Never seen Karn (legend) Collins, Ure and Townshend together. I never thought it would happen, but it did. Distant worlds that meet in music. Sometimes it happens. Unforgettable Mick Karn
This show proved what a brilliant and versatile musician Mick Karn was. Still miss him so much, there are days when I suddenly think ‘he’s gone!’ Such a huge loss!
Phil Collins on drums completely changes the version of this iconic song. Notice how Collins puts the focus on the down-beat, he focuses on the groove. He accents on parts that are not in the song (originally). This gives Pete Townshend more time to focus on the versus and the chorus. You can tell that Townshend is on Collins in the beginning to the play parts they worked out in rehearsal. Simon Phillips was the drummer on the original version, both Collins and Phillips play left-handed. Phil Collins, completely shifts the song to his strengths, creating a different sonic attack. It totally works live with this band. I admire how Phil Collins plays the song as he feels it live, versus trying to mimic Simon Phillips. Two different drummers, two different outcomes. I love both versions.
I totally disagree. Collins is rushing the beat, pushing the tempo. Does not work in this song. He was just 'the flavor of the moment' in 1982. Also I love the early 80's fashions worn by Pete and the band, lol!
@@jabold What makes this version different, is based on Collins not playing to a click track, rather he is playing live with monitors on stage. Collins swings the groove, and he adds in unique accents that are not in the original song. The tempo on this song has to be fast, and do not think the tempo is dramatically changing. It is being played in real-time, not absolute/artificial time. Collins is known to play with click tracks, especially with his solo catalog. On this live performance, he plays much more open & beats to the rhythm of his own drum style.. You can tell Townsend in the beginning, isn't sure how this will go? It works, because Collins doesn't play the song note-for-note like Simon Phillips on the original recording.
lamentablemente Phill no pudo entrar a the who luego de la muerte de Keith. ya habian arreglado con keny roger, horrible batero para los who. con Phill hubiera sido otra cosa
No kidding. This group should've done more together. There was a time in the late 70s, after Moon passed that Collins talked with Townsend and was willing to leave Genesis to become The Who's drummer. It never materialized. Oh well. At least we have this.
@@242-f5u You could tell Phil was having a blast. Yeah, that would have been awesome. Mick's basslines in this version are really cool. The high pitched keyboards are annoying. I think both Pete and Phil were gesturing about that. Cool harder rock edged version of a reggae style pop song. There can be only one Keith though. Never heard any drummer who sounds even close to Moon. He played to Daltrey, as he said, and Pete said he was almost like a keyboards player the way he drummed. His drumming in Quadrophenia is pretty incredible.
Great upload. I think this is a great song & performance from Townshend - and Mick Karn, Midge Ure & Phil Collins play the hell out this song. Thanks for the post
He did it quite a bit, actually. Here, with Clapton, the crazy Zeppelin reuniting at Live Aid, George Harrison (many don't realize this), Peter Gabriel solo projects and periodically live, Thin Lizzy, Robert Plant, Frida, on and on. This link has an extensive list: rateyourmusic.com/list/groonrikk/phil_collins___session_drummer_and_producer/2/
I also recognize the guy in the brown leather jacket as Dave Formula,; at the time he was best known for his work with Magazine and Visage. The bearded, electric, mini grand piano player isn’t cited either.
Never thought anyone would ever better John Entwistle playing bass alongside Pete Townshend but Mick Karn did it ... Pure class !!! The trilogy of songs they played this night are amazing ! Stellar performance from all !
Mike Fellows Tony Butler, who played bass on the first two albums, is just phenomenal. He never did any gigs with Pete, likely because Big Country was just starting to take off. But that would’ve worked great as well.

mrJimCharles.... it won't let me reply directly to you question. But it's Dave Formula from Magazine/Visage on synths (not Billy Currie as someone else said)
Never thought I would say this but Phil Collins in this video looks like the only one not bitten by the new wave bug in that shirt of is!! I know this was the era but still.... even Pete has the "new wave" shirt on.
Hello Jenny! I would like to reach out to you but unfortunately there are no Email addresses related to your account. I'd like to buy this recording. Just wondering if it is still available and if there is a high(er) quality audio recording of this live version...? Else I might have to try a vidcap...
Great version of a great song but why do I get the feeling that Phil and the keyboard player didn't get the memo on what they should be wearing for this song? lol
Phil was also usually the in-house drummer at these gigs, so it’s a long day of tub thumping for him. Plus, he was going through so much marriage stress in the 80’s, his weight would sometimes fluctuate. It’s probably just more comfortable.
Guess Phil didn't get the memo that everyone was supposed to wear gray outfits and look as pale as anything. How dare he show up in an Hawaiian shirt looking all healthy and everything!!! Guess he was on holiday and literally came right from the airport without having a chance to change!! lol
Mick Karn, Midge Ure, Pete Townsend, Phil Collins. Japan, Ultravox, The Who, Genesis. The great class !
Mick Karn baaaaaaby.....listen to him rock that bass.
Unique fretless bass sound from a UNIQUE yet legendary bassist~
Verdade
He did his best with a generic bland song.
He massacred it with blue notes. Abysmal
@@dominicwhite2203 He made this performance and elevated the song. He was amazing here.

Loved his unique style, so much talent sadly gone, 2 soon
One of these things is not like the other...
Mick looked like a robot vampire from outer space. I love it! Dang he was amazing.
Mick in his undisputed prime.
You've never heard JBK
love what Mick Karn did on this
The legendary fretless bass of MICK KARN RIP, also love the little wink he gives, 2 someone at side of stage, as if 2 say I got this, awesome
This was a fantastic musical performance, and one the most monumental clashes of wardrobe ever.
TheEleatic and the haircut!😳
Holy fuck some of the FINEST MUSICIANS OF ALL TIME! all on one stage playing an INCREDIBLE SONG! Pete Townshend, Midge Ure and Phil Collins
I'd like to point out to you that Mick Karn wasn't such a bad musician either....:)
Mick KARN,how can u 4 get him, Pete said the best bassist in UK
LOVE watching Mick Karn having fun!
Greatest bass player ever

I think Phil swings more. Simon’s recorded version is great. Love both.
@@Meanstoend Yes, Phil Collins provides more space in-between-the notes. Phil Collins plays to the feel, not to anyone else.

Mick Karn, brilliant as always RIP
Mick Karn, an entirely unique talent. RIP 🌹
To be honest, I never really cared for this song. But then I heard Mick Karn play bass on it, and now I love it! RIP Mick
Peter Wojnar What a bassist! Bass is a lead instrument! Awesome
Mr. Collins, always killing it on those drums.
super group. amazing bass RIP Mick

SUPER GROUP............All that talent, we are spoiled.......great video....
Who cares, Mick Karn is here!
honestly, videos like these make me think that Pete could've sung all the lead vocals in the Who
Then it wouldn't have been The Who.
Amazing lineup
March 2022 - first time hearing this version - AWESOME!
Thanks for posting!
RIP Mick Karn
Wish this line up did more they were stunning together... what a fucking band so locked in
I kept thinking this too. This would have been a tremendous band to watch live.
Townsend is the man, love this song
Ahhhh ,
Dave Formula and Gary Brooker
Great shout out for Dave Formula and Gary Brooker (RIP)
I've loved this song since 1981, my favorite version!!
@33 seconds we get the very end of a Mick Karn shuffle-slide!
Great version!
Mick Karn right in the freaking pocket🤙🤙🤙🤙 giving Phil a run for his money.
Kind of wish we could hear Phil Collins on vocals too. That would be outstanding!
Very unique and different sound for Pete at the time, and I would say a great vibe going on here. It's nice. I would like to see more.
Nice to see Karn in this one

Mick Karn is superb. As is Phil.
So cool to see these excellent icons collaborate on this excellent rendition.
Pete Townshend in a Nehru suit and Phil Collins in an Hawaiian shirt. Welcome to the 80s.
Good to see Phil rockin' out like this, he shoulda done it more often. This is one instance where an all-star lineup really came up with the goods!

So many crossovers here I've gone cross eyed
what a great jam session with a bunch of talent
THANKS JENNY FOR THE VIDEO
Mick Karn ....how to fuck it all up when its all in your lap...died without a penny to his name.
Best version of this I've heard! Thank you for sharing this ... :)
Pete is the master!
Is it only me that noticed that Dave Formula from Magazine and Gary Brooker are on keyboards!
No!
Thank you for answering my question. I asked who they were years ago
Phil loving it on the drums!
big energy why ? A GREAT WONDERFUL DRUMMER

Dave Formula from Magazine is on keyboards, right? he then was part of Visage with Midge Ure and other musicians...
Other keyboard player looks to be Rabbit Bundrick (from The Who).
In a time when they had real bands that played real musical instruments.
Phil Collins looks like he came from his surfingfun at the beach and wants to go back to it as soon as possible...😉
mrJimCharles.... it won't let me reply directly to you question. But it's Dave Formula from Magazine/Visage on synths (not Billy Currie as someone else said)
Some other guy had told me earlier it was the guy from Madness! Are you sure you're correct? I'm not at all familiar with Magazine or Visage.
Looking at pictures of the three guys, Dave Formula is the one that looks most like this guy, I think you're right.
Looks like Billy Currie...
Nope it’s the lead singer from procol harem... Whiter shade of pale
great keybords
Oh to have had Keith and John playing this with Pete.
So nice to see someone place good stuph on the internet. You just got embed did on the "Voice of Vexillology"
Pete can't say he hates he has been performing for 60 years on stage
Watching Phil reminds me how much I miss Perry Baggs rip
Drums are solid
Billy Currie from Ultravox! on keyboards :-)
So it is - I stand corrected ha ha!
Nope, Dave Formula of Magazine
Let me share.
This is so unexpected!
Mick Karn, with some other blokes
😆🥂

Voorhees High School, 1982. Lisa King
Phil collins takes it to next level
Hello Jenny B, do you have the rest of this 1982 Prince's Trust concert you can share please!
Phil COllins at his best
Is Billy Currie from Ultravox on Keyboards ?
0:09 ha, he's just like that kid who said he liked turtles in a viral video :D !
Who's the keyboard player?

The other guy on synths.
Great group, think Pete liked Gary Brooker's piano on this one.
Had this on a dodgy bootleg years ago. To see it now...
The Drummer looks like he’s there on work experience!
Who was on keys?
What was that Chairman Mao phase he went through all about?
I'd like to buy this recording. Just wondering if it is still available and if there is a high(er) quality audio recording of this live version...? Else I might have to try a vidcap...
UMC/Universal is in the process of re-reissuing all 11 of Pete's solo albums, including all three Scoop albums.
Great version of a great song but why do I get the feeling that Phil and the keyboard player didn't get the memo on what they should be wearing for this song? lol
Mick karn always followed his own lines in fashion as well lol, but Phil seemed to love those Hawaiian shirts 👔 in the early 80s.
Cos they never was cool
Phil was also usually the in-house drummer at these gigs, so it’s a long day of tub thumping for him. Plus, he was going through so much marriage stress in the 80’s, his weight would sometimes fluctuate. It’s probably just more comfortable.
1-45 phil collins ...... The speed
Is pete wearing makeup?
So no backing track
Huh. Nick cage sings now
Phil wanted to join the who after Keith died..could have worked..
Drums solid rest mushey
Petes look heavily influenced by Klaus Nomi.
Mick Karn was more than "heavily influenced" by Klaus Kinski.
Guess Phil didn't get the memo that everyone was supposed to wear gray outfits and look as pale as anything. How dare he show up in an Hawaiian shirt looking all healthy and everything!!! Guess he was on holiday and literally came right from the airport without having a chance to change!! lol
Phil used to wear them Hawaiian shirts 👔 regularly in the early 80s.
Dr evil look
sorry Pete, the new wave look for you was not a good one.
I like to think of this era as Pete’s gayest in visual style.
The music was awesome, though.
Good live version of this song....Why is there a zombie playing bass?
pete just looks wierd in this vid
Collins brings credibility to this lame duck
This would have been good if anybody had bothered to learn the chords.
WTF..Phill always dressing like the bum that ask for money at the Seven 11...here and in Live Aid also..
He has stated, he never had the looks for a rock star so there was no use in faking it.
