Matchbox 1/72 A-4M Skyhawk- "Full Build" and "Final Reveal" (11.20.16)

- This is my "Full Build" and "Final Reveal Video" for the vintage 1976 Matchbox 1/72 A-4m Skyhawk.
I created this video with the RUclips Video Editor ( / editor )
RUclips Video Editor sucks because you cannot place the music tracks at any chosen start point within the video, they can only be placed at the very beginning of the video. I had a cool track that was the same length as the "Final Reveal" portion of the video, and a track which would have helped enhance the "Final Reveal". It's time to replace the expensive lap-top I accidentally dropped, so that I can return to normal video editing status!
The music track contained throughout the length of this video is provided courtesy of RUclips Video Editor and is as follows:

Basic and simple, but effective! In the era of super detailed extra-expensive kits and aftermarket add-ons , it is nice to see that the-old-style brush work could be satsfatory as well. It's the great power of this great hobby! Very nice, thanks for inspiring us!
Thanks for watching and for your your kind comment, Francesco, greatly appreciated! Cheers : )
super Martin. you'd never guess she was brush painted , nor the kit age. thoroughly cool build mate
Thanks Mark, greatly appreciated mate! I've watched a few of your videos on here, but cannot leave comments, you have them turned off...so, I just thought I'd let you know that I am watching your videos and enjoying the great work you're turning out. You and Norm Lajoie are in a league of your own when it comes to armor builds. Cheers : )
Outstanding job on a 40 yr old kit, Martin! I have a few old Matchbox kits in the stash, and now you've given me inspiration to build them. Love your work!
Thanks for watching and commenting Ken, greatly appreciated, and, I;m happy to hear this build inspired you to have a go at your Matchbox kits, have fun with them! This was my first Matchbox kit! Cheers : )
I like the kits like this. The Skyhawk waited a long time for the build and we witnessed that thanks to you Martin. Cheers!
Thanks for watching and commenting Jose, much appreciated. Although it's a lot smaller than the scale I usually built at, It was a fun little project painting it with brushes. Cheers : )
Basic model but with good paint job... Lovely. :)
Thanks again! Cheers :)
Excellent build Martin. You lucked out with the decals and they came out fantastic. Adding the history is also a good addition.
Thanks Bob, much appreciated mate, and yes, I was really surprised that I could still use the decals after 40 yrs?! Cheers 👍😃
Love seeing a marginal, older kit done so masterfully. Well done Martin. Great build and paintwork. Best wishes. Bill
Thanks for your kind comment and for watching Bill, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
Nice one! our RNZAF operated Skyhawks.. thanks from NZ 👍✈️🇳🇿
That came out a real little beauty very well done. A great looking Sky hawk.
Thanks Len, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
Fantastic job on the old Matchbox kit, well done Martin, :) Tom
Thanks Tom, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
Really well done! Especially liking that neat paint job! And the engineering of the kit looks pretty ok for a 72nd 70s kit.
Congrats on another cracking build! Can't wait till the next one,
Cheers,
Jefferson
Thanks Jefferson, greatly appreciated mate! I;m working on a 1/32 scale figure of Erich "Bubi" Hartmann to go with his 1/32 scale Bf109G-10 "Erla" that I built last year. Hope to have it done by the end of this week for a video release at the weekend. But, my wife is off work from Wednesday onward for the Thanksgiving holidays and we're having a lot of family over during the days...so...there will be a lot of distractions. Cheers for now, thanks for watching : )
Really excellent Job on an Older kit. Love the Finish.
Thanks Stephen, greatly appreciated. This was one of seven 1/72 scale builds I did, back to back, to practice my "Hairy Stick" techniques during a period where I couldn't use my airbrush. The brush painting progressively got better with the more I built. I prefer my MiG 29 Fulcrum build to this one, which I feel looks too much like a toy because of its age. Here's a link to my brush painted 1/72 scale MiG 29: ruclips.net/video/zstynfbRiZg/видео.html Cheers : )
I didnt expect you to get that good of a result ,a nice job done!
Thanks Mark, much appreciated : )
I really enjoy your videos and your work. Really inspires me to start this hobby again.
Thanks for your kind comment Shawn, greatly appreciated! You should start this hobby again...it's fun, relaxing and addictive! I started building models in 2014 after retiring and in need of something to do to fill in my many hours of free time. Hope to see something from you in the near future! Cheers : )
Love your brush painted A-4 Skyhawk! It looks like paint by an airbrush.
Thanks Daniel, much appreciated. When my airbrush was down a couple of years ago, I decided to have a go at brush painting a few 1/72 scale kits to see if I could do a reasonable job. I ended up doing 8 kits in a row, all brush painted and really had fun. This was the first of the 8 and not so good, but I got a technique down that I really liked the look of. This is a poorly detailed kit, so that doesn't help either. Here's some links to a few of the other brush painted ones, if you'd like to see them:

Very nicely done Martin and brush painted to very nice .carl
Thanks Carl, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
I was a kid and my older brother built this one back in ~77, he didn’t use paints only glue, using the grey plastic as “natural color” …, I loved the end result with the decals it looked great, at least for a kid.
Forward 5 years, watching the news (Malvinas war) to my surprise I saw the same plane being used by the Argentina air force to combat fiercely and causing some serious trouble for the British navy, not bad for an obsolete plane.
Great Video Martin.
I am a new subscriber and just wanted to say that I really like your videos and your style of modelling. Many thanks for sharing these builds with us and allowing us to see you build, paint and weather these lovely kits. Many thanks and have fun,
Joe
Hey Joe, welcome to my channel and thanks for subscribing and watching my videos, much appreciated and happy you like my style. I'll go check out your channel now! Cheers : )
was very suprised about the pleasent and authentic finish seeing as it ius such an old kid!
Thanks Declan, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
nice work on an ollllldddddd kit Martin. superb.
Thanks Ian, much appreciated mate :)
Another great build Martin.
Thanks Bill, greatly appreciated. Hope you're doing okay mate? Cheers : )
that is really an outstanding job you did there Martin, i admire your skills for painting with a brush !!! looks really like it is airbrushed on
Thanks Jean, much appreciated...I gave it my best shot with the "hairy sticks"! Cheers : )
Another great built. Keep on making more please.
Thanks again, peter, much appreciated! Did you see my first small scale jet that I built? if not, here is the link to it...enjoy!

I enjoyed this kit almost as much as you did Martin ! I would have filled the nose with bb's ! Knowing trycycle undercarriage ! But I can't go to far cause I had same problem with a black widow 1\48 build ! But I didn't get enough weight into it ! The nose had radar done into it. But I managed to get weights all around the nose peice and cockpit and under it with a large bolt sticking down thru the cockpit and a couple of nuts on it as well with a large nut in the nose landing gear bay up front ! Dam thing still tail drags ! Lol. Dam thing weights a ton too ! I didn't airbrush just black on it ! But I did use black on it with a whole lot of brown rust color mixed with black sun dried pasific look ! Anyway it's possible that it's got about two or so lbs ! Of weight into it ! Lol. Nice build for an older Skyhawk model I have never built one ! Thinking of maybe a 1\32 size !
I brush painted this Skyhawk....it was just an exercise to see if I could do okay with the hairy sticks while I couldn't use my airbrush. But like you, I;d love to build a 1/32 highly detailed version and use my airbrush on it.
There wasn't a warning in the assembly instructions about adding nose weight on this model, so, I didn't use any, and, I'd never built a model with the nose wheel before so wasn't aware that they are generally tail-sitters. This was my learning curve for future builds!
I have a P-61 Black Widow in my stash, made by Revell, so, if it;s the same model as you made, then, I'll be very weary about it now, thanks...I'll put some solid blocks of lead in it!
Cheers : )
Great work Martin as usual! super work on an old iconic Matchbox kit :)
Thanks Warren, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
International British Modeler your very welcome mate ;)
To čo sa ti z toho podarilo vytvoriť Martin, je fantázia. Nádherný A4-Skyhawk!+
Thanks Marian, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
It was actually clearly indicated that she would be a tail sitter. If you look at step 2 of the instructions, you see that big white arrow in a black square pointing towards the nose ;) On the left of the instructions, at the bottom, you will see what that arrow means ;)
Superb build. Great skills there
Thanks Sherbir, greatly appreciated! Cheers : )
Painting perfection - Turned out nice again!
Thanks Jim, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
Really impressive paint job, considering you used a brush. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Lee, much appreciated mate! Cheers : )
I enjoyed this report a lot, good build of a very interesting plane
Thanks, much appreciated! Cheers : )
Wonderful build Martin, Thank you very much for sharing!!!
.
Thanks Luis, much appreciated! Cheers : )
Martin... realy good work! Very professional skill level!
Thanks Daniele, much appreciated, mate! Cheers : )
Very nice work!
Thanks Max : )
Looks fantastic Martin!!
Thanks Kenny, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
Superb job of one of my fav aircraft well done
Thanks Mark, much appreciated...it's not bad for a hairy stick job....I much prefer to airbrush, I get better results, but I made this when my AB wasn't available. Check out some of my airbrushed models such as these: Dornier Do 217E-4 Bomber: ruclips.net/video/mnsX9L-xe0Y/видео.html Panavia Tornado IDS in Desert Storm markings: ruclips.net/video/e68A3-I1z2Y/видео.html
Cheers : )
Cracking build and finish.
She's a beauty Martin
Thanks John, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
Top Gun job Martin !
Thanks Lee, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
Super cool. I´m motivated to build This kit too!!
Thanks PK, much appreciated and happy to hear you're motivated by this video to build yours: go for it and have some fun! I normally don't brush paint my models and I usually steer away from 1/72 scale because my old eyes can't deal with the small scales. You should check out some of my larger scale builds on my channel such as this 1/32 Ju 88A-1 Bomber: ruclips.net/video/Un29hOf2diM/видео.html or this 1/48 Panavia Tornado IDS in "Desert Storm" markings: ruclips.net/video/e68A3-I1z2Y/видео.html
Make sure you share your build on RUclips so we can all get to see it!
Cheers : )
Great job ! I'm not a snob about. Rush painting .
Thank you, much appreciated! Cheers : )
Great work.
Bloody good job that Marty. You'd never guess you haven't use your airbrush mate. What's next??
Thanks Tim, greatly appreciated mate! Keeping with the brush painting only option, I started working on a 1/32 scale figure of Erich "Bubi" Hartmann to go with his 1/32 scale Bf109G-10 "Erla" that I built last year. Faron Adams sent it to me after i had completed the plane..just getting around to working on it! Cheers : )
Muy bueno, gran trabajo. Saludos
sweet build!!! damn, you can build some air planes. very nice.
Thanks Eric, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
Very nice man!!👍.
Well it looks like paint over spray of white at 7mins in to the video around the flaps and air intake, as well as a defined line up from the wing root and half way up the fuselage. I could be wrong and it is just shadows? When I have brush painted you get a definite line, so would like to know how you painted yours.
Awesome build Martin! All your birds have a distictive personality (That sounds odd...)
Thanks Felis, much appreciated! Most artists have a distinctive quality of their own that makes them recognizable from other works...if I'm achieving that with my builds, then I'm happy about that : ) As an Engineer, and before CAD software became main stream, I really loved producing my engineering designs on a drawing board...everyone could tell who's work they were looking at, we all had our own distinctive styles...it;s a little more difficult with standardized software. Hope you;re doing well mate and thanks for stopping by! Cheers : )
I hope your airbrush gets going soon ! Lol nice house ! Last time I did a paint job on an aircraft it was a 109 trop desert yellow upper light blue under with a white nose or should I say white spinner ! Lol. You do know your aircraft modivates model makers to step up and grab plastic ! I know I do ! Just wish my eyes would agree with me sometimes
Airbrush will be starting up later this week. Ha ha...you can only see a small part of the house...some of one side of the kitchen, I;m sitting at the dining table where I do all my modeling. I hope my builds motivate others to build, just as I was motivated to build when I began watching other model builders videos 3 1/2 years ago, and like you, my eyes are terrible now, I always have to wear Opti-Visors to see anything! Cheers : )
nicely done, you've almost made an terrible looking aircraft look quite good, looks like it was built from spares by a committee..
I recently built seven 1/72 scale kits and brush painted them at the dining table until I could start using my airbrush again and get back to my preferred scale of 1/32 and some 1/48. So, I dug out a bunch of old kits that were 40 to 50 yrs old and very cheaply manufactured. You should watch some of my airbrushed large scale builds, not these old 1/72 brush painted builds. Here's a link to a Eduard 1/32 Messerschmitt BF109E-3 that I built....very problematic kit, but it turned out nice in the end: ruclips.net/video/ej54LH-n8iY/видео.html and this is a link to my Airfix 1/48 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb in the colors used when based in Malta: ruclips.net/video/AKddHmJ_chs/видео.html
Orate that Mar. made a 40 yr old look nice & fresh.
Thanks Mark, greatly appreciated mate! Cheers : )
Oh yes I have seen this also.
Okay! Cheers : )
Me recuerda cuando adolescente, armaba aviones a escala marca Mathbox en la década del 70, la caja era algo diferente a este caja del modelo del video.
El modelo y versión del avión A 4 es el mismo de esa década.
How bad was the decals on that Skyhawk
Surprisingly, for how old the kit was, they still worked, but, I had to let them soak longer and then carefully peel them from the backing paper, because they wouldn't slide off. At least I didn;t have to go searching for after-market ones. Cheers : )
it looks superbe if I hadn't seen it ; I wouldn't believe it was a Matchbox kit . You don't need to spend a huge amount for a good Laptop with Windows 10 . Last year I got a 15.6 full HD with a fast AMD A10 processor from Lenovo for £380 for my daughter and Intel i7 17.3 Full Hd for £750 from HP for us . If anything US prices are lower . Sophie's computer is very capable of video editing etc ; although the HP is a step up . I guess software is the main issue ; your old Laptop running very old operating system can't be compared to a Windows 10 system .
Hey Anthony thanks for watching and glad you like how this little thing turned out, much appreciated! My Lap-Top that I accidentally dropped onto the paving when getting out of the car cost me $900.00 at Christmas 2014. A high end HP 17" screen 1TB of Storage, 64Gb of RAM, 1080P full HD web camera, high end graphics card with its own RAM, a i7 quad core processor, loaded with Microsoft office, MS Project, Movie Maker and other things. It was nice and fast...bummed me out big time when I killed it! That's the second thing I've dropped and broken in the last few months...I;m getting old and clumsy! To get anything less capable now would be like replacing my Spyder with a Skoda, after being spoiled with it :P I'm actually looking at a $3,500.00 HP Workstation with a 26" 4K screen...I'm thinking about doing some part-time Engineering consultancy work...I'm getting bored since I "retired" 3 and 1/2 years ago...my brain needs to be challenged again! Hope you;re doing well? Cheers : )
Some like that bombered a few british ships in Malvinas.
