My husband and I went to a restaurant, and the waitress took our order, then stopped 2 tables away and sat down to bs for 10 minutes b4 even putting our order in! We were in a rush that day, but she decided her socializing was more important than us and our order. It was the first time I left a penny tip along with the tip of doing your job b4 sitting and socializing when your customers are hungry and under time constraints. Any place that adds a tip w/o my consent, I refuse to frequent it anymore.

If you gave him a tip today and lost all your money tomorrow, not a nickel left and said hey can you help with the bus fare home, he would call security, saying throw the bum out. By what audacity do they expect a tip. You have paid tax on the winnings up front, however, you don’t get a tax refund off set on any winnings. As a long time punter and owner, you have really given me quite a laugh. There would be a riot if someone tried that here in Australia. Aussie’s do not tip. Yes, it’s creeping into higher class Restaurants, perhaps 10% max. We do tip, cal a sling, the Groom, when the horse wins, as they Work their rear off and long hours looking after a very valuable animal and also the Jockey of course. If it loses of course, well though. Spend another pile of money getting ready for the next race somewhere.😊

Anyone at bar can easily assess how much effort a bartender is putting into servicing you and in most cases they are not paid the full minimum wage. I held this opinion and still largely do. However, I have discovered that many casinos do consider their slot attendant positions to be tipped positions. This means they are largely depending on tips and not wages as their primary income source. I personally despise casinos that do this and think attendants should be paid at least a living wage and not rely on tips. But I can't punish the attendant for decision the casino makes. So I do tip 1%-2% on handpays with my total tip being limited to a couple hundred or so, depending on service, size or number of jackpot(s), etc.
What I really don't understand is people who tip their host! To me that's like tipping your car salesman.

Having a mandatory tip defeats the reason why they say tipping is beneficial. If you are guaranteed a tip where is the incentive to provide good service. Just pay your server a fair wage and mark up your prices 15%. The only situation where I find that appropriate is when a minimum tip is automatically added for large parties.

I use to bartend for a friend of mine in his brewpub and we had Growlers which most brewery's do. (Many years back before tipping was so out of control.)
What I always thought was weird was if I poured a glass of beer for someone setting at the bar it would maybe take me 20 to 40 seconds, however if someone brought in a growler and wanted it filled.
I would empty the growler, wash, sanitize, and dry it, inspect the cap for mold, if there was any I would replace the cap, fill the growler and give it back to the customer which would be around 3 to 5 minutes give or take.
However what I found was, that almost every single person setting at the bar that I spent very little time with always tipped and the person with the growler which took quite a bit of time would never tip.
Now I am not complaining, because I was literally doing it for fun and to help out my friend.

It is totally ridiculous - I'm from the UK and have commented when you raised this subject before. Prime example in the US - I go to a bar and buy a beer, I tip. Then I buy another - I tip again. Rinse and repeat. In the UK, I'll buy a few beers and if the barkeep is friendly and efficient, I'll probably say: "have one yourself" - this doesn't mean he has to have a drink there and then, it's just a way of tipping, and it's totally 'not expected' by the employees! With the prices in Vegas being sky high, the tip, as a percentage, is even higher, so I restrict it to the cocktail waitresses, servers in restaurants and the limo driver who picks me up and any Uber drivers I use (if they're friendly and helpful). I downright refuse to tip a shop assistant when I've bought a pack of cigarettes or a can of soda. I'm glad it's not just me who thinks this. Also don't like the 'emotional blackmail' element of it. As always great stuff from you and Marc on all of your videos. Thank you.

The lady that paid me seemed a bit surprised to get a tip at all. It's a pretty small casino so handpays probably aren't that frequent there. I do tip at sit down restaurants, usually 20%. 10% used the be the standard but that looks cheap now. I tip when getting my hair cut as well but its not that much. I have never tipped at a fast food restaurant. And some do bring your food to you. But it's not a continued interaction with the staff. They don't refill your drink, you do that. They don't clean up after you, you do that. If you want something, you must leave your table and go get it. I feel that doesn't deserve a tip.

Tipping is frowned upon by most here however minimum wage is $23.23/hour (US$15.48) or $29.03/hour (US$19.35) for casual (non permanent with no sick or holiday leave) employees. Tipping doesn't have to go away completely I think, but I absolutely agree it is out of hand. I think it is mostly out of just pure greed most of the time. However, there are exceptions. Some fast food places here in Oklahoma (a notoriously poor state with lots of casinos and the worlds biggest casino... lmao) are for some reason not paid an hourly wage and they actually do need tips to make up for that and I honestly think that is really messed up they don't make an hourly wage. Not sure why that's still legal. Same thing with waiters/waitresses. They run around for hours on end fulfilling orders on their feet but don't make a wage? That's just cruel.

We tip 20% at sit down restaurants. There’s a buffet we frequent, where the server always remembers our drink orders and attends to her tables a bit more than the norm, so we tip her the usual table service tip. (We gave her an extra $20 as a Christmas present). We don’t tip fast food service, but when we order take away from our favorite restaurant we tip our server the usual 20% as she is the one who takes the order and makes sure everything is correct. She also remembers our usual order and names. When we go to Las Vegas next month, if I’m lucky enough to get a hand pay, I’ll probably tip a $20 depending on the size of my (hopefully large!) win. I don’t think I’ll be getting the kind of payouts that the high rollers get, but there’s always hope lol.
If any service we receive goes above and beyond, we tip accordingly. So, 20% as a base, more as earned.

How do you feel about tipping a dealer who hands you cards from a shuffling machine? I'm a pretty generous tipper, but usually I know the dealers end up with more money than I do. I have considered waiting until the end of a session of play, then tipping accordingly. Another thing I like to do is, instead of giving a dealer a tip, I play for the dealer for a few hands. Gambling establishments are tough for tips. I start with valet, usually $5 - $10, then bellman, $10 and because I always have to check in, another $10 when they deliver it to my room. Then there is the housekeeping, $5 a day if they don't offer daily bed making and room refresh, $10 if they do. If I win a hand pay usually 2.5% - $100 on a $4000 win. Cocktail waitresses usually only a buck or two because I'm not a drinker and only get water. Then there is the usual for restaurants, buffets less because they are almost completely self serve (5 years ago Paris had a buffet, much more expensive than advertised online, supposedly because it was a "CHAMPAGNE BRUNCH", but you had to go stand in line to get a glass of champagne, and use self-serve for coffee and soft drinks!). Then we start with the valet again if I want to go to another casino. Phew! I almost always put aside $200 just for tips. Used to be $200 was my whole gambling budget! This is a sore topic with me....
Nominal tips are fine (for example, rounding up to the nearest $5 multiple on the price, so a ticket with a $23.50 price, round up to $25 for $24.50, round up to $25 still)
Tipping in a sit-down restaurant is an exception (10%-20% is customary). A casino hand-pay is an exception (1%-2% is customary).
Tipping at the fast-food place, or the service shop for your car or any of the numerous places that constantly ask for tips just grinds my gears. They may as well get signs begging for money and stand on the street corner.
All the folks saying that this is being cheap, or that people rely on those tips to earn a living, simply are short-sighted.
How about the government ask you to voluntarily increase your house taxes by 35% every payment, or the grocery store asking you to tip the cashier 25% of your grocery bill? How about your car insurance company asking you to add an extra 20% to your monthly bill because their clerks need the money? (All this on top of the already increasing prices of 20% per year)
That is what all these businesses are doing that keep asking and expecting a tip.
My response is, get the heck out of the service industry. Just because they feel entitled to your money, does not mean you need to comply. I say for them to get a regular hourly job. (There is such a huge employee shortage in this country right now, that anyone that says they cannot find a job, simply does not want to work or they are impaired with something that prevents them from working a regular job. - Either way, it is not my responsibility to supplement their income because they do not want to hit a daily grind.)
When I eat out, I tip VERY generously, but only if the service was good. If not, the tip reflects that. In a casino, I typically tip 3% on machine hand pays (where they have to do a little work, and to encourage them to handle any additional hand pays I get quickly) but I limit this to a maximum of $100, per $5,000 won.
For table games, I will place a few bets for the dealer as I am playing, which ultimately is a tip, but I rarely tip directly on a winning hand. It took no extra effort on their part to deal the hand, nor did they have any extra amount of effort to pay it out. (beyond the base elements of their job) The exception is if it is a big win based on the wager amount. For example, a $20 bet on Mississippi Stud could return $8k on a four-of-a-kind, and I did tip the dealer $200 on that win. (2.5%)
I do not use uber, lyft, food delivery or any other of these services. I do not have pizza delivered or anything else, so in my opinion, these industries need to be trimmed WAY back, and then perhaps these companies could afford to pay the remaining drivers a living wage.
Also, I refuse to do business with any company that asks for a tip when placing an online order (for example, Little Caesars pizza) - The reason is, when they see a person did not include a tip with the order, you can get 4-1 on your money that they mess with your food.
These places are simply goofy. Would folks want Amazon to ask for a tip to fulfill your online order? How about your drugstore when they renew a prescription online for you?
It has simply gotten out of control and will continue until folks refuse to comply. - Remember, people only do what others allow them to do.
I will step off the soap box now, but like I said, this topic really makes it hard to contain contempt for it.

Businesses have seen it as a way to supplement wages and play customers in different way's to tip for nothing.
