So it’s a tough one for sure. Me personally I am leaning all GR for the pocket ability and because I have a lot of other rangefinder style cameras I can sling and use if I get that itch. If I didn’t have the other cameras I’m not sure which one I’d choose. Best of luck 🤞
I have both. The 40 is noticably tighter than the 35. I am impressed with the ricoh but love the style of the x100
I ended up making the jump and talked about that experience in my last video. Still love the x100 though. Tough decision for me

Although I like both cameras, I do prefer the GR3. Fuji more for people who like baked in faff. After all the talking the GR picture quality is much better.
I still use 2 x Samsung NX500 with 16, 20, 30 and 45mm primes, so for now, no need for Fuji or Ricoh. ;)
The 100V all day long it is so beautiful and looks like a camera.
I have the X100 and both gr's. The compression of the 35f2 and 40 2.8 is very close. I think the griix is a closer comparison to the X100's

i like both cameras. Now is the x100 vi. I feel like the Fuji x100 vi is going to be a target to thieves. it is a too sough after camera. Maybe the Ricoh will go a bit more under the radar.. that is why i am leaning more towards the Ricoh because it looks more like a cheap camera.. more like a point and shoot camera but very professional as it does not have an automatic mode. I am a bit leaning towards the 40 mm. but i wish it could be 35 mm. i feel that the 28 mm is a bit too broad... Maybe i should wait a bit, Maybe Ricoh will make a new camera... maybe 35mm maybe a viewfinder..... i feel a viewfinder is needed.
i feel sony should wake up and get a good update of the Sony Cyber-shot RX1R II but this one is full frame. These cameras are great cameras but the perfect camera is a hybrid of both cameras... or a hybrid of the three mentioned cameras.

I like my GRiii, but I’ve made the mistake of selling and re-buying the X100 a number of times in the past 10+ years. I won’t make that mistake again. My V isn’t going anywhere unless a successor comes along that’s compelling.
They’re very different cameras, in very different weight classes.

So I actually got the Ricoh griiix instead of the x100v. So far I’m absolutely loving it. The only thing I really miss is the viewfinder that I regularly use on my xt2. I have a feeling Ricoh will really blow up soon.
I am actually debating selling my x100f and grabbing the IIIx for the dual pocket Ricoh combo. I love the GR so much but sometimes want that 40mm look so it feels like a no brainer
@@Lonnie.G I like my X100 S/T. Sorry I never purchased the V. I will not pay a premium for an used body and don’t want to wait several months for a new body. So I have just purchased aGRiii.
I use the EVF a lot. It will take a period for me to use the LCD only. I also am not a fan of the 28mm FOV. I have to get closer to my subject than I feel comfortable with. Again I will have to get use to this too. I have the video button set up to digitally zoom to 35mm FOV as a potential workaround. That will still give me a 16MP file. I lLOVE IBIS and hope the X100VI will have that.
There is no reason for me to pay a premium for the X100V. I am willing to try using the GRiii as an alternative. Maybe the GRiiiX. There is no perfect camera. I can get use to any camera. Fuji has forced me to consider using the Ricoh. I have been satisfied being in Fujiland and they’re not producing a sufficient amount of X 100V bodies allowed me to leave the reservation.

Just because the GR bodies are "pocketable", it does not mean you /should/ put the GR in a pocket.
The GR is too fragile with the dust issues to be put in any pocket without protection. I would not risk my GR that way.

Simply use an aluminium lens cap, they're a cheaply and easily available extra. I've had an X100f and now a GR3 for the last couple of years and had no dust problems with either despite using them in all sorts of conditions and I don't baby my cameras in any way. As an every day carry the Ricoh is the better camera, I shoot a lot of travel and street and have no issue withe wide lens, you just have to be prepared to stand close if you want a close up shot..not rocket science and the image quality still amazes me.
Get the retro ep-7 with the Olympus 20mm 1.4 and you are getting something far better than the Ricoh and more like the 100v

Wanted to pick one up but read too many issues with build quality and dust ingress..... totally unacceptable for something costing so much and they haven't addressed thus far ...... just my five cents
