In 1982, I purchased "Oil on Canvas," the VHS videotape of Japan's live performance at Hammersmith Odeon. The band immediately captivated me, especially the bassist Mick Karn. His musicianship was truly unique and remains unforgettable. Rest in peace, Mick. Your memory will live on in your music.
Mick Karn, what a talented and creative musical artist he was back in the day. I first learned about Japan in 1979 when a friend loaned me an album Obscure Alteratives and i have never looked back. One listen and i was hooked on their style of music and the lyrics that accompanied the music which was and still is completely different to anything even today.
Some how I got to go to 'Bamboo parties,( Japan set up), Oxford Street London, 100 club. Last time I went,,a wasp stung my eyeball,,on my way. I had dark glasses on the whole time. ,, the band used to turn up in disguise occasionally. ,,, you can see where this was going. Fantastic times.
A true virtuoso on fretless bass with that rarest of qualities: a unique sound. Such a loss to the world of music, but a fantastic legacy of great recordings ensures he will never be forgotten.
Loved Japan. Didn’t have the success of Duran Duran but for me just as good. Tin Drum is one of my favourite albums and still play it today. Mick was an amazing bass player and had a great style about him. RIP mate ❤
Quiet Life....Only album I ever bought based simply on the look of the cover. Knew I would like them. Did. Went on to buy all there other albums and see them in concert couple of times. RIP Mick...a one off!
Very many thanks for your upload. Been fortunate to meet Mick and had some coffees with him on several occasions. Great guy, humble. Huge musician, a unique style and sound. Was devasted when he died.. I miss him.
Never heard of Mick before but I can already tell he was a good and very talented person. I wish he was still here today, would've loved to have talked to him about music. Very respectfully done! ❤🎉😊 I will definitely check out Japan's music, never heard it before but I'm very open minded!
I jumped here so fast l scared my cat. BRILLIANT work. I wish Japan was more well known, they had such a unique feel to them. David Sylvian has continued making such avant garde and beautiful work. His voice and sense of melody are just phenomenal. Ive loved finding out more about Mick, I always liked his style and the artwork he did as well. Quiet Life has been playing on my iPad all week. Im sooooo happy you’ve done this episode! Such a loss to the world when Mick passed. THANK YOU!❤️
You are more than welcome 🥰 There wasnt too much out there about him unfortunately but it sounds like he led life by his terms and was happy which is most important ❤ Thanks for your suggestion and your ongoing support Deidre 🤗💕
@@HarmonyHeartsLifestyle-ul5yv always. I really appreciated this and the attention to detail you include. You found stuff I’d never known for sure! Wonderful work🤗
Was listening to Brand x and percy jones and read about Mick talking about another green world and watched him accompany Angie bowies poems on the whistle test. Music seemed to matter more then.
I've never heard of Mick Karn before but he lived an interesting life. Seems a shame as soon as they did start to get famous they broke up, wish they could have put their differences aside 💔 Thank you for this video and all you do, I love learning about musicians, whether new or old ❤❤❤
Thank you for this. Very well put together & informative / perfectly balanced : not too much / not too little . Yes , poignant indeed . Gone waaaaay too soon , like so many . RIP MK.
so many of his solo albums are absolutely brilliant, from Titles onward. Each has its specific Karn style that is a joy to listen to. They deserve more appreciation.

Oh no! Don't tell me he's died! One of those bands I hated at the time but now realise were really good. Ironically the best place to get treatment for cancer now is in Japan. Makes you think.
although they were too sophisticated for my tastes back then you couldn’t ignore their sound & style in spite of the cult band level of attention they garnered musically in Britain during an era they ironically had championed years before their contemporaries.
Quiet Life still sounds like it was recorded yesterday. Japan's masterpiece. RIP Mick, you handsome bugger!
“Quiet Life” is my favorite “Japan” album, but my favorite song is the live version of “Methods of Dance”
Loved and still love Japan..Mick Karn is a great loss to music as a whole 🥲🥲
I grew up with his music and I am very greatfull for this.

Wonderful tribute to an artistic genius - So sad he died so young.
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it!
He was my favourite member of Japan. A master of the fretless bass.

First heard of Japan was the " tin drum " album it was definitely one of the best and different albums of that time 👍🏼😎
Saw them live in Newcastle early 80’s, great band….Karn was class.

Seen them at Lancaster Uni and Hammersmith, brilliant and a style so out of the box.
Tin Drum is an ambient-pop masterpiece: in no small measure this is due to Mick’s fluid bass.
Also, no mention of Rain Tree Crow?
Phenomenal man, incredibly talented and creative ❤️ x
