    my favorite of the Trilogy.
and while i do like Thrawn as the villain in this, i disliked him in pretty much everything else he's in, as Zahn came to believe his own hype, and made Thrawn an unstoppable genius who always knows everything about anything. His new Disney canon books are the absolute worst at this.

Another solid review. I like the fact that you undertook reviewing the original (and as far as I'm concerned legit) Thrawn trilogy.
I only started reading (and buying) "Star Wars" books a decade or so ago. So I'm, relatively speaking, a newbie. What brought me into the fold was the Thrawn trilogy...as these were the first books I purchased and read.
Now, I agree with you that they are pretty uneven books and to some extent, even somewhat overrated. And yes, I think at least for me, there are other better SW writers than Timothy Zahn. James Luceno and Alexander Freed come to mind for example.
However, I think that the staying power these novels have is due to their relevance. When "Heir To The Empire" came out in 1991, as well as the subsequent books in the trilogy...interest in the franchise was at an all-time low. "Return Of The Jedi" had been released in theatres in 1983... and in the almost decade that followed, there had been hardly any new "Star Wars" related materials released (except those Ewok made for TV movies and some cartoons). Most people had moved on.
When Timothy Zahn published his Thrawn trilogy...that was like the literal big bang which launched the Expanded Universe. It also sparked the re-birth (and expansion in other media formats like comics, video games etc) "Star Wars" experienced as a result. These books where the catalyst for that.
So while qualitywise these three novels might not be the pinnacle of SW related literature, they are and remain vitally important.

Oh yeah, for EU authors, James Luceno and Drew Karpyshyn are top tier! I purchased my first SW book 11 years ago! Started with Death Troopers. Followed it up with this original Thrawn Trilogy. And I’ve been hooked on reading ever since!

This is where you really start to feel the disconnect between this lore and the prequel trilogy lore. If I didn't grow up with prequels, I think I'd enjoy it more. Still, very good. But i have to add, it surprises me how much more i like Thrawn's depiction in the Zahn's most recent 6 Thrawn books. With as much as this trilogy is heralded, i expected more. Still a very good trilogy but little things keep taking me out of it and distracting me
